I feel very honored to be joining the DVA team here at King as Adjutant.

I’m already extremely impressed with the level of professionalism and dedication I have seen. I have a lot to learn and will be asking many questions when I visit different buildings and areas, so I appreciate your patience as I learn what I can do for King, the members and the staff. My job is to serve each of you and give you the resources needed to do your job as effectively and efficiently as possible.

A little bit about me, I have worked the past 20 years with the Department of Transportation, most recently as the North Central Regional Manager, managing 27 DMV offices in a 21-county area. I spent 22 years in the US Army as an Aeromedical Evacuation Pilot, where I held numerous positions from Flight Platoon Leader to Unit Commander to State Aviation Liaison Officer. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree from the UW-LaCrosse and a Master’s Degree in Management from Cardinal Stritch University. I’m married to my husband, Alan, who is on his 33rd year of service in the US Army. He is full-time in the Wisconsin Army National Guard and is the Aircraft Mechanic Supervisor at the Wisconsin Army Aviation Support Facility in West Bend, WI. He spent last year, supporting flight crews and maintaining aircraft in a northern FOB (forward operation base) in Iraq. Combined we have 4 children (3 from his previous marriage and 1 from mine). We are very active and love boating, hunting, fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking, training our dogs, and the list goes on and on. We have a cottage in Three Lakes on the chain of lakes and spend most of our weekends up there with family and friends.

Feel free to call, email or stop by my office located in room 148 Stordock Hall to introduce yourself. Thank you for the warm welcome I have already received from those I have met. I look forward to meeting and working with everyone here at King and doing my part to help honor and serve our Veterans who live here.

My name is Kent Falstad and I am the new Agency Liaison for the Wisconsin

Veterans Home at King, WI. I have been with Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs for the past six years initially serving in the outreach section and the past two and a half years managing the Veterans Housing and Recovery Program.

Air Force First Sergeant’s CreedI am a First Sergeant. My job is people -- Every One is My Business. I dedicate my time and energy to their needs; their health, morale, discipline, and welfare. I grow in strength by strengthening my people. My job is done in faith; my people build faith. My job is people. “EVERY ONE IS MY BUSINESS.”

I believe my 23 years of military service and serving as a 1st Sgt. will give me a strong foundation in connecting with Wisconsin veterans, spouses and families. My wife and I recently celebrated our 28th wedding anniversary. We have a married daughter and a teenage son. My many hobbies include hunting, fishing, traveling and enjoying the outdoors.

Proud to continue to serve,Kent Falstad

To have a true walk with Christ! This is the desire of all who take the name of Christianity. However,

this can be easier said then done.

It is easy to keep busy looking like a Christian and yet another thing to experience the abundant life that Jesus desires for us to live. And, that is the problem: busyness does not mean that my life is fulfilling. All it means is that I am, well... just that, busy.

I am finding that as Christians we all need to slow down. We need to take time for ourselves to really talk with God and enjoy the beauty of life. Too often work, family and church responsibilities take so much time that we have very little time for the one who matters most-God!

Let me share with you a brief outline of sorts of what things we can do to make the Christian life more meaningful. Are you ready?

1. The first thing that should matter most to us is prayer. That’s right, before anything else we do in life we should set time aside (no matter what) to pray. Jesus was our example. And, if one wants to live a life like Christ, well then, just follow His lead. The Bible tells us that: “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.” (Mark 1:35) Jesus saw the need to make prayer the first thing He did to start off His day and we should too.

2. The second thing we should consider is the needs of our family or those closest to us. That’s right, while I pursue work, church or another responsibility I should be thinking about how this impacts the wellbeing of my home or those who are closest to me. The Apostle Paul shared this importance when he wrote that, “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.” (I Timothy 5:8) The Greek word provided in this verse means to think deeply about and foresee what is the best need for those around us. This is what we must do as people. All that we do should entail the thought: “How will this best meet the need(s) of those around me?” The golden rule communicates the same thing: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” (Matthew 7:12; Luke 6:31)

3. We should engage in ministry that follows the biblical plan. In the book of James, we find a description which can give us some guidance: “Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this. To visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. “(James 1:27) In our ministry we should seek to minimize focusing on say. “a church building” and focus on the needs of people. In our ministry we should ask God to help us focus on the felt needs of others as we seek to impact lives with the message of Jesus’ love.

Riddle from last month: What has two ends but no beginning?

Answer to last month’s riddle: A rope

4. Lastly, we should be seeking to live the gospel instead of “preaching” the gospel. The greatest sermon that can ever be preached is the life we live. Matthew 5: 15 encourages us to: “Let your light so shine before men, that, they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Each day we should seek to be a good to mankind through our acts of Christian love. Doing this takes an intentionality that can only be pursued by God’s grace. Seeking God first thing in the day and meditating on His word and being infused by the power of His grace are key ingredients to living the Christian life.

Like you, I desire to have a fruitful life for Jesus. In order for that to happen, I must have a life of prayer. My life should be one that considers the life of my family at all times. Also, as I seek to see what is important at it relates to ministry, I must follow the biblical plan of meeting felt needs. And Lastly, living the gospel goes farther in impacting people than any “ministry event” could ever accomplish. May God bless you as you seek to live a fulfilling life of true religion!

Several Familiar Faces in New Roles!

Tammy Servatius has moved into the Deputy Commandant position for the Home. She officially started her role on June 24th. Tammy has been

the Executive Director at Stordock Hall for the past four years. She will oversee our Quality Assurance program as well as work with nursing staff to ensure our programs are the best they can be for our veterans. She will also be part of our leadership team ensuring operations run smoothly and efficiently.

Not only is quality of care a top priority for her, but quality of life is as well. Tammy recently hosted a “Midnight” campfire for our members who like to stay up late. She and another staff person came in from 8 p.m. to midnight and entertained our veterans with music, socializing and having a great time! Please welcome Tammy when you meet her on campus!

Many of you already know her from her role in Marden Activities. Terry is the new Volunteer Coordinator. Terry Heschke has been working at

the Marden for years and prior to this has worked in building activities. Terry not only has a lot of “King” experience in various areas and buildings already, but she is a veteran as well. Terry will be introducing herself more formally in the next Volunteer newsletter. She officially started her role on July 9th! We will be hosting several meet and greet sessions this month so you have an opportunity to meet Terry and talk with her. The dates and times for the meet and greet sessions will be as follows:

• July 11th from 10 a.m.to Noon Marden Multi-Purpose Room • July 31st from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Marden Multi-Purpose Room

Jeff will be staying on to help Terry learn the ropes of the program. He will be transitioning desks to one outside of Nick Peskie and Shelley Jandt’s office. He will not only assist Terry with the transition of the program but help out around Marden Center and continue helping with Veteran centered training for the new volunteer program. Jeff has done an amazing job stepping in to sustain our volunteer program. I want to thank Jeff for his work and continued support of our program and you! The volunteer phone number or email address will not change. Volunteer Office Phone: 715-258-4247 Volunteer office email: [email protected].

Compulsion by Allison Brennan Investigative reporter Maxine Revere has a theory: that the five New York City murders for which Adam Bachman is being tried are just part of his killing spree. In probing the disappearance of a retired couple who vanished the prior summer, Max uncovers striking similarities to Bachman’s MO and develops a theory that Bachman wasn’t working alone. Max wins a coveted pre-trial interview with the killer, whose disarming composure in the face of her questions is combined with uncomfortable knowledge of Max’s own past. She leaves the room convinced, but unable to prove, that Bachman knows exactly what happened to the missing couple. The D.A. wants nothing to jeopardize his case against Bachman and refuses to consider Max’s theory. With no physical evidence, Max has to rely on her own wits and investigative prowess to dig deep into Bachman’s past. The picture that Max puts together is far darker and more deadly than she ever imagined. As Max gets closer to the truth, she doesn’t realize that she’s walking down a road that has been paved just for her. That every step she takes brings her one step closer to a brilliant, methodical sociopath who has been waiting for her to make just one small mistake. And when she does, he’ll be there waiting.

Airframe by Michael Crichton The twin jet plane en route to Denver from Hong Kong is merely a green radar blip half an hour off the California coast when the call comes through to air traffic control: ‘Socal Approach, this is TransPacific 545. We have an emergency.’ The pilot requests priority clearance to land - then comes the bombshell - he needs forty ambulances on the runway. But nothing prepares the rescue workers for the carnage they witness when they enter the plane. Ninety-four passengers are injured. Three are dead. The interior cabin virtually destroyed. What happened on board Flight TPA 545?

The Investigators by W.E.B. Griffin Circumstances force Special Operations detective Matt Payne and his colleagues into the middle of two major cases simultaneously. With the commission of a brutal crime, an ongoing investigation into a squad of dirty cops suddenly grows ugly, and Payne must track down a key piece of evidence before things become even worse. At the same time, a woman he meets at a party may turn out to be a vital link to a group of urban terrorists, and if he doesn’t follow it up now, the lead will disappear. During the next few days,

as he juggles both cases and an increasingly complicated personal life, Payne finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into the circles of some very dangerous characters, and soon comes to realize that it may take all of his skills not only to prevail - but perhaps simply to survive.

Intervention by Robin Cook After performing a post-mortem on a young college student who’d been recently treated by a chiropractor, Jack Stapleton, a New York City medical examiner, decides to explore alternative medicine. What makes people seek help from Eastern philosophies or even faith healers to cure their illnesses? Meanwhile his old college friend, Shawn Doherty, a renowned archaeologist involved in a dig at St Peter’s in Rome has made a startling discovery with huge ecclesiastical and medical implications. When Kevin Murray, another old college, and now Roman Catholic Bishop of New York, gets wind of Shawn’s findings he’s desperate to keep them from the public and to disassociate himself from Shawn. Kevin turns to his old friend Jack to help protect this explosive secret - one with the power to change lives forever

Night over Water by Ken Follet September 1939. England is at war with Nazi Germany. In Southampton, the world’s most luxurious airliner—the legendary Pan Am clipper—takes off for its final flight to neutral America. Aboard are the cream of society and the dregs of humanity, all fleeing the war for reasons of their own, shadowed by a danger they do not know exists and heading straight into a storm of violence, intrigue, and betrayal.

The Store by James Patterson Imagine a future of unparalleled convenience. A powerful retailer, The Store, can deliver anything to your door, anticipating the needs and desires you didn’t even know you had. Most people are fine with that, but not Jacob and Megan Brandeis. New York writers whose livelihood is on the brink of extinction, Jacob and Megan are going undercover to dig up The Store’s secrets in a book that could change the entire American way of life. But after a series of unsettling discoveries, Jacob and Megan’s worst fears about The Store seem like just the beginning. Harbouring a secret that could get him killed, Jacob has to find a way to escape The Store’s watchful eye and publish his expose – before the truth dies with him.

American Legion King Day. There were plenty of members in attendance for the parade for the American Legion King Day. The temperature was high, but spirits were high as well. Olson Hall was also lucky enough to have one of their own in the parade, Carole Moloney, the Queen.

Happy Birthday Army! On June 13th, Olson Hall celebrated the Army’s Birthday with frozen custard from Culvers. And, of course, some good company to talk to with friends from the building.

June sure heated up with activities in Stordock Hall, and that’s cool! Members were able to take a trip to Twig’s Sun Drop soda factory to spend some time cooling off with refreshments and a tour of the factory. Members enjoyed themselves at a Green and Gold charity softball game where they were able to see the Packers out of their typical element of throwing footballs. Entertainment was provided by Del Weed and The Sweet Rollers for our members to enjoy. Laverne of Stordock Hall celebrated her 90th birthday with friends and family, Happy Birthday Laverne! Things sure got wild at the Weyauwega Zoo! Members enjoyed the wilder side of life this month, touring the facility and viewing the animals in style on a UTV. Ah Shucks! Who doesn’t like shucking corn! Ray, Joe, and Roy and the rest of the Stordock Hall members certainly did! What kind of military brat are you - Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or Air Force? There were certainly many “brats” served on the Stordock Hall patio, but not military brats. Members had a great time outdoors socializing; it certainly was not the “wurst” day to be outdoors!

Dream Flight. Three lucky Veterans from King (along with other Veterans from Waupaca County) went on the Dream Flight which was sponsored by the Waupaca Caregiver Coalition at the Waupaca Airport on Thursday, June 21st.

Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation is a non-profit organization established and dedicated to honoring seniors and United States military veterans. The primary focus is on individuals living in long-term care communities. Their mission is to “Give Back to Those Who Have Given.” AADF provides Dream Flights in a Boeing Stearman biplane, the same aircraft used to train many military aviators in the 1940’s. Not only did they take a flight, the Veterans received a goodie bag along with a personal signature cap from their pilot.
