Invitation Sunday September 21st

Whom Will You Invite?

Everyone needs a little grace

in his or her life. One of the

means of grace that is com-

mon to you, but that others

are not experiencing, is the

divine grace of the sacrament

that you share with gathered

Christians as you worship.

Add to this the benefits you

gain from the mutual support

through fellowship, the learn-

ing, the prayers, and the

opportunities for serving the community. It drives home the

point that people you know might really thrive here at Grace

Episcopal Church, and deepen their relationship to God.

Maybe it sounds like a crazy concept, but you could actually

invite a person to church for worship. God is very active in

the world out there. God is guiding, wooing and moving.

Inviting is about faithfulness, not success. The mission for

Invitation Sunday is to invite someone to church prior to the

day. If the mission were to bring a friend to church, the day

would be called that. If the mission were to guarantee a

person came, it would be called something else. This is an

endeavor simply for inviting someone to come. We have

part of the task, and God has the other. Our part is the

inviting of someone. God’s part is to bring that person.

What commonly stops a person from inviting? It is fear.

Christianity has always been a battle between faith and fear.

We need to put our faith where our fear is. It is God who

gives the growth. God will do the hard part. If you don’t at

this moment know whom you will ask, then ask God about

that. God is likely prompting someone you know about this.

A Few Moments with Father David…

Parish Fitness

I could never have imagined when the year began, just what all I would be up

to with my physical fitness activities. By November of last year, I had signed

up for the February 2, 2014 New Orleans Half-Marathon, so I knew my train-

ing would involve some running. Then between Christmas and New Years I

signed on also for the March 1, 2014 Woodlands Marathon, and dedicated my

efforts to my Father, Herman Price, Jr. and my father-in-law, Harry Randall,

III. My varied training—most of it before eight o’clock in the morning—also

included, walking, swimming, resistance training, yoga and cycling.

As I write this, I am just days away from my very first ever Triathlon on Labor

Day, September 1st. It is called the Towne Lake Triathlon in

Cypress, TX. It is the style event that is sometimes called Olympic or 5150

Triathlon. 5150 because the 1.5 kilometer swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run

add up to 51.5 kilometers. In miles that would be .93 swimming, 24.8 cycling

and 6.2 running. I’ll start at 7:00am, and if I am lucky, real lucky, I will be

done by 10:30am. I am very excited at the thought of finishing.

Mentors here in the parish have helped me draw parallels between these health

disciplines, and those of parish work. Drawing those lines proves to be an

important exercise, if you will. I have gradually decelerated my physical

routine, and I continue to accelerate the habits and practices for healthy parish

life and leadership. I am dedicating my triathlon event to Grace Church, the

people, the structure, and the ministry programs. The swim will symbolize the

people of Grace, the baptized community of faith. The waters of baptism

launch us into the grace of salvation in Christ, and lifetime of holy works. We

are grateful for the wonder of Christ’s saving presence, and the privilege of

serving him.

The bike ride will symbolize our structure of organization. I think of the work

of the vestry and the parish councils, the care of our building and grounds, the

encouragement of strong stewardship, and the countless ways our staff, leaders

and volunteers make things work.

The run will symbolize our parish ministries: the actual programs of service,

outreach, teaching, fellowship, communication, worship and pastoral care. I

hope to have a good report for you about my Labor Day madness with

the Towne Lake Triathlon, but I am absolutely confident that we will be

experiencing great work together for the finishing months of 2014.

My races for the last quarter of the year are the events known as the Texas

Bridge Series. There will be two 10Ks and a half-marathon, their courses

include the Kemah Bridge, the Galveston Causeway and the Fred

Hartman Bridge. And this will cap off what has been a most enjoyable year of

ministry vitality focus and physical fitness focus. Christ who’s cross is our

Bridge to Eternal Life is

our source, guide and

goal, in all of our endeav-

ors. Faithfully,

Stewardship Message

In the final months of Sept. through

November, our year-round stewardship

emphasis turns toward the important

matter pledges for the coming year. The

Vestry has been studying the principles

of stewardship and tithing from the

perspective of Holy Scripture and tradi-

tional Church teaching. They are creating

a Stewardship Statement and considering

their own pledges for 2015. The Rector

and Vestry are resolved to submit their

pledges first in the coming campaign,

and will do so by the end of September.

This early pledging will launch Grace

Church’s full parish-wide 2015 Steward-

ship Campaign in the month of October.

Christians find that growth in one’s

relationship to God and growth in one’s

connection to the church family is a

tremendous blessing. A main part of that

relationship stems from regular giving to

God through the life of the Church.

Examining passages from the Old and

New Testaments reveals that tithing is

properly the standard for Christian

Stewardship. We have seen that this

consistently has been the teaching of the

Church. Page 4
