Larry Cox acquired his first orchid, a cattleya, over 40 years ago. His second orchid was a paphio-pedilum. He has grown cattleyas, dendrobiums, phalaenopsis, oncidiums, vandas, and less pop-ular genera; but paphs eventually became his favorite orchids and the heart of his collection. In 1989 he moved to the Redlands area of south Miami-Dade County where he built his dream or-chid house of 3000 square feet and continued to increase his collection with emphasis on multi-floral paphs. In the early 90s Larry saw a lycaste in a show; thus began a fascination with another orchid genus. He quickly learned that most lycastes are cloud forest plants and require interme-diate to cool growing conditions, but that didnt stop him from wanting to try some anyway. By reading up on lycastes, he discovered that there are warmer growing species, though they have never been very popular with growers in comparison to their flashier cool cousins. It also be-came readily apparent that lycastes are almost unknown in South Florida, so Larry set out to find plants to experiment with. In 2005 Larry retired from an education career of thirty-seven years, the last fifteen teaching Advanced Placement English. To all BROS members who volunteered at our annual Valen-

tines Weekend Show, I want to thank you so very much for

your time, your food to sustain us and your support. You

should feel tired but proud to be part of our society. People

commented on how friendly we were and never before knew

about us. I think they do now.

Displays were beautiful and many AOS awards were given.

Lots of Blue Ribbons and the Childrens Art work from our

two After School Programs looked great above the Member

Plant Table. Blue Ribbons were everywhere!

Raffle Table.Every one of you.Awesome, to say the

least. I know its tough being the center of attention and

asking for $$ but somebody has to do it!! You did GREAT!

I can tell you that this was the most attended show we have

ever had!!! Our orchid vendors were virtually sold out and

lobby vendors were very happy. I think we had 18 new mem-

bers join at the show. The crowd Saturday was unreal. Peo-

ple were pouring in the door. You could hardly move around

and bags of orchids were flying out the door; the same peo-

    ple came back for more!

Our show is only possible with member support.

Thank you all! BROS is the BEST!!!!!

VOLUNTEERS 2015 Thank you to the following members who provided food, managed the kitch-

en, helped set-up, break-down, did security, raffle table sales, assisted ven-

dors, arranged for and put out signs, clerked for the judges, registered

plants, arranged for judging and awards, sent invitations to the vendors, kept

track of volunteers, sold tickets, lectured and were willing to do anything

that was asked of them to make our show a great success. If we missed your

    Get Well Soon!

    2nd Chance Chids

Starting this month 20 lucky Chids will be looking for a Foster Home until they bloom again.

Whole Foods in Boca Raton has started a Partnering Program with BROS. Each month 20

Phalaenopsis that have lost their beautiful flowers will be at our Monthly Meetings available to our

members to take home and Foster.

Once they start to bloom again, they will return to BROS and then be taken to local patients in vari-

ous hospitals, rehabs, etc. These details will be worked out at a later date since we are just getting

    this program off the ground.

Come to our monthly meetings for more information and join the 2nd Chance Chids Foster Pro-

    gram.

We will be sharing two of our societys goalsTo share our enjoyment of this wonderful hobby

and To promote education on all aspects of orchid culture. This is a perfect chance to learn how

to grow and rebloom a Phalaenopsis and find out what color flower it has. You will have been

    wondering about that for months.

As part of the sharing mentioned above I am looking for a few members who rebloom their Phals

each year to take some phone calls and offer guidance to members wanting to learn. Each of us

have different ways and areas that we successfully grow Phals. Share your Orchid Secrets with

    others.its more FUN!!!!!

    Help Needed Please!

Hospitality is in need of one or two mem-

bers to help at the monthly meetings to set

    up refreshments.

Cookies, cake, fruit, and other goodies are

needed for all to enjoy at our monthly

    Member Meeting.

Thanks to Carolyn Huckshorn for providing

    refreshments at the February meeting.
