Did you know that the month of August is named for Augustus, Julius Caesar’s grandnephew? After he defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra to become emperor of Rome, the Roman Senate voted to name a month after him, just as they had named the month of July for his great uncle. Not only was August named after him, but the Roman Senate decided to lengthen the month from 30 days to 31 days -- since Julius' month, July, also had 31 days. “Interesting!” I know I can always use an extra day to have fun. Did you know?

Did you know that the month of August is named for Augustus, Julius Caesar’s grandnephew? After he defeated Marc Antony and Cleopatra to become emperor of Rome, the Roman Senate voted to name a month after him, just as they had named the month of July for his great uncle. Strange Music

New York City composer Patrick Grant founded International Strange Music Day, August 24. As a composer of music that combines very different styles and rhythms, he founded the holiday as a way to urge people to listen to music they have never heard before. Grant believes that diverse musical interests can lessen prejudice and instill harmony and understanding. Not merely an individual artistic expression, music is believed to have the power to bring communities together. Dr. Thomas Currie of the University of Exeter says that music is a kind of “social glue.” Speaking of music If you have never come down to the Rose Room on Thursdays at 12:30-1:30 to sing with the Choir, you are greatly missing out. Dan is a wonderful pianist, and we appreciate everything he does, along with Vern Cord assisting. I want to give him a big Thank You!

Our staff wants to recognize one of our residents Robert Visser (Pastor Bob). Over the last six years, he has donated his time, knowledge and wisdom to our residents whom attend his bible study. Pastor Bob has been a resident since 2009, he has been a Pastor for over 70 years of his life, enjoys golfing and going out to eat at Mel’s Diner. In his younger days he enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. Although he enjoys bible study, he has given his notice of retirement as of September 1, 2016, he will no longer be running our bible study here at Roseville Commons on the 1st & 3rd Mondays of the month. Thank you Pastor Bob, we appreciate all you have done for our community.

Tina

Words from Juanita

I would like to thank all of you for being patient with the recent staff changes. A special thank you to Tina for being such a big help to us while filling in while Carole is out on her leave of absence. Carole is doing well and will be coming back soon. I also want to thank Joe for doing a great job getting our residents back and forth safely from their doctor appointments and outings. Hats off to both of them! We are looking forward to our new front desk staff member who will be joining us soon. In the meantime, we have Beth from our other senior properties helping out at the front desk; so, please come by and say hi! Beth is friendly, enjoys working with seniors and we are delighted to have her aboard to help us out. Reminder, my Bingo is on Monday, August 29th; so, please join in the fun & possibly win a prize.

Attention all movie goers, if you would like to see a special movie, put the name of it in the suggestion box hanging up on the community board in the foyer. I will gladly

order it for all to enjoy!

Culinary Corner

Hello residents of Roseville Commons. It’s still pretty hot out there! To combat the heat exhaustion I thought I’d share a healthy and refreshing smoothie that some of you may enjoy. It is a Banana and Kale Smoothie that is chalk full of vitamins and nutrients. This summer treat is easy and refreshing, with only 4 ingredients! (5 if you count the ice)

Servings: 1 large or 2 small

Ingredients 1/2 cup skim milk

1 cup nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt

1 large kale leaf, torn into pieces and without thick pieces of the rib (about 1/2 cup)

1 ripe banana

Approximately 4 to 6 ice cubes (smaller ice cubes work better)

Directions 1. Add milk, then yogurt to blender.

2. Next, toss in the kale.

3. Break banana into chunks and add to mixture. I like to add a cup of strawberries as well when they are in season. Bananas and strawberries go so good together!

4. Place the ice cubes on top. NOTE: If you’ve never made a smoothie with ice in your blender, check your blender instruction book or look for your manual online on the manufacturer’s website to determine if there are specific guidelines for adding ice to your blender. Some blenders may not be strong enough to break down ice cubes.

5. Begin blending, starting out on a lower speed and then increasing speed. Puree until smooth.

6. Enjoy immediately.

Stay cool and healthy my friends!

Chef Brian
