Question for Youth: How do you follow Jesus’ teaching to “bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you? Music spotlight: Ubi Caritas

The ancient Latin chant, Ubi Caritas, has a melody that dates to somewhere between the 5th and 9th centuries AD and a text that goes back to the early days of Christianity.

The chant is prescribed as the proper for the offertory at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, and is often used during communion processions throughout the year, and at devotional gatherings, as the text speaks of the Communion of those believe in the body and blood of Christ ever-present.

The melody is often sung unaccompanied, although some composers, like Maurice Duruflé, have used it as the basis for creating expansive choral music. Other composers, such as Ola Gjello, have set the text to an original melody, while preserving the integrity of the ancient words. Still others have paraphrased it into other languages and other original melodies.

The complete text is below.

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor. Exsultemus, et in ipso jucundemur. Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum. Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero. Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est. Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur: Ne nos mente dividamur, caveamus. Cessent iurgia maligna, cessent lites. Amen.

Where charity and love are, God is there. Christ's love has gathered us into one. Let us rejoice and be pleased in Him. Let us fear, and let us love the living God. And may we love each other with a sincere heart. Where charity and love are, God is there. As we are gathered into one body, Beware, lest we be divided in mind. Let evil impulses stop, let controversy cease, And may Christ our God be in our midst. Where charity and love are, God is there. And may we with the saints also, See Thy face in glory, O Christ our God: The joy that is immense and good, Unto the ages through infinite ages. Amen.

Rice Bowls and Little Lenten Books to be distributed next weekend

What are Rice Bowls? 40 years ago, Catholics in the United States wanted to respond to famine in Africa. The question was asked, “Could we feed the hungry through Lenten prayers, fasting, and almsgiving?” The answer was “Yes” – and it came in the form of a small cardboard box! 40 years later, Catholic Relief Service (CRS) Rice Bowl remains your way to help our brothers and sisters in need each Lent.

How do we do it? Take your Rice Bowl from one of the ushers before or after any Mass, the weekend of March 3rd. (There will be some available the following weekend as well.) Go on the CRS website, www.crsricebowl.org to learn all about Rice Bowl and how to make simple meatless meals using Rice Bowl recipes. Put your Lenten offerings in your Rice Bowl, count them at the end of Lent, make a check to St. Mary Parish for the total amount and drop it in the collection Basket. Alternatively you can make your donation using our online giving platform. < https://goo.gl/VFak28 > Next week, check the bulletin to find out how Rice Bowl donations are used throughout the world!

What are Lenten Little Black Books? If you are not already familiar with them, LBBs are wonderful Lenten companions, based on the scriptural meditations and writings of the late Bishop of Saginaw, MI, Ken Untener. The LLBs are meant to be enjoyed in 6 minute intervals each day of Lent- the left hand page has a variety of quotes, information, and timely thoughts. The right hand page is a walk through Luke’s Passion narrative, a few verses at a time, with explanations and reflections along the way. You may begin to use these terrific little books beginning on Sunday, March 10th through Easter Sunday! Enjoy!

Quo vadis… My Dear Parishioners:

Today we celebrate the Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time. The gospel this weekend offers an insight for dying to self so that we might rise to new life in Christ. Just as Saul was God’s anointed, so are we. In Baptism we too are claimed by God as his own, and become priests, prophets and kings. We are Christianized being given identity in Christ Jesus. However, all of this makes demands on us. We are to live our lives in the same self-sacrificing way as Christ; that is, love enemies strive for the more noble way. As Christians we are to be merciful as God is merciful. Further there is reward for whatever giving we undertake: For the measure with which you measure will in turn be measured out to you. Our way of living is based on what we might expect from God toward us. At the same time we know that God’s mercy far exceeds even our best efforts. Nonetheless we strive to be faith-filled generous stewards of all that we have received.

I received a nice email from our Pastor Emeritus Father Bausch who sends his greetings to all of you. Last year I had asked him to set aside Sunday, 3 March 2019 to come and celebrate Mass with us and join us at the Agape in honor of his 90th Birthday. He replied at that time that who knows what life has in store for us. His words have had prophetic meaning. He is unable to join us in celebration of this personal milestone. While he enjoys visits, I encourage you not to visit since he is highly susceptible to

germs; rather, I encourage you to pray for him, send him written or electronic greetings and maybe a special note for his birthday. He had been receiving some guests with the use of medical face masks…even with these precautions he has landed back in the hospital. Thanks for understanding. Father Bausch has a new book that is being released and we hope to have it available as soon as possible.

Many thanks to those who participated in the dance last weekend. I was told that it was a fun time. Thanks to Linda Stagliano, Edwin Sevillano and all who assisted in organizing the details. We hope to have several community building activities such as this to help connect our parishioners. Our next community building event will be the Spring Clean Up followed by the Easter Egg Hunt. Stay tuned for more details.

Registration/re-registration for our Summer Religious Education Initiatives are well underway. Those planning to participate should do so as soon as possible. Space is first come, first served. Thanks for your cooperation in this important matter.

This weekend we kick off the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal for our Diocese of Trenton. Each year this appeal assists our Most Reverend Bishop in providing for the needs in our four county Diocese of Trenton. I am grateful for your attention and generosity to this important initiative. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday. Peace. Father Jeff

Come Join Us!

The Martha Mary Guild is extending a warm invitation to all members to seriously consider joining the Board. There are many opportunities for you to participate – from Presidency to Welcoming, and several other positions. No previous experience is necessary – though past Board members are certainly welcome to “come back”! It is important to note that most positions have Co-chairs and/or committee members. No Board member has to worry about being “alone”. No position is difficult and everyone helps out. Any Board member would be happy to tell you how wonderful the “sisterhood” is and it is an opportunity to make lasting friendships. Even if you are new to the parish, you are so very welcome to consider it. Please call either of the current Presidents for more information: Rorie Coppola at 732-933-0720 or Ginny Hamlin at 732-995-6538. If you would rather reach them by email: Rorie: [email protected] or Ginny: [email protected] . Remember: This is your Board. ALL are welcome!

Healing the Wounds of Abortion

The psychological and spiritual wounds of abortion can be sharp, deep and crippling. You may feel a deep numbness and may not be able to name the pain or recognize any of the symptoms. It can also have a devastating impact on the father or grandparents of the aborted child and friends of the mother. You do not have to continue to hide in shame and fear. Rachel’s Vineyard’s Retreat is a chance to focus on this painful time in your life through a supportive non-judgmental process, in an atmosphere of confidentiality, understanding, and compassion. It is designed to help both women and men experience the mercy and compassion of God.

If you have suffered through an abortion and have isolated yourself from healing and forgiveness, you might consider attending one our retreat weekends. For more information, contact Judy Warenkiewicz at 732-536-6871. All inquiries are strictly confidential.

2019 Weekend Retreats : March 1-3, 2019 & August 23-25, 2019

We want to thank those who put together this wonderful party! All attendees had a great time with friends and were dancing non-stop. If you missed it this time be alert for the next community building events!
