This Week’s Meeting: At the commencement of the current Rotary year, President Grant laid out some very distinct goals for his year at the helm. He wanted his legacy to be a rebuilding of the Club’s membership base and that wish took another positive step today with the induction of Bernadette Schwerdt. Bernadette is a lady of many talents - a professional copywriter (Managing Director of The Australian School of Copywriting) holding degrees in Business and Arts, author, corporate trainer, keynote speaker, university lecturer and actress.

We were fortunate to hear Bernadette’s address as our guest speaker on 18 September, but with so many strings to her bow there is much more to tell and we look forward to getting to know Bernadette better in the coming months. 1 in 5 have no-one with whom to discuss their problems (above the Victorian average)

1 in 4 are looking for work within six months of finishing school These factors and other studies have led the MVCC to create a Youth Engagement Strategy which aims to provide inclusion, connection and opportunity for local young people. National Youth Week, held in April each year, is a major part of MVCC’s interaction with our young people and boasts one of the largest rosters of activities in the country for this event. Local activities include:

Sounds Loud Festival held in Queens Park

    Step Off! dance competition

Moonee Valley Youth Summit Other MVCC youth programs include: Choices – highlighting the importance of and inspiring good decision-making in 13-17 year olds L2P – Learner Driver Mentoring Program, a Vic Roads initiative funded by the TAC, seeking volunteer mentors to supervise the mandated 120 hours required of learner drivers (under the age of 21) who do not have familial support for the required supervision (A big pat on the back to Sam Morello and Morello Motors for assisting with the provision of fuel for the program’s vehicle – well done Sam!) Youth Advisory Forum – meeting quarterly to discuss youth concerns and strategies Music Reference Group (MRG) – 20 young volunteers from the MV area meet to plan and run drug and alcohol-free music, arts and cultural events in the community Niddrie Youth Hub – a multimedia hub and recording studio for local young artists Loop – a media project featuring in every second edition of the MV weekly In association with the Bendigo Bank, MVCC run the MV Youth Foundation grants program. Council is also associated with the Kokoda Program and support a Victoria Police scheme entitled ‘So You Know’, aimed at educating young people about the consequences of certain activities such as binge drinking. MVCC have already joined with local Rotary Clubs in several activities including support of the TAC Breathometer Project, the International Women’s Day Breakfast, ROADstart (which assists mature-aged learner drivers to gain experience and a licence) and the Flemington Eagles and North Lions Soccer Clubs, members of the Australian Somali Football Association. Planning is underway for a Future Group Partnership Forum which will increase communication and cooperation between Council and local community groups. With many common areas of interest, the Rotary Club of Essendon and the Moonee Valley City Council are natural partners, and the coming years should see our local community benefit significantly from our combined efforts.

President Grant’s thought for the day: ‘A closed mouth gathers no feet!’

Mega Draw - Horse Racing Night Addendum

Last week’s edition had Royce Abbey as the big punter who backed a 10-1 winner in the first at Maribyrnong. This was an editorial error as In fact the horse’s name was ‘Royceabbey’ and Royce laid no such bet. Apologies to Jean for giving the impression that Royce had embarked on a new career! Also, huge thanks from the organisers to Mary Tartaglia who sold 34 tickets for the event, contributing significantly to a very successful night. Well done Mary!!

You may recall last December when St. Vincent’s donated 150 electric beds to Rotary. Several Club members assisted in loading them from the hospital into a container and we also contributed financially with $3750 towards the cost of shipping them to the Bairo Pite clinic in Timor Leste.

St. Vincent’s have advised that they have another 150 beds available and D9800 has once again requested assistance. Many hands made for light(ish) work last year. The dates are yet to be confirmed but will be either 13, 14 of 15 November. These days are normal working days which will limit members’ participation, but if you may be available on any of these dates, could you please contact Simon Cookson?

    Famous Rotarians

Sidney "Charlie Chan" Toler (1874-1947) – Member of the RC of Halifax

From 1914-1917 Toler, an American, was living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, working

as an actor and playwright. He joined the Rotary Club of Halifax and was a

member in the year his club sponsored the Rotary Club of Charlottetown.

Toler left Halifax and became a Broadway star. In 1938 he took on the role for

which he is most remembered, Charlie Chan, appearing as the Chinese-

American detective in 22 films. Toler was actually the second non-Asian to

play the role of Charlie Chan, following on from Swedish actor Warner Oland

who played the character in 16 films from 1931-1937.

The origin of acronyms is a little unclear; however, they have been in use for thousands of years with early examples found in the Roman and Hebrew cultures. An early Latin example is found on Christian crucifixes: INRI – I: IESVS (Jesus) N: NAZARENVS (Nazarene) R: REX (King) I: IVDÆORVM (of the Jews).

Their widespread use in daily life is a relatively modern phenomenon and is a result of increasing rates of literacy in the 19

    th and 20

    th centuries.

The use of acronyms has been further popularised with the use of the Short Message Service (SMS) on mobile phones – easy to use but having a detrimental effect on the spelling ability of our younger generation.

Not all are in favour of acronyms with several groups being established to combat this growing trend – the American Association Against Acronym Abuse (AAAAA), the People Against Acronyms (PAA), and the Committee Resisting Acronymic Proliferation (you can work that one out).

Life really boils down to 2 questions.....

    Should I get a dog….. …..or should I have children?

    Your call!!

And a quickie or four…. I saw a poor old lady fall over today in the street. At least I presume she was poor – she only had $1.20 in her purse. My mate’s wife left him last Thursday. She said she was going out for a litre of milk and never came back. I asked him how he was coping and he said ‘Not bad, I’ve been using that powdered stuff’. The police came to my front door last night holding a picture of my wife. They said, ‘Is this your wife sir?’ Shocked, I answered, ‘Yes’. They said, ‘I’m afraid it looks like she’s been hit by a bus’. I said, ‘I know, but she has a lovely personality’. How to enjoy a bottle of wine:

    1. Open the bottle to allow it to breathe. 2. If it doesn’t look like it’s breathing, give it mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
