What Was the Revolutionary War?

The Revolutionary War was a war between the thirteen original colonies and Great Britain.

Why Did the Revolutionary War Happen?

The Revolutionary War happened because Great Britain was not giving the colonies freedom from King George II. Plus, he was over-taxing them on EVERYTHING! Then, the Boston Massacre happened. The colonies had enough!

When Did the Revolutionary War Start?

The war started in 1775 and ended in 1783. That’s eight years of a terrible war! Can you imagine that?! WOW!

Before the war started the Colonies needed a general. You know him, you love to watch him fight, he’s GEORGE WASHINGTON!

They also needed more soldiers than they had. So blacks, Indians, and even pirates, called privateers, fought to keep the Red Coats away.

The End of the War

The treaty of Paris officially ended this war. British, Dutch, Spanish, and colonial representatives got together in Paris to sign the document that officially ended the war. The treaty was signed on the morning of September 3rd, 1783 (see next page for full picture of the treaty).

Who Fought in This War?

The brave, notorious soldiers who fought for the colonies were called Patriots. The cruel, evil British soldiers where called Red Coats because of their red uniforms (duh!). For most of the war, the Patriots wore their regular clothes as uniforms, because the Colonies didn’t have the money to pay for all those uniforms. Of course, when recruiting men for the war, there were those people who didn’t want to fight, so our good friend Benjamin Franklin hung up this sign to tell those people, “Hey! If you don’t fight the British, they’re going to kill you!” (see next page for sign)
