A SPOTLIGHT ON KYLE MONTGOMERY
Kyle Montgomery received Circle Theatre’s
2014 Live Theatre League Individual
Theatre Award for all the work he’s done
since he started here in 2011. He does a little
of everything: ticket sales, grants, donations,
marketing, publicity, he has a hand in it all. And
when he’s not busy here, he’s busy somewhere
else. A BFA Musical Theatre student at TCU, his
breaks come “When I eat lunch and supper. I like
to eat and I do that well.”
Part of this constant activity is his schedule as a performer. He has been
cast in many area musicals, will be doing Trinity Shakespeare this summer,
and even sang back-up at a Josh Groban concert. He loves performing,
from the character research to the final polishing, and wants to continue
doing that after graduation. “Moving to Seattle, find a job, hopefully in
arts administration, perform as much as I can, and see where that takes
me,” may seem like a vague plan, but it’s one he’s excited about.
A life in theatre is something people only do if they love it. According to
Kyle, “Theatre is an art form, but it’s much more than that, in the sense
that it’s supposed to acknowledge and make you aware of things that you
may not be aware of on a daily basis.” He sees it, not just as entertainment,
but an opportunity to inform and challenge the audience to think about
things in a different light.

Juliana Smithton, the central character of The Other Place, seems uniquely qualified to narrate her story. She is funny, intelligent and has no patience for nonsense. She even has the
right credentials to navigate her own illness; as a scientist marketing a drug derived from her own research, she communicates with doctors for a living, and her husband Ian is the best oncologist she knows.
However, few of us are ever prepared to face our own mortality, and playwright Sharr White provides us with an intimate portrayal of a strong woman whose world is beginning to crumble around her. Her gradual loss of control is at times both amusing and heartbreaking for a personality as formidable as Juliana. As she confronts her husband’s infidelity, questions her doctor’s proficiency, and reaches out to her estranged daughter and son-in-law, Juliana’s humor and fortitude are stretched to the point of breaking.
But there is also a mystery at the heart of The Other Place, buried in Juliana’s past and shadowing her present -- a mystery that may release her, even as it threatens to change her world irrevocably.
- Steven Pounders

SHARR WHITE (Playwright) is the author of several plays developed and produced at theatres across the country, including Annapurna, presently running Off-Broadway. Some of his award-winning scripts include The Escape Velocity of Savages, Six Years, and Sunlight. His play The Snow Geese, starring Mary Louise Parker, premiered on Broadway in 2013. Mr. White’s The Other Place opened Off-Broadway at
the MCC Theatre in 2011 and moved to the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in December 2012. The Broadway production earned a Tony Award Nomination for Best Actress (Laurie Metcalf). He is currently working on a commission for Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
STEVEN POUNDERS (Director) is returning to Circle after directing last season’s award-winning play, A Bright New Boise. Steven is a professor in the Department of Theatre Arts at Baylor University. In addition to teaching and directing for the Baylor Theatre, he is a professional actor and director and has worked with Off-Broadway theatres including Cherry Lane, Theatre Row, and the Ensemble Studio; and regional
theatres including PlayMakers, Repertory, Trinity Shakespeare Festival, Casa Mañana, WaterTower Theatre, Theatre Three, and, of course, Circle Theatre. Steven is a company member of the NY production group, the Resonance Ensemble. He appeared at Circle Theatre as an actor in Mistakes Were Made
and Bach at Leipzig.
