Good Samaritans: How Do I Find One?

I have often wondered why people are more helpful to

strangers sometimes than to people who they are familiar

with. Often times, while shopping or whatever, I have

seen people walk up to complete strangers and ask them

for directions or the time, etc. I have even seen a stressed

mother, with five children running around in five

directions, desperately trying to round them all up to

wrangle them into their three layers of outside winter

clothing, pause, smile and answer a complete stranger’s

question politely, then turn back to her own brat pack and

yell and threaten the children with no McDonald’s on the

way home if they don’t behave. What is it that causes us

to step out of our black mood, be polite to someone who

we will never see again, and who will never have call to

repay the favor? I ventured forth the hypothesis that this

“Be Kind to Dumb Animals” phenomenon was inherently

incorporated into our own social behavior from childhood,

and was triggered by the surprise of having a stranger walk

up and speak to you. As this is not an expected

occurrence, it startles us into our good behavior.

Où sont passés les bons Samaritains?

Je me suis souvent demandé pourquoi parfois certaines

Communication Skills Bilingual - I can read, write, and speak fluent English and French. I am

often called upon to interpret and translate written documents. An example is

shown.
