Meeting Minutes April 28, 2014

Attendees: Mary Bateman, Sandy Bergeron, Chris Calcinari, Karen Gatchell,

Ron Geer, Carroll Goodwin, Pollie Goodwin, Steve Hersey, Eileen Kelly, Charlotte Micheliche, Karen Norteman, Gloria Pasquini, Mary Smith, Sarah Todd, The meeting was called to order by President Steve Hersey at 7:40 PM. Minutes of the Last Meeting: Accepted. Chris moved, Eileen seconded. President’s Report: Steve mentioned the passing of Susan Parsons. Susan spent many years in dog world, and mentored many of us. She died Friday, April 25 from a long illness. Everything is private; there will be no services. Send cards to her mother: Mrs. Natalie Parsons 692 Winona Road Center Harbor, NH 03226 Donations can be made in her memory to the Skye Terrier Club of America; send monies to Steve (STCA club treasurer). Corresponding Secretary’s Report: None. Susan will notify AKC of our changes when we get a new President. Treasurer’s Report: None. Carroll will begin the process of changing over the accounts and all. He needs to meet with Sandy Walton. Committee Reports

Cluster Committee: Chris reports that holding a 4-6 Month Puppy competition at a show is considered an event equivalent to holding a match show. This means we don’t have to have a fall match, but we can decide on that later. New AKC rule for after 10/9/14: A club can’t host a special attraction (Best Puppy, Best Vet) without also having Owner-Handler Series events. (We’re off the hook for this year, but not next year.) We might have to rethink the Special Attractions. How the AOH Series works: An exhibitor can check Owner-Handler on an entry form; if they do, then they can enter the AOH class. (Otherwise, no.) The steward’s book is marked with an asterisk next to AOH entrants — but the judges’ book is NOT marked. During showing, keep everyone in the ring after BOB, and then we can keep AOH exhibitors afterward. The steward also tells AOH reserve and class winners to stick around. After Best AOH in Breed is chosen, the host club has AOH Groups to contend with. Publicity: 107.5 Frank and other associated stations are running spots for the show starting May 11. (It was free!) 99.9 Wolf, 96.9 — 15 times on each station. Parking for spectators is $4 a carload. We split the proceeds with Wassamki. Setup time is 2 PM Wednesday the 14th, rain or shine. We’ll have pizza. Show time starts 8:30 all 4 days. Awards Committee: Name Badges: Plastic badges will cost as much as a metal one. Tut’s recommends gold metal with black lettering, no logo. Cost is approximately $8 each. 1.5x3 or 2x3”. Karen Gatchell thanked Gloria and Sarah for all their work on awards.

Karen G. moved that the club pay for metal pins (1.5x3”), plus some extra (4?) generic ones with just the club name. Pollie seconded. It was also decided that we ask about pins with the logo. Gloria will give Phil our logo. She will get the $45 setup charge for our logo. We will also wait till after the show to further discuss plaques, awards, deadlines, putting in the newsletter, etc. Plaques: cost $28.50 per plaque. Gloria will get Phil at Tut’s to do a single setup charge for the logo, and then we can use it on both the pins and the plaques. Tut’s can do lapel pins, but we need to order 100 or more at once and there is a casting cost. Sunshine Committee: Steve requested to have a card sent on behalf of the club for Susan Parsons. Sandy Bergeron moved that we also send a donation of $100 to the Skye club; Pollie seconded. Passed without discussion. Steve asked Sarah to note in the card that we are making a donation to STCA in Susan’s memory. Have all club members signed Sarah’s template for signing cards? Sarah sent a card to Danielle, one to Sandy, one to Gloria, one to Pollie and Carroll. She asked about the club’s policy regarding donations in memory of immediate family. Election of New Members: Ron Geer reiterated his application. Sandy Bergeron and Mary Bateman sponsored him. Ron was voted in unanimously. Unfinished Business: Still no volunteers for President. Banner has been picked up and paid for. New Business: Susan Metcalf received a form from AKC with some blanks in it. We need a Legislative Liaison, so contact her ASAP if you’re interested in the

job. Charlotte has a new email address: [email protected]. Rescue/Public Education: Danielle. Newsletter Editor: Sarah. Ron says that the entry form in the premium list was a real struggle to figure out. Even though all premiums follow the same format, it’s not very user-friendly. Steve still has some checks for the YCKC account. He will send the donation to STCA while we wait for Carroll to get the checkbook and bank account. No meeting in May. Next meeting is June 2 at 7 PM — last meeting before the summer break. Motion to adjourn: Sandy Bergeron moved, Karen Gatchell seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM. Respectfully submitted,

Karen Norteman

A Royal Dog and Expert Hunter Join AKC Family (Monday, April 28, 2014)

The Coton de Tulear and Wirehaired Vizsla Gain Full AKC Recognition

New York, NY — The pack has expanded!

The American Kennel Club® (AKC®) announced today the Coton de Tulear and Wirehaired Vizsla will be welcomed to its litter of recognized breeds this year, growing AKC’s family to 180.

“The AKC is excited to recognize these friendly, outgoing breeds, giving dog lovers everywhere even more choices to fit their lifestyle,” said AKC Spokesperson Gina DiNardo. “While they differ in exercise and grooming needs, both are sweet, loyal, loving family companions.”

Known as the “Royal dog of Madagascar”, the Coton de Tulear joins the Non-Sporting group. The breed originated on the island of Madagascar and was owned only by nobleman. Cotons are small, sweet dogs with a lot of heart. They thrive on human companionship and make loyal family pets. They get along well with children, as well as other dogs. Their long, cotton-like coat requires regular brushing. Additional information on the breed can be found on the United States of America Coton de Tulear Club’s website at www.usactc.org.

An athletic breed with an excellent nose for hunting and tracking, the Wirehaired Vizsla joins the Sporting Group. The breed originated in Hungary as a hunting dog that could withstand extreme weather and rough field conditions, which is why they have a long, dense, wiry coat. They are gentle, outgoing, friendly dogs that make wonderful companions. Because of their athletic nature, Wirehaired Vizslas do best with active families. Additional information on the breed can be found on the Wirehaired Vizsla Club of America’s website at www.whvca.us.

Both breeds will be eligible to compete in their respective groups beginning July 2nd of this year.

To become an AKC recognized breed there must be a minimum number of dogs geographically distributed throughout the U.S., as well as an established breed club of responsible owners and breeders. Breeds working towards full recognition are recorded in AKC’s Foundation Stock Service® (FSS®). More information on the process can be found at akc.org.

AKC Expands Therapy Dog Titling Program

(Monday, May 12, 2014)

New York, NY – In an effort to honor the thousands of therapy dog teams that make a difference in the lives of others daily, the American Kennel Club® (AKC®) has added four new titles to the popular AKC Therapy Dog™ program.

In addition to the AKC Therapy Dog (ThD) title (awarded after 50 visits), the AKC now offers:

AKC Therapy Dog Novice (ThDN) – Awarded after 10 visits

AKC Therapy Dog Advanced (ThDA) – Awarded after 100 visits

AKC Therapy Dog Excellent (ThDX) – Awarded after 200 visits

AKC Distinguished Therapy Dog (ThDD) – Awarded after 400 visits

“The AKC heard from many dog owners whose dogs had already earned the ThD title and who wanted additional formal recognition of their ongoing commitment to volunteering to help others. We’re pleased to expand the AKC Therapy Dog program as a result of these requests,” said Doug Ljungren, Vice President of AKC Sports and Events. “We’ve also added a way to acknowledge beginning therapy dogs, hoping that this will encourage even more dogs and owners to participate in therapy dog work.”

Dogs who are registered and approved by recognized therapy dog organizations may apply to earn the AKC Therapy Dog titles, which will be listed on the dog’s AKC title record. Any dog, including mixed breeds, can earn AKC Therapy Dog titles as long as the dog is AKC-registered, listed with AKC Canine Partners or enrolled in the Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program. AKC does not train or certify therapy dogs.

Applications for the new titles will be accepted beginning June 1st, with titles awarded beginning July 1st.

To apply for a title or learn more about the AKC Therapy Dog program, visit http://www.akc.org/dogowner/therapy/index.cfm.
