On behalf of the Organising Committee, I wish to welcome 56 teams from 21 cities participating in

the main events. With the 2nd World Mind Sport Games and the 7th APBF Congress just days away,

this turnout is a nice surprise. I look forward to meeting old and new friends, especially over 100

young future stars of the game. I must thank all of you for coming, and for your unwavering support

of these championships.

Mr. Ding Guan Gen, the Legacy of a Patriarch

My friendship with Ding Guan Gen began in 1980, when hefirst led the Beijing team to participate in the inaugural Hong Kong Inter City Tournament where I was then the Chairman of the Organization Committee. Perhaps he held me in

some esteem after this historical event, for in the three decadesfollowing, I was granted the special privilege of meeting him in person whenever he was available.

Ding was definitively the most influential person to have laid the foundation and paved the way for the development of bridgein China,

He initiated China into the international arena - the 1980 Hong Kong Inter City and shortly thereafter, China’s debut in the World Championship in Biarritz in 1982. He singlehandedly built up the Chinese teams by way of his intense training

and mentoring programs. For his tireless efforts, the ChineseLadies team deservedly won top ranking in the world and the Open team within the top eighth spot. Also because of Ding,China is now regarded as a formidable world bridge

power as reflected by the game’s tremendous popularity and high playing standard within the nation. Ding has also made significant contributions to the bridgeworld. China hosted two World Championship events: The first

in 1995 in Beijing and followed up twelve years later inShanghai, 2007. Had it not been for Ding’s relentless support and crucial inputs, the hosting of these events would hardly be possible. Ding scored his hat trick when Beijing hosted the

First Mind Sports Games 2008. In 2006 World Bridge Federation ( WBF ) heralded Ding with its highest accolade (second person to be so honored by the WBF after China’s patri-

arch Deng Xiao Ping). In 2008, Ding was elected as WBF Congress President.

Back in 1986, I introduced my boss the Chairman Bob Galvin of Motorola to Ding (then the Minister of Railroad). Galvin was deeply impressed by Ding’s presentation of China’s open door policy and economic reform which justified Motorola decision to make a mega investment in China. (Motorola Chinawas regarded as the most successful investment dur-

ing China first 30 years of economic reform). Galvin remarked after the meeting that Minister Ding was assuredly of State leaders’caliber, a statement which held true as Ding was elevated to the very senior level as an alternate Politburo mem-

ber only a year later and in 1992 promoted to be a full member.

To all those who knew him, Ding was undoubtedly an ardent believer in strict discipline. He always made it a point to study and analyze nearly every deal with his players after the match, so to prepare for them an important precursor whenever a similar situation might arise in the future. At other times, he was a true father figure to his players, first by

treating them all equally yet never failing to look after their individual requirement in spite of his hectic schedule for his

country. Ding’s pioneering spirit and empowering influence on the development of bridge in China had no forebear. In

years to come, history will show China’s advancement in world bridge owe it all to its beloved pioneer, Mr. Ding Guan Gen.

Message from the Daily Bulletin Editor Steve Wong

Many of you may not know that I have been once the Daily Bulletin Editor of this event in

2003. After all these years, I wish our work this time (jointly with Song Ziao, the Chinese

Bulletin Editor) could still live up to your expectation. We do hope you will take the time

before matches begin every day to read these Bulletins and also find it worthwhile to re-

read them at your leisure time after the event.

For those participating in the 2nd World Mind Sports Games to be held in Lille, France,

from August 9 to 23, this Championship is best timed for them to warm up. Be more

alert when you come across Ms Lusje Bojoh and Ms Joice Tueje of the Jakarta Ladies (the

Indonesia Ladies team), Ms Esther Sophonpanich and Somchai Baisamut of CBLT/Thai,

Chalermpol Wongwaiwit and Piya Thongthammachat of RSBC/Thai (the Thailand Open

team), Shi Zhengjun (石正鈞) of Kuncheng Group (the China Open team), Henky Lasut

and Eddy Manoppo of North Sulawesi (the Indonesia Senior team).

As far as our Hong Kong Open and Senior teams in the 2nd World Mind Sports Games

are concerned, the entire Senior team will play in the Open series of this Championship

under the name of “Hong Kong Senior Fans”. On the other hand, four of the Open team

members (Vincent Li, Ashley Lung, Leo Cheung and Chris Fung) will stay in the “Vincent

Li” team. Since his partner, John Tsang, is playing for the Hong Kong Juniors team in the

14th World Youth Team Championships currently under way in Taicang (near Shanghai,

China), Jim Lee opts to play in the President’s Cup Youth Team Championship instead.

For your information, the Hong Kong Juniors team finishes 12th (out of 20) after the

round robin. In the meantime, we wish the best of luck to the China and Singapore Jun-

iors teams in their respective quarter final match against France and Netherlands in the

14th World Youth Team Championships.

After the draw, my initial picks are as follows :- Group A : Kuncheng Group from China and Storm Riders from Chinese Taipei

Group B : Jakarta Open from Indonesia and Ambassador (combination)

Group C : China Resources Power from China and Adelaide from Australia

Group D : Pan-China Group from China and Derek from Hong Kong

Ladies : Jakarta Ladies from Indonesia and CBLT/Ladies from Thailand

Inter-city IMP Pairs

(HK$200 per pair, HK$100 for youth

pair)

(2 August at 19:30, Regal Ballroom, B1)

This will either be a 1-winner event. Total

IMP scoring will be used. The maximum

spread per comparison is 17 IMPs. The win-

ners will receive dinner coupons sponsored

by COVA.

Inter-city Speedball Pairs

(HK$200 per pair, HK$100 for youth

pair)


This will be a 1-winner event, scored in

match points. You will be only given 5 min-

utes or less to complete a board!! The win-

ner, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up will receive

HK$700, HK$500 and HK$300 respectively.

The winners will receive dinner coupons

sponsored by Regal HK Hotel.

San Miguel “Happy Hour” Continu-

ous Pairs

(HK$200 per pair)


This event will be restricted to play-

ers 18 years of age or older. San Miguel

beer will be provided to all participants free

of charge. 5 segments of 6 boards each will

be played, scored in match points. Each seg-

ment winner, 1st runners-up, 2nd runners-up

will receive cash prizes of HK$300,

HK$200 and HK$100 respectively. The best

4 scores (out of 5) will be chosen to deter-

mine the winner.

DBS Bank Swiss Team

(HK$600 per team, HK$300 if all

youths)


The event will consists of 6 rounds of 8

boards each. The WBF 25-VP scale will be

used.

Geely Automobile Open Pairs Quali-

fying (HK$200 per pair)

(4 August at 19:30, Regal Ballroom and

Monaco Rooms, B1)

This will consist of a 1-session qualifying

round qualifying 28-30 pairs into the final.

Together with possibly the sponsor’s

nominated pair(s), there will be a 15-table

final.

Geely Automobile Open Pairs Final

(HK$200 per pair)

(5 August at 10:00, Monaco Rooms, B1)

This will be a 15-table event, run in

barameter-style. All tables will be playing

the same boards at the same time. Each

pair will meet every other pair. The prize

for the winning pair is HK$4,000, 2nd is

HK$2,000, 3rd is HK$1,000, 4th is HK$500.

Inter-city Mixed Pairs

(HK$200 per pair)


This will be a 1-winner event, scored in

match points. The winners will receive

buffet dinner coupons sponsored by Regal

HK Hotel.




Other Championships Information

Geely Automobile Swiss Pairs

(HK$200 per pair)


5 segments of 6 boards each will be played,

scored in match points. The prize for the

winning pair is HK$700, 2nd is HK$500, 3rd

is HK$300.

Overall Winner

“Ranking Points” will be given to each

player in each event, depending on the fin-

ishing position. The player with the highest

ranking point will be the overall winner. The

winner, 1st runner-up, 2nd runner-up, 3rd run-

ner-up will receive HK$3,000, HK$1,500,

HK$1,000 and HK$500 respectively.

Registration Deadline

For all pairs events, 15 minutes prior to

the official starting time. For the DBS

Swiss Team, ½ hour before the official

starting time.

每一輪的第 1名均獲得 HK$300、第 2名

HK$200、第 3名 HK$100。總冠軍將計算

5輪得分的最好 4輪、計算平均得分率。

星展銀行瑞士式隊制賽

(每隊$600, 青年牌手$300)

(8月 4日 11:00, 富豪廳, B1)

這個項目包括 6輪比賽、每輪 8副牌、採用

瑞士制輪轉。第一輪、少許参賽隊將被列為

種子隊、而第 2輪到第 5輪都將由 ACBL-

SCOR程序排定對陣。第 6輪的比賽則規定

第 1名 v第 2名、依次排列。比賽使用世界

橋聯 25分制 VP表。
