Overview of Programs

League Structure

Area 705 Roller Derby currently consists of two teams and a Fresh Meat

Program.

Fresh Meat

Area 705 Roller Derby offers a comprehensive twelve week Fresh Meat

Program annually designed to develop skating skill and a basic

understanding of the game. Central to the program is training on proper

technique and fitness to ensure Skater safety. Freshies must successfully

complete Minimum Skill Requirement Testing in order to be drafted for

game play.

Teams

Smooth Operators is the League’s Travel Team

comprised of veteran skaters of intermediate to

advanced level skill.

_______________ is the newest 705 team of Skaters

who have recently passed Minimum Skills

Requirement Testing or are still gaining game

experience.

See “Rostering Policy” and “Transferring Skater Policy” for more

information.

Overview of Programs

Season

Area 705 Roller Derby offers programs and practices throughout the

entire calendar year.

January-March: One weekly two hour intensive practice with

focus on skill, fitness, and strategy to prepare for the regular

game season.

April-October: Season begins with two or more practices

weekly, one or more games monthly, and tournaments as

available.

October-December “Off Season”: once-a-week practices with

a less structured format, opportunities to scrimmage with

nearby leagues.

Fresh Meat Programs: Offered once annually. Twelve week

session with two hours of training each week.

Minimum Skills Requirement Testing: Follows Fresh Meat

Training and as required for Transferring Skaters. See

“Transferring Skaters Policy” for more information.

Skaters are encouraged to participate in other activities to increase skill

and fitness levels. Physical fitness reduces the risk of injury at practice

or during game play. Trail skates and free skates at nearby roller rinks

are organized on the Area 705 Player’s Boards. Join in as often as you

can!

Rostering Policy

A League Member, who is uninjured and who is a Member in Good

Standing with the League will have priority in terms of rostering for

games.

Skill Assessment: A score out of ten points based on a Skater’s ability to

block and/or jam, receive/give hits, confidence on the track, pack

awareness, demonstrated knowledge of the game and adherence to the

rules, penalty box etiquette, etc.

This score will not be determined by minimum skills test scores, but

rather will progress and rise in rank as a player does so at practice.

Similarly, scores may be subject to lower as a consequence of a long

absence from practice, should the skater be less able to demonstrate

skills and knowledge as the result of said absence.

Attendance: Roller Derby is a team sport and requires the development

of individual skill, team play, and strategy. These essential aspects of the

game can only be developed through attending team practice.

Attendance scores will reset in January and be calculated over the

course of the season.

A score out of ten points will be assigned to members based on practice

attendance.

Consideration will be given to Skaters who attend practices or open

scrimmages hosted by other leagues. Confirmation of attendance may

be required to earn the half point.

League Building Events: A score out of five will be assigned to Skaters

based on their participation in league building events that occur outside

of scheduled practices. Fundraising initiatives, parades, and board-

sanctioned media contact are some examples of league building events.

Alternate Player Policy (APs): The Area 705 Roller Derby Bout

Committee plans and schedules games several months before the season

begins. In a case where the League is unable to create a team from

existing Skaters in good standing, the Training Committee will invite

players from other leagues to complete the roster rather than forfeit a

game.

Skaters with questions about the Roster Policy or Points System are

encouraged to speak to the Head Coach. If questions regarding the

Roster Policy or Points System remain unresolved, Skaters are

encouraged to refer to the Conflict Resolution and complete necessary

forms.

Visiting Skater Policy: Area 705 Roller Derby welcomes visiting

skaters to open practices, however, the league is unable to conduct

Minimum Testing on skaters from other leagues. To attend an open

practice, please contact a member of the Executive Board for more

information.
