covered pavilion, if available. We should return in the early
afternoon. Families of all sizes are encouraged. Children
and youth will need to be accompanied by a parent or
designated chaperone (with a parent permission slip).

session being July 27, the course will explore: The Faith, the
Sources of the Faith, The Order of the Faith, The Character
of the Faith, following the outline of Samuel Wells’ book

A Few Moments with Father David…
Prayer and Our Life in God
The Expansive Nature of Prayer – With all that I have read, heard and
experienced about prayer and the spiritual life throughout my life, I have come to
see prayer as a very broad category. I see prayer as more than the words we speak
to God, more even than the silent listening we do when centering ourselves in the
presence of God. We can view our whole relation to God. One of our great
collects of Morning Prayer, the Collect for Guidance, addresses God as our Heav-
enly Father in whom “we live and move and have our being”. That whole state of
existence in relation to God is a state of prayer. All that we think and feel is
prayer, all of our activity and rest is our prayer. The life we receive from the Giver
of Life, and what we make of life as a response is an uninterrupted conversation
with the Source of Being Itself.
The Intentional Practice of Prayer – The spiritual life that you cultivate will
clearly include things you do to sharpen your awareness of God, and deepen your
love for God. You probably engage in efforts of outreach in service to your
neighbor; this certainly is a form of prayer in action. When you do a kindness to
another, you can see it as done to God. To clothe, to feed, refresh, to shelter
someone in need is an encounter that changes you, because it is an encounter with
the Holy One. To pray in a group as a body is what we call corporate worship, this
is certainly prayer that celebrates the presence of God in the gathered community.
The Rites and Ceremonies of the church, such as Holy Communion or Morning
and Evening Prayer, are ways of using set patterns of language and other symbols
to acknowledge the worthiness of God. To pray on your own privately, is what we
call personal or devotional prayer. These prayers could be set forms,
extemporaneous, still and quiet meditation, or any number of other practices. The
idea behind them is connection to God. In the months ahead I will bring
opportunities for Grace Church people to learn more about Christian meditation.
The Daily Office – Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer make up a deeply rooted
rhythm of Liturgical Christians, such as Episcopalians. The morning and evening
offices, as we sometimes call them, which are in the Book of Common Prayer, are
consolidated forms from the monastic tradition of the early church. Not every
Christian can live the regulated disciplines of a Benedictine monk, thought 16th
Century Archbishop, Thomas Cranmer, the author of the first versions of the Book
of Common Prayer. He thought perhaps people out in secular existence could
indeed maintain the habit of morning and evening prayer. These core of Daily
Office is the praying of Psalms. Added to the reading of psalms are other
components, scripture lessons, canticles, collects and free intercession and
thanksgiving. We have a schedule for the public praying of the offices: Morning
Prayer daily at 8:30 A.M. (Exception Sunday: 7:00 A.M.) and Evening Prayer at
6:00 P.M. daily. Recently several parishioners have stepped forward to officiate on
weekday mornings. If you would like to help please let me know.
You are a living prayer; everything about your existence is a response to the gen-
erosity of our Creator whose grace is evident not only in making us who we are
and giving us all that we have, but in allowing us to be in the first place. Develop
the practice of prayer that you desire to offer the Almighty as a way of life, and at
the same time know, that your life itself is a perpetual prayer and offering to God.

Message
The Almighty gave all to humanity as
Creator and Redeemer and in response
to that freely-given love we respond in
thanksgiving. Surely, in this month in
which we celebrate the Anniversary of
our Nation, our response for God’s
blessings upon this fair land must be
just that. Appreciation of our Freedom
of Religion in these United States and
our ability to continue God’s work are
worthy of our praise and thanksgiving.
Someone once said, “The Christian is a
conduit through which the benefits of
God are poured.” This is a concept of
service which is all about giving, which
is, of course entirely central to loving
and living. The giving of our efforts, our
time, our skills and our financial gifts is
the basic expression of the Christian life
and of our faith.

has begun
to oversee
the work on
the new building to prepare it for
parish use. It will house the
administrative offices, rehearsal
space for the choir, and multi-

classes. The bidding process for
Phase 1 has been completed,
approved, and the renovation should
be completed by mid July. Vestry
approval for Phase 2 will be sought
during their July meeting. Plans to
re-purpose spaces in the current
parish offices are also part of this
project. Targeted completion date
for all projects is mid August.

It’s time to paint your own
masterpiece. Heather Roy is again

Youth and Family Minister
The rector, parish leaders, continue
to work with parishioners that lead
youth and children’s ministry and are
completing the job description for a
Family Minister for Youth and Chil-
dren’s Ministries. The assessment
process from the Diocesan Spiritual
Formation Division recommended
cultivating a position for someone
who would oversee both spiritual
formation programs for children, and
for junior and senior high youth, and
their families. When the position is
defined, the search process will
begin.
