After a second moulding at high temperature the shell is ready to be painted and the helmet

shell is hard, the inner foam must be soft, where the outer shell is more

Over the past 45 years I've ridden literally hundreds of bikes,

hundreds of thousands of kilometres, in a number of

different countries. I've ridden road bikes, tourers, sports, off

road, enduro and adventure bikes. And my experience tells

me that all tyres are a trade-off, a compromise between grip

and durability, between performance and price. Michelin,

however, seems to have come up with a formula to get the

best of both worlds with their “Power Pure” dual compound

sports touring tyres. I recently test-rode a Yamaha R1 fitted

with these tyres. They are lightweight (about a kg lighter

than similar tyres), which reduces the unsprung weight of the

bike, and helps give exceptional stability and good road feel.

On the motorway and open roads, they feel just like normal

touring tyres, and the hard compound in the centre of the

tread gives good tyre wear and value for money. After the

open road riding, I had a scratch around Ridge Road which

runs off the Riverhead Road. Ridge Road is a sports rider's

delight, with tight twisty turns and good seal. The tyres gave

me complete confidence; at the end of the run, the softer

compound on the shoulders of the tread was hot and sticky

to the touch; they'd done the job! Then, back down the

motorway riding on the hard centre of the tread again. These

tyres seem to be an ideal compromise, with no trade-off on

grip or durability.
