Be a Good Neighbour, Clear the SnowWe’re in the depths of winter and it’s time to be mindful of how the buildup of ice and

snow on city sidewalks can post a risk of injury to Calgarians. Older adults, those with mobil-ity issues or parents pushing strollers or walking with young children, may find it treacherous to venture out if neighbours are not diligent about clearing the ice and snow. All of us can help make walking in our communities safe for everyone if we work together and follow the regulations set out in Calgary’s Street Bylaw.

Property owners are responsible for clearing all sidewalks adjacent to their property. This means removing all snow and ice down to the bare concrete within 24 hours after the snow

stops falling. If, as a property owner, you do not live at the residence, it is important to work with tenants or arrange for a contrac-tor to clear the snow. It’s also important to note that if a property is being developed, the developer is often the owner respon-sible to clean sidewalks around a construc-tion site or empty lot. The property owner is ultimately responsible for snow clearing under the bylaw. For any ice that is difficult to remove, a de-icing mixture is available at fire halls or Roads depots. Please bring your own container.

Remember that snow from private property cannot be put onto the road or boulevard. Large mounds of snow in the street can impede the fl ow of traffi c, limit driver and pedestrian visibility and hinder Blue Cart and Black Bin collection.

Sidewalks also need to be clear of obstructions such as electrical cords. When plugging in your vehicle, make sure you don’t place an electrical cord on or over any portion of a street.

Have you considered being a Snow Angel? It can be a challenge for some residents to shovel and clear their sidewalks. Th e Snow Angel campaign, now in its 10th year in Calgary, encour-ages citizens to be good neighbours by helping older adults and others in need with their snow removal. All you have to do is adopt someone’s sidewalk this winter and keep it clear.

To fi nd out more about snow and ice removal in Calgary visit calgary.ca/snow or contact 311. For information on how to become a Snow Angel, visit Calgary.ca/snowangels.

Feline Winter WoesAs the weather turns colder, we are less likely to want to be out-

side for extended periods of time. The same can be said for our pets. It seems unfair however, that cats are often treated differently than our canine companions. Dogs are brought in the house or put in a heated garage and provided with beds and blankets to keep them warm. But cats are often thought to be fine when left outside in the frigid weather. Simply put, they aren’t.

Although some may believe that cats are meant to wander and hunt, this is not the case. They are domesticated animals who need our care. Their built-in coats are not enough when the temperature goes below freezing.

Visit any animal shelter during the winter and you will invariably see cats who are suffering from frostbite, especially in their extremi-ties. Cats left outside often lose the tops of their ears because they’ve been frozen so badly. If their ears, noses and toes are being frozen, you know they are feeling the cold everywhere else.

Responsible cat owners and guardians understand the value of their pets to their families, their well-being and to society and treat them accordingly.

But we all know that even when we are diligent about protecting our pets and keeping them inside, cats escape and get out of doors or windows every day in our city. They are curious creatures after all. Unfortunately, they may not always find their way back home.

We can all help to protect our own feline family members by pro-viding licences and permanent identification. This helps to ensure that if they do get out, they can be returned safe and sound. Identifi-cation shows others that your cat indeed has an owner and makes it easy to identify and contact you.

This winter, we can all help to change the plight of our city’s cats. If you see a cat wandering in your neighbourhood, you can check to see if he has identification. If you have the cat in your possession and he

is wearing a licence, call 3-1-1 to have an offi cer come to pick up the cat. In absence of a licence, you can take the cat to the Calgary Hu-mane Society or a vet clinic. You can also bring the cat to the Animal Services Centre if it is during regular business hours.

Best Neighbourhoods SurveyFor the sixth consecutive year, Avenue magazine is asking Calgary

residents for their feedback with an all-new Best Neighbourhoods Survey at AvenueCalgary.com/survey. Th e survey takes less than 10 minutes to complete and closes Feb. 28, 2015.

Avenue awards the Best Neighbourhood distinction based on sur-vey responses and data analysis. “We ask respondents which factors and amenities make a neighbourhood great, from walkability to tran-sit access and grocery stores,” says Avenue editor Käthe Lemon. “Th is means respondents have a say in how all neighbourhoods, not just their own, are ranked.”

To develop the survey, Avenue partnered with Leger Marketing to create a series of questions that will determine which commu-nity characteristics Calgarians deem most desirable. Th e top-ranked neighbourhoods for 2015 will be those that best fulfi ll those criteria. Avenue uses third-party data, such as crime statistics and property values, when ranking Calgary’s neighbourhoods.

“With our Best Neighbourhoods survey, we are able to get to the heart of what matters to Calgarians about the communities they call home,” Lemon says.

Last year, Arbour Lake was ranked Avenue’s Best Neighbourhood, not only for its high level of community involvement, but for its proximity to public transportation, parks and pathways, and ame-nities like recreation facilities, day cares, grocery stores, pubs and a movie theatre. Ranked second and third were the Beltline and Brent-wood, respectively.

Calgarians can make sure they have a say in the Avenue Best Neighbourhoods 2015 results by fi lling out the survey before Feb. 28 at AvenueCalgary.com/survey. Watch for the results online and in Avenue magazine in August.
