1RIAJ Yearbook 2006

Recovery Trend in Recorded Music ProductionIn 2005 (January to December), the total production of recordedmusic (audio and music video recordings) by the member compa-nies of the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), includingproduction by 41 RIAJ member companies on consignment fromnon-RIAJ members, amounted to 353.2 million units (102% vs.previous year) at a value of 422.2 billion yen (98% vs. previousyear). Although this marked the first increase in unit production intwo years, the overall value was slightly lower compared to the pre-vious year.

By type of recorded music, a decline in the production of audiorecordings continued to show signs of bottoming out, with overallresults registering a total of 310.0 million units (99% vs. previousyear) at a value of 367.2 billion yen (97% vs. previous year). Amongaudio recordings, domestic 5" CD albums made up the majority ofproduction, exceeding previous year results on both a unit andvalue basis.

Production of music video recordings increased both in terms ofunits and value, posting a total of 43.27 million units (124% vs. pre-vious year) and 55.0 billion yen (102% vs. previous year) in value.Among music video recordings, DVDs continued to expand, attain-ing a production value of over 50 billion yen since 2003.

Value of Digital Music Delivery Exceeds 30 Billion YenThe value of digital music delivery totaled 34.3 billion yen in 2005,largely surpassing previous year projections (15 billion yen) bymore than 200%. This reflected a major increase in the number ofdownloads achieved through strengthening content of single tunesthat uses original sound recordings for mobile phones, includingringtone and other download services.

As a result, the total value of recorded music and digital musicdelivery increased to 456.5 billion yen (102% vs. previous year).
