NOVEMBER 3, 2013 THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NEW HYMNAL SUPPLEMENT As most of you have noticed, there is a new Hymnal Supplement in the pews. This resource will serve as a temporary worship aid as we transition to a new hymnal sometime in the future. I encourage everyone to full-heartedly sing our new Eucharistic acclamations and service music. Do not be discouraged by new music— embrace it and sing out. I promise that you will have a more fulfilling worship experience if you do so. Singing is fun, and good for your spiritual, mental, and physical health! If you are still too hesitant to sing, then hum along and read the words. Do whatever you can to “Make a joyful noise to the Lord” (Psalm 100). — Russ CANNED FOOD DRIVE We will hold our annual Canned Food Drive for Manna Foods next weekend, November 9/10. Bags will be passed out this weekend. Any 8th – 12th graders in need of service hours can help sort food on Sunday, November 10, from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. Contact Sally Daniel at [email protected] if your child is interested. SINGERS NEEDED It is not too late to join one of our parish choirs. We are especially in need of altos in both the Parish Choir and the Contemporary Ensemble. If you have thought about joining, now is your chance! For more information, contact Russ Weismann at [email protected]. Together we will “Sing to the Lord a new song.” PARISH LIBRARY Blessed Pope John XXIII and Blessed Pope John Paul II will be canonized at Saint Peter’s Square on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Our parish library has books relating to both popes. These books offer a great opportunity to better understand the holiness of these two modern-day popes. Some of the books can be taken out of the library, but others are rather large and are best read in the library,

MANY THANKS I want to thank all those who helped with the 40th anniversary celebration of my ordination on May 12, 1973. It was wonderful to celebrate with so many of you, especially with the priests and staff of the parish. A special thanks to the Sodality in coordinating and providing the food and drink. May the Lord continue to bless all of us here in this parish. — Fr. John PRO-LIFE CHRISTMAS CARD SALES The Pro-Life Committee will be selling religious Christmas cards after all Masses this weekend, November 2/3. Proceeds will benefit Right to Life of Montgomery County. PARISH WEBSITE The Pastoral Council Communications Committee is pleased to announce the launch of a completely redesigned parish website. This site was targeted from the beginning with the casual user in mind. There's no need to be a web expert in order to use the site. You'll find it neatly arranged, easy to navigate, and full of photos and content of all types that parishioners of all ages can benefit from and enjoy. This website is and will continue to be a hub of communications of all kinds, an extension of the Sunday bulletin and a real focal point for activities and events happening around the parish. If you have a parish event or activity you need to promote, this is where you'll go to do it. The Sunday bulletin from now on will be directing you to the website to learn more about a particular function so you are encouraged to check the website daily to make sure you have the latest information. There is no shortage of features that can be added to this platform so you can expect enhancements and improvements along the way. We hope you enjoy this new online parish experience and welcome any feedback you may have. Visit the site at its original location at www.stjanedechantal.org.

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR The St. Jane de Chantal Christmas Bazaar will be held Saturday, November 9, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, in Christopher Hall. Get in the spirit and start your holiday shopping while visiting over forty vendors. They will offer unique products including jewelry, accessories, hand-knits, personalized gifts, stationery, children’s gifts, and more. The Christmas tree raffle is always popular and, once again, the school faculty is decorating and donating a tree. Enjoy shopping, the bake sale, raffles, and easy parking. COATS OF MANY COLORS DRIVE St. Jane de Chantal School is participating in an archdiocesan-wide coat drive for men, women, and children who are in need. Catholic Charities is sponsoring it and their goal is to help thousands of our neighbors to stay warm during this cold winter season. Coats that are clean and in good condition will be collected in Caulfield Hall from November 11 to 15. The coats will be delivered to St. Jerome’s on November 16. SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE Registered parishioners with Pre-K age (4 years old by September 1, 2014 ) and Kindergarten age (5 years old by September 1, 2014) children are invited to register early for the 2014-2015 school year. There will be two Open Houses: November 11 and January 27; both from 9:00 to 11:30 am. Both grades fill up quickly. We want to reach out to our own parish before opening the registration to the public. Send an email to [email protected] if you are interested in holding a spot until November 11.

Visit the Archdiocese of Washington web page at www.adw.org for more information on education, family

youth, social concerns and other events in the archdiocese. “Like” us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/adw.org and find out what Catholics all across the archdiocese

IN OUR FAITH FORMATION PROGRAMS

REMEMBER IN PRAYER

THANK YOU

Thanks to the generosity of several parishioners, the fundraising efforts for our glorious new pipe organ are completed. The new Clarinet pipes will be made in Holland and shipped to St. Jane’s sometime in early 2014. I look forward to incorporating the unique sound of this rank of pipes into our musical worship. I am quite humbled by the outpouring of support from our benefactors and by the interest that all parishioners have demonstrated in the new pipe organ. This instrument will be a special attribute in our church that will accompany us in our worship and inspire our hearts and minds in prayer to God. Soli Deo Gloria! — Russ

PIPE ORGAN FUN FACT #5

Pipe organs and electronic organs make sounds in different ways. Electronic organs use loudspeakers to produce sound waves that imitate those made by windblown pipes. Pipe organs are designed and built specifically for the room where they will sound; for this reason, there are no two pipe organs alike in the world. Synthetic sound can be very loud, and our ears capture the noise they produce as thin, piercing sound waves, which are at times difficult to listen to because once you add too many “layers” of sound waves, the noise becomes distorted and unpleasant. A pipe organ utilizes a completely organic method of using pressurized air blown into a pipe to produce one pitch (this is why pipe organs take up much more space than electronic organs). The more “layers” or “pitches” added will envelope the listener in sound (almost like giving you a big sonorous hug) and you will be able to feel the effect of the pipe organ with your entire body, not just your ears. Pipe organs are unique instruments, and their presence can go from the soft sound of a distant flute, to the full force of the French “Vox Dei” (Voice of God) philosophy, creating a thunderous roar to capture your attention and stir up the Holy Spirit!

every good purpose and every effort of faith.” (See 2 Thessalonians 1:11)

SECOND COLLECTION: ARCHDIOCESAN PRIESTS’ RETIREMENT The second collection this weekend, November 2/3, is for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese of Washington. Priests do contribute to their own retirement through 403B and Social Security, but keep in mind that their salaries are modest. Our archdiocesan priests have been there for you and your families; please be there for them to assist in the dignity of their retirement and to honor their lives of services. Special envelopes will be available next weekend which will allow you to make a credit card donation. (Please note: if you make a donation by credit card using the in-pew envelope, your donation will be processed and acknowledged by the Archdiocese of Washington, and will not appear on your St. Jane de Chantal year-end contribution statement.) You may also visit the archdiocesan website at www.adw.org to donate online.
