Identifying a Main Idea/Writing a Topic Sentence

Community service takes time, but it is so important that college students should be required to do it.

In this paragraph, I will discuss global warming.

Effectively Written Topic Sentences are written as complete sentences:

Topic: Community service

Topic Sentence: Community service should be a required activity for all students at Brooklyn Tech.



Effectively Written Topic Sentences are more than announcements of what writers plan to say:

Announcement: In this paragraph, I will explain my ideas about community service.

Topic Sentence: My ideas about community service changed after I started to volunteer at a homeless shelter.



Effectively Written Topic Sentences present an idea that can be discussed in a single paragraph:

Broad Topic Sentence: Students all over the country participate in community service, making important contributions to their communities.

Effective Topic Sentence: The community service requirement at Brooklyn Tech has had three positive results.
