I would like to bring you up to speed on the current state of

real estate in Buncombe County. There has been a significant

increase in activity over the last few months.

The number of units sold in January of 2012 increased by 41%

over the prior year. The sales volume increased by 51% over

January of 2011. The number of units sold in February of 2012

increased by 20% over the prior year. The sales volume

increased by 11% over February of 2011.

The total change in real estate sales for Buncombe County

through February of 2012 is 30% both in units sold and sales

volume.

The impressive results of January and February are a continua-

tion of a strong second half of 2011 and the momentum

appears to be gaining steam, all positive signs as we head into

spring, the beginning of our traditional selling season.

When greening your home there are three zones toconsider; the inside zone, the systems zone, and theoutside zone.

Before you start doing any work it is important to makea plan for each zone. The first zone to consider is theinside zone. More than 80% of your personal time isspent indoors so healthy indoor air quality will be the

top priority. There are four actions items that will help making yourinside zone healthier.

The first is to bring in fresh air. Second test for possible pollutantsources in your home. Third is to gain a basic understanding ofindoor air pollutants. The fourth action is to keep pollutants out ofyour house.

Bringing fresh air inside your home can be as simple as opening upa few windows on opposite sides and allow for cross ventilation.This strategy will only work if you live in a warm mild climate. Mosthouses are designed for spot ventilation such as bath fans andkitchen and garage exhaust fans.

Be sure that these fans are vented to the outside. In order for this tobe an effective method you must use these fans and allow them torun for about 15 minutes.

Install a timer often saves energy and ensures use of the fans. Auto-matic mechanical systems designed to work with your heating andcooling units are available and often work better for people who areunable or unwilling to practice spot ventilation actions.

It is important to test for possible pollutant sources in your home.The best test is your own senses. If you experience physical sys-tems such as running nose, sneezing or a sore throat when you walkinto your home then there is a good chance the house has trouble-some pollutants.

These may be dust, mold, dander, fresh paint, varnish, or carpet.Keeping your home clean is one of the top practices for healthyindoor air quality. While your own body is a great resource it can'tdetect all pollutants especially odorless ones such as radon or car-bon monoxide.

There are numerous DIY kits that test for many different types ofindoor air pollutants. While these are good for quick results they arenot as accurate as results from a professional.

If you are experiencing physical illness that might be related to yourhouse then it is well worth the money to have a professional exam-ine your home and offer solutions to improve your indoor air quali-ty.
