The Role of Exercise on Hip Deformities:
Femoral Acetabular Impingement (FAI)
Olivia Venezia, YSP participant, Revere High School
Youssr Attia, YSP participant, Al Noor Academy
Amanda Anderson, Undergraduate, Northeastern University
Professor Shefelbine, Mechanical/Industrial Engineering, Northeastern University
What is FAI?
bone spurs develop on the femoral head
prevent normal motion of the hip eventually can cause osteoarthritis
of the hip
Who gets FAI? elite child athletes (> 8 hours / week) in certain sports hockey players soccer players basketball players
Wolff’s Law
Structure and shape of bones will be altered over time in response to forces placed on them.
HypothesisPerforming repetitive motions during intense training exerts a load on the femoral head and acetabulum eventually causing FAI.
Objective Measure motion pervasively Identify femoral shapes
