CYO AWARDS PRESENTATION On Monday night, June 3, the St. Jane de Chantal CYO presented several awards to the 8th grade students and CYO coaches. The evening started with a wonderful barbeque dinner at the Knights of Columbus, Rock Creek Council, on Cedar Lane. The Student-Athlete Awards went to Cristin George and Chris DeMartino. The Terry Hourigan Good Sportsmanship Award went to Laney Shook, Landry Werth, and Nico Brugnerotto. The Pastor’s Award went to Julia Kane and Timothy Bergin. Also recognized were Tony and Sharon George for over 25 years of service to the CYO. They received the Paul Bollwerk Service Award. In addition, Paul Connolly was chosen Coach of the Year for his team’s successful soccer season. GRADUATION The 53rd graduated class of St. Jane de Chantal attended Mass with faculty, family, and friends before the distribution of diplomas and awards. In his sermon, Fr. Giese reflected on the students’ passage from childhood to adolescence while still listening to and honoring their parents. He reminded them that friendships in elementary school are often a matter of proximity—neighbors, classmates, family friends—but going forward they will choose their friends and he cautioned them to choose wisely and to continue to grow in their faith. Presidential and academic awards were presented to students with outstanding achievement as well as to those with exceptional dedication to their studies. Altar servers and choristers were acknowledged, and then Mrs.

FROM HENRY BAUER Thank you to all of you who expressed your appreciation to me as I am leaving St. Jane de Chantal Church. I have enjoyed my seventeen years serving you as the Director of Liturgy and Music. Thank you to all who have helped in various ministries and capacities to make St. Jane’s such a vibrant and active parish. I will miss you. May God bless you. Sincerely, Henry Bauer. FR. PAUL NGUYEN Cardinal Wuerl has announced the transfer of Fr. Paul Nguyen from St. Jane de Chantal Parish to Parochial Vicar at St. John Neumann Parish, Gaithersburg, effective July 10. Hamilton presented the Principal’s Award to Maggie Matejik and Matthew Dimond, who are models of St. Jane de Chantal’s mission. Student Council President Tess Daniels announced the class gift and Emma Kaden delivered the Farewell Address. Then the choir sang as the Class of 2013 processed out and became St. Jane alumni. STATE WINNER One special award was also presented at graduation. Each year the eighth grade students participate in the American Scholastic Achievement competition. This is a national event in which students respond to one hundred questions relating to math, science, geography, history, literature, pop culture, sports, and current events. One of our eighth graders earned the highest score among all participants in the state of Maryland: Katerina Rinaldi. We are so proud of Katie and how well she represented our school. SCHOOL CHOIR TO SING AT INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL The St. Jane de Chantal School Choir, directed by Olga Morales, will sing at the 38th International Congress of Pueri Cantores in Washington, DC, from July 3-7. This is the first time in the 69-year history of the youth choir organization that the international congress will be held in the United States. There will be more than 1,000 participants from 32 member choirs, representing 13 American states and seven foreign countries. The celebration in Washington, DC, will be a choral extravaganza. The choirs will sing at several venues in the nation’s capital, including: the Opening Ceremony with a procession of flags (July 3 at 3:00 pm); Mass of the Nations at St. Matthew’s Cathedral (July 4 at 9:30 am); Independence Day Parade (July 4 at 11:45 am); Prayer for Peace at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial (July 5 at 12:00 noon); Gala Concert at St. Patrick’s Church, where our own choir was selected to sing with seven other choirs from around the world (July 5 at 7:30 pm); and the Closing Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine, celebrated by Cardinal Donald Wuerl (July 6 at 5:15 pm). Everybody is

welcome to attend to these events and support our Children’s Choir.

FAITH QUEST PILGRIMAGE Where is the oldest church in the archdiocese? Where can you find a relic of the true cross? Who is Saint John Neumann? Find the answers to these and more facts about the history of the archdiocese by taking the Faith Quest Pilgrimage. Visit more than 20 sites around the archdiocese that tell the story of our faith. Register, receive a passport, and at each visit complete the activity and stamp your passport. If you visit more than eight sites, you will be invited to a celebration at the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land on July 20. Pilgrims can visit the sites at any time they are open. There are two remaining archdiocesan pilgrimage days—June 29 and July 14—and many sites will have special tours and activities. For more information visit www.adw.org/faithquest or call the archdiocesan Office of Event Planning at 301-853-5337. THE ARCHDIOCESAN SYNOD WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU

What is a synod? A synod is a way for all the faithful in the Archdiocese of Washington

to participate in the work of our local Church. We will review together where we are

and where we need to go to become the best Church the Church calls us to be.

Synod committees would like to hear your thoughts on service,

worship, education, community, administration, and stewardship.

At the donut social in February, we gave parishioners the opportunity to provide input on each of these areas. If you missed that opportunity, you can still participate online.

You are invited to contribute comments to evaluate what is going well and what can be improved.

Your input will help better prepare us to move forward into the future.

Visit www.adw.org/synod to learn more, gain access to several short videos

designed just for this process and to provide your input!

The online forum will remain open until June 20.

Like Nathan in today’s first reading, we sin when we begin to feel entitled and act as if what we have is ours by right, when we forget that everything we have

is an unmerited gift from God. But God is gracious and forgiving — even when we use His gifts wrongly or squander them thoughtlessly —

if, like Nathan, we confess our guilt and ask His pardon.

POOR BOX Thank you for your contributions of $3,140.00 to St. Martin’s Cloak through the Poor Box and from proceeds from the Concert Series. The Poor Box next weekend, June 22/23, will benefit Rosaria Communities, an agency of the Archdiocese of Washington which provides affordable housing for persons with intellectual and physical disabilities, and works in partnership with parishes in the archdiocese, service providers, and other public and private entities to provide high quality, faith-based community oriented homes.
