The Mystery of Faith

Whether it has been subtle or more pronounced, faith has been a steady theme throughout many of our Gospel passages over the past few weeks. On the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we en-countered the anguished plea of Jairus, the synagogue official, for the Lord to heal his daughter who was very close to death. While on his way to the girl, the hopeful grasp of the woman suffering with hemorrhages of Jesus’ clothes results in her cure. The ensuing exchange between Our Lord and the healed woman informs us that it was her faith that made the healing possible. Following this en-counter, the dynamic of faith receives a double ratification from Christ who exhorts Jairus, having been just informed that his daughter has died, to have no fear and “just have faith.”

The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time brought us again into the reality of faith, albeit in a negative sense. Returning to His hometown, Jesus proceeds to teach in the synagogue. However, instead of the enthusiastic following He received whilst preaching and teaching elsewhere, the people there scoff at Him and cannot see beyond the one whom they’ve known since youth. Consequently, as Mark tells us, the Lord was “not able to perform any mighty deed there, apart from curing a few sick people... He was amazed at their lack of faith.”

The Fifteenth and Sixteenth Sundays in Ordinary Time presented to us the Apostles within the context of their mandate by the Lord to go off and preach, teach, and heal the sick. While not overtly stated, faith is the reality at work in the evangelical endeavors of the Apostolic band. Their very response to the call of Christ to leave behind their former ways of life is a response of faith; the radical call to give their lives for the sake of the Gospel would have undoubtedly required great faith.

Finally, we now arrive at our current Sunday and the commencement of a five-week installment of John’s lengthy, yet rich, “Bread of Life Discourse” and its immediate aftermath found in the sixth chapter of the Gospel. With this, we come to the very Mystery of Faith itself; The Most Holy Eucharist. Does not the awe-inspiring reality of the Lord’s gift of His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity, present in the Eucharist require faith? As we hear many of Jesus’ disciples say in response to His teaching that His Flesh and Blood are true food and drink: “This saying is hard; who can accept it?” The saying is indeed hard, and how could we accept it if not by the gift of the supernatural virtue of faith infused into us at baptism? It is only through faith that one could believe a man can — at the Lord’s command — stand at the altar, speak the words of Christ over bread and wine, and have those elements cease being bread, and cease being wine, despite their outward appearances. At the very heart of faith, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI says, is a participation in “seeing.” Through the faith passed down to us, we “see” what the Apostles see; the Apostles see what Jesus sees, and is “His act of seeing makes possible his word, which is the authentic expression of what he sees.” What Jesus sees is the Father and it is from that eternal embrace that His word proceeds; a word that brings us light, a word that brings us truth, and a word that brings us communion in the same eternal embrace.

As we enter more deeply into John 6 over the coming weeks, during these quiet Cranford summer days, I invite you to spend some time with the text in prayer; perhaps even in the Presence of the Bread of Life Himself, Who waits for you daily in the Tabernacle. Fr. Tom

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?” (John 6:9) The miracle of the Loaves and Fishes is the only miracle which is recorded six times in the Gospel. It carries two important messages. First, no matter

how little we have, we always have enough to share. Second, Christ can take our humble gifts and do great things with them if we are just willing to let Him. No gift is too small or insignificant! MEMORIAL DONATIONS

We are accepting Memorial Donations for flowers for the Altar area, the Candles, Bread & Wine used for the Liturgies, and the weekly Sanctuary Candle. These items may be donated in memory of someone or to mark a special occasion. A

donation of $10 is suggested for candles, bread & wine and sanctuary candle, and a donation of $40 is suggested for the weekly flowers. (MEMORIAL CARDS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THESE DONATIONS.) ALSO, as we face the need to replace various items for liturgical use, we are happy to arrange for memorials of deceased loved ones. Contact the Parish Office.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL ...The Council is inviting nomi-nations for new members. The Council is a group of parishion-ers who meet monthly to consult with Msgr. Shugrue about matters affecting parish life and ministries. Members are selected from nominees to serve a term of three years, which may be renewed. Members are selected to reflect the general make-up of the parish community. Parishioners, including teens, may nominate others or themselves. Nomination forms can be found at the church doors and are also available on the parish website. Just drop off / or mail the completed form to the Parish Center by August 31, 2018. FIRST FRIDAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION...will take place on Friday, August 3, 2018, following Noon Mass. There will be time for Adoration of the Blessed Sacra-ment, closing with Benediction. MEN’S BREAKFAST... Saturday, August 4 (8:30 to 10:00 a.m.). ALL MEN of all ages are invited to the Sarah Black Room, Parish Center www.stmikesmensbreakfast.webs.com ROSARY SOCIETY…A reminder that this coming Sunday, August 5, 2018, the special intention at the 10:30 Mass is for living and deceased members of the Rosary Society. Members and guests are invited to sit in the front pews on Blessed Mother’s side. A BIG “THANK YOU” ...to all who assisted in any way with the annual collection of “New Gifts for Babies with AIDS / HIV and/or Fragile Medical Conditions.” All items were delivered by 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 27. A flyer with the count of gifts donated will be in next week’s Bulletin. To quote the house manager at the time of delivery “Thank you (your church) for all these gifts; they keep us afloat for quite a while.”

DID YOU KNOW?....that the candles donated and used for the Triduum Services and Feast Day Mass in honor of St. Anne & St. Joachim are extinguished following the evening Mass and reused? These candles are relighted, one at a time, at the per-manent shrine of St. Anne located in the main lobby of the church. By doing this we are able to keep the devotion to St. Anne visibly active throughout the year following the annual feast day in her honor.

SUPPORT GROUP for Parents Grieving the Death of a Child will meet the first Wednesday of each month (7 p.m. in July and August) at the Parish Center of St. Thomas the Apostle Church 60 Byrd Ave., Bloomfield. Trained facilitators are present. More information: 973-497-4327.

IS IT TOO CASUAL FOR CHURCH? As you get dressed to go to church, ask yourself… “Is it appropriate for Mass?” Dur-ing the summer we all enjoy a more relaxed mood, but let’s not go too far when it comes to dressing for Mass. One can dress for comfort, but in our air-conditioned church that should mean something different from what would be better worn at the pool or a picnic — e.g., short shorts, tank tops, T-shirts with inappro-priate messages, low-cut or backless dresses, bare midriffs, tight-fitting clothes, etc. It is a matter of respect — for God in His own house and for His People gathered here for worship. The standard should be ‘neat, clean and modest’; and let’s remember — the children are watching!
