Dear UMW Friends,

Autumn is my favorite time of year. I think of beautiful tones of orange and yellow emanating from the changing trees to the big bright pumpkins and colorful marigolds and mums that are displayed on our front porches. The marigold, a favorite of mine, represents protection, comfort, and healing.

We all know members of our church and friends in our community that need protection, comfort, and healing. UMW invites you to our October program, “Abuse: Not in My Neighborhood?”, moderated by Rev. Paul Rasmussen with panelists Jan Langbein (Genesis Women’s Shelter), Ellen Magnis (Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center), and Paige McDan-iel (Community Partners of Dallas).

“Abuse: Not In My Neighborhood?”

YOUR UMW GIFT TO MISSION

Did you know that about 30% of UMW mission dollars goes to global and national ministries? I was recently in Chennai, India on a business trip and decided to visit a UMW ministry for mentally-challenged children and adults located there. We scheduled a visit after work one day and after a confusing search through traffic in Inida, we found the “Opportunity School.” We entered a courtyard with low

buildings around it and saw children lined up, cheering for us, and giving us paper flowers. They made us feel like rock stars. The school serves 140 mentally challenged children, includ-ing 30 who live there, and 15 mentally challenged adults who live in a cottage about an hour away. Ms. Kasthuri im-pressed me as a Mother Teresa type who has given her life to these children. We took a tour and the children sang for us. Their English is a little different and their voices were not totally together, but we were able to make out that they were enthusiastically singing: “Give Me That Old Time Religion.” Amazing! Then one little boy stood up and quoted some verses he had memorized, all in English. Everything was very orderly with the barrack style beds lined up and neatly made. We saw the gardens where they are growing vegetables to sell. While they are making do with what they have, the buildings, arranged around a courtyard with no grass looked like they are about ready to be condemned due to damaging heavy monsoon rains They are hoping to replace the dormitory building soon. My visit so impressed me and made me think that our UMW dollars are being well-spent there!

MORE BEAUTIFUL CHRISMONS!

Talented UMW members at HPUMC have again been hand-crafting beautiful Chrismons to adorn the Chrismon trees throughout HPUMC in December! Sponsorships of the Chrismons will be offered to raise funds for UMW Missions on Sunday, November 2 and Sunday, November 9. UMW members are needed to staff tables from either 8:30 to 10:30 am or 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Please contact Dana Harkey at [email protected] to sign up to help!
