As winter and the school year near an end, so too does the Winston Heights/Mountview Community Association’s work year. It’s been 12 months since you elected your current board and they set out to improve the neighbourhood afresh.

I invite you (yes, YOU) to attend the 2014 Community Association Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, May 27 where I will share details about the work the dozens of volunteers (and your neighbours!) have undertaken on your behalf this year. It really is an impressive list.

I also invite you to arrive at 6 pm to join me and some special guests in personally thanking each of those volunteers for all of that amazing work at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party. Whether you volunteer, want to start volunteering or just to celebrate them with us, you are invited to join.

That leads me to the obvious: would you like to be one of the volunteers being celebrated next year? If so, come on by to the event and we can talk about what you can do to make Winston Heights-Mountview an even better place to live or work. (Bring your good ideas too, if you have some!)

If you really want to take on a bigger role why not consider joining the board of the Community Association? If you think this is something you’d be interested in please reach out to Christine Johns who is chairing this year’s Nominating Committee, to express interest or just ask questions. Everyone is welcome! Christine can be reached at [email protected] or 403-510-9080.

Traffic SurveyIn January, we reported the preliminary results of the October

Traffic Survey, shown below, which indicated the top three traffic concerns of survey respondents were speeding on streets and avenues, traffic volume and speeding in playground zones.

After many hours categorizing and analyzing the survey data, The Traffic Committee can now report more detailed results.

Of those who reported speeding on streets and avenues as a con-cern, 6th Street was identified by the most respondents, 28% of the total. For those who listed volume as their concern, 6th Street also ranked highest (33% of the respondents). The two playgrounds most often identified by those concerned with playground speeding were the Victory Park playground zone and the playground zone on 6th Street and 32nd Avenue. Close behind was the 27th Avenue play-ground zone and the Munro Park zone. Respondents who identified

intersection safety and noncompliance with traffic signs most fre-quently were concerned with the intersections around Mount View School. The greatest number of respondents who were concerned with crosswalk safety noted their area of concern was 6th Street fol-lowed by Edmonton Trail.

Poor visibility was a concern raised by 20 % of those surveyed. The Traffic committee has confirmed that residents can call 311 to report overhanging branches or bushes that obstruct visibility and the City will prune branches, if the trees or shrubs are on City property including boulevards.

Traffic enforcement was a concern of 20% for respondents and many comments called for greater police presence to reduce speeding and traffic sign violations. Suggestions for addressing traffic problems included speed bumps and other traffic calming measures as well as a reduced speed limit on certain streets or throughout the community.

LED stands for “Light Emitting Diode.” Each diode in an LEDstreetlighting lamp can be controlled to light a specific area, meaning less light is lost and less energy is used which equalsa longer life span.

The approximate amount we would save in ourannual electricity costs assuming a minimum 30% gain in efficiency.

After consulting with Th e Calgary Hor-ticultural Society to determine an ideal lo-cation and considering the right amount of sunshine and proper land conditions, the garden will be located in the northwest cor-ner of the fi eld next to the WHMCA hall. A little history about the Community Gar-den… the idea was fi rst introduced to the community in August 2012 at a public session held to gauge the level of community interest. Out of that session, a volunteer committee was formed to undertake further research, consul-tation and planning. Extensive community consultation included an open house, meet-ings with other community committees and individuals, updates to the WHMCA Board and two door-to-door campaigns.

Th e community garden would not be pos-sible without the support from corporate and government grants but most important-ly from our community residents and local businesses. A huge thank you to all of you!

I believe the absence of a clear vision and framework for guiding neighbourhood change is the single biggest barrier we face in achieving both our 50-50 policy objectives as well as ensuring that the inevitable change Winston Heights-Mountview will experi-ence is a good thing for residents.

While the transformation of how we plan and develop our neigh-bourhoods is underway at City Hall (called NextCITY), I believe that a strong voice at the Community Association level is essential to suc-cess. I’m happy to report that NextCITY is proposing a neighbour-hood workshop tool that will help Winston Heights - Mountview develop an even stronger voice.

I encourage you to get involved with neighbourhood visioning at your Community Association and please contact my offi ce to stay up to date with planning processes impacting Winston Heights - Mountview. Team Ward 9 is standing by to receive your feedback at 403.268.5330 or [email protected].

- Ward 9 Councilor Gian-Carlo Carra

Th e P.U.P.P.Y. ProgramHelp make our parks #1 by picking up #2!

Did you know that pet waste left in yards and parks is washed into storm drains and is the leading contributor to storm water contami-nation? In fact, pet waste is classifi ed as a dangerous pollutant and is in the same category as toxic chemicals and oil!

Th e P.U.P.P.Y. (Pick Up Pooch’s Poo Yourself ) program, a partner-ship with Th e City of Calgary Parks and Th e City of Calgary Ani-mal & Bylaw Services, was established in 2011 to educate Calgarians about the importance of picking up and disposing of pet waste and to make participants familiar with responsible pet ownership and sus-tainable park use. Th is program encourages Calgarians to participate in P.U.P.P.Y. events that focus on park stewardship to keep our off -leash areas safe and healthy for pets, people and wildlife. Experts will be on-hand to share information on a variety of pet-related topics; volunteers will lead engaging, interpretive programs; and supplies will be available for community residents to “pitch in and pick up” waste.

What can you do to keep off -leash areas safe and clean? Always have pet waste baggies with you when you walk your dog. Pick up your pet’s waste and dispose of the bag properly in a waste receptacle. Model responsible behaviours and encourage other park users to pick up their pet’s waste. Participate in the P.U.P.P.Y. program events to learn about sustainable park use and responsible pet ownership. Or-ganize a community cleanup in your favourite off -leash area or park by registering for a green project.

Rain Barrel and Composter SalesSaturday, May 31st (9am – 1pm) First Calgary Financial TransCanada: 510, 16th Ave NE

Calgarians are getting ready for spring… and that means rain sea-son and of course, gardening! Whether you skillfully harvest home-grown veggies or are just starting out with a few perennials, nothing makes your plants happier than un-chlorinated rainwater and nutri-ent rich compost. In fact it will make your wallet happier too! Given that one third of the average Calgarian’s water bill is spent on gardens and lawns and that 60% of our “garbage” is compostable, using rain barrels and composters just makes good sense! Last year we helped Calgarians save over 1.8 million litres of water and divert 8 garbage trucks full of organic waste from the landfi ll!

Join the one in three Calgarians making small changes for a big impact in their own backyards. Join us at our First Calgary Financial TransCanada (510, 16th Ave NE, Calgary, T2E 1K4) Rain Barrel and Composter Sale on May 31st or see the pre-sale website to see a full list of the 11 sales happening across Calgary from April to August!

Our experts will be on hand at the sale to show you how to set up and maintain your rain barrel and composter. Composters are only $40 and Rain Barrels start from $60.

To pre-order your rain barrel and composter and see the full list of sales happening across the city visit us at www.greencalgary.org/rain.

Spring finds us busy and preparing for many exciting events. We are planning the next stage of our naturalization project; we

would like to add a Little Free Library, a few trees, a small raised garden and a living sculpture. In order to see this project through to fruition, we require a professional to help us design the space by way of a blueprint. Currently, we are looking for a landscape architect or horticulturalist who may be interested in volunteering their time in exchange for advertising signage in our naturalization space. If you would like to volunteer your services, please call the school at 403-777-6300. Next year, when we start to create our space, we will also need volunteers with a green thumb to help us. If interested, we invite you to call the school and provide us with your contact information. It may be several months before we begin this work, but we would love to start gathering a list of interested volunteers.

As always, thank you for your support. Mount View School is proud to be part of this vibrant and growing community!

Ecole Georges P. Vanier SchoolGeorges P. Vanier has a vibrant Fine Arts program. Our talent

show is taking place on May 9th, our Grade 9 performing art class is presenting an interesting play on Thursday May 15th: 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse and our Grade 8 performing art class

is also presenting an exciting play: Law & Order: Fairy Tale Unit. This one will take place on June 11th at 7:00 p.m. Meanwhile, our band will try to win back the title of top Jr. High band in Alberta at the Alberta Band Festival in Red Deer. Their final concert is taking place on June 5th at the Rosza Center at 7:00 p.m. In athletic news, students will attend a Track & Field meet on May 8th. Our Grade 9 students will be going on two fantastic trips at the end of the month; some going to camp Chief Hector while another group is visiting Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City. For more information about those activities or the school in general, please call 403-777-7460.
