The New RiverThe New River starts in Ware and ends in Islington. Itruns the entire length of the Borough of Broxbourne andwas built between 1608 and 1613 to take drinking waterfrom local springs to London by Hugh Myddelton. In1611, King James I put up half the cost of building theNew River and allowed it to flow through his palace atTheobalds (once sited in Cedars Park). It still fulfils its original purpose and provides opportunities for walksalong the riverbanks.

CheshuntThe name of Cheshunt stems from the old name‘Cestrehunt’ which refers to a castle or fortress. It liesone day’s march north of London along Ermine Street, the old Roman road from London to York. In 2001,Channel Four’s ‘Time Team’ archaeologists uncoveredpart of the street that runs through Cheshunt Park, along with the remains of several buildings which arethought to be associated with an overnight resting point. The settlement first appeared written in the DomesdayBook of 1086 as Chestrehunt.

The Old Pond marks the traditional centre of the town.To the west lies the historical Churchgate area whichincludes Bishops’ College, St Mary’s Church, Whit HernPark and the 16th century Green Dragon Inn. It was hereat Pengelly, a house which burnt down in 1888, that theCromwell family lived. Richard Cromwell, the LordProtector, (great-grandson of Oliver Cromwell) is buriedin St Mary’s churchyard.

Waltham CrossThe most southerly of the Borough’s towns is WalthamCross. At its heart is the Eleanor Cross, one of threeremaining of 12 erected between 1291 and 1292 to mark the overnight stops of the funeral cortège ofEleanor of Castile, wife of King Edward I, on its way toWestminster Abbey.

The Four Swannes gantry sign in Waltham Cross HighStreet has been a historical landmark feature in the towncentre since the eighteenth century outside the nowdemolished Four Swannes Public House. A replica wasmade and attached to the Waltham Cross PavilionsShopping Arcade in June 2007 whilst the original swanswere moved to the Council’s Lowewood Museum.

HoddesdonHenry III granted a weekly market and annual fair toHoddesdon on the Feast of St Martin’s in 1253. From thistime, the town grew to be a centre of commerce, with aprosperous market. Traders built town houses, some ofwhich still survive. One of them, Lowewood House, afine example of Georgian architecture, is now the museum serving the Borough of Broxbourne. By the 18thcentury Hoddesdon had developed into a coachingcentre on the route from London to Cambridge withover 30 inns. It is believed that from one of these a“broad shouldered, pock-marked man” called DickTurpin operated during the 1730s, holding up travellerson the Hoddesdon to Ware Road. Today, some of theinns remain, such as the Golden Lion (1535), White Swan, Salisbury Arms (both 16th century) and the BellInn (1660).

The Hoddesdon Clock Tower was built in the town centre in 1835 and is now a listed building.

BroxbourneThe hamlet of Broxbourne, from which the Boroughtakes its name, contains St Augustine’s Church, built inthe early 15th century. Behind the church are theremains of Broxbourne Mill, first mentioned in 1086 inthe Domesday Book. A footpath from the church leadsto the Broxbourne conservation area and the New RiverHeritage Trail. One of the principal features are theMonson Alms Houses built of red brick in 1728.

WormleyWormley contains several well-preserved buildingsfrom various periods. The Queen’s Head public house(where courts were held in the 18th century) and theOld Manor House (a timber framed building) are both oflate medieval origin. West of the village and adjacent tothe church stands Wormleybury, a large house built in 1767to designs of Robert Mylne.

The Finest Farewell for Your Loved One.Jim Gardener and his family, Kathy, Mark, Kate and Julie have been open at the top of Cadmore Lane since December 2007 with their new Funeral Directors. As a family they previously owned The Cheshunt Funeral Parlour and The Enfield Funeral Parlour, but sold them in 2004 due to health problems. They would like to stress that they have no connection with the old businesses.

Jim Gardener and his family have established a reputation within the community by providing families with a very personalised and compassionate service.

Jim Gardener and Family Funeral Directors is run with the emphasis on giving the time, courtesy, care and professionalism needed when a family loses someone dear. The family offers a full range of funerals, all of which include the use of the beautiful Angel or Cherub Chapels of Rest where families can seek comfort with their loved ones.
