Shannon HardelInterim Commandant
Wisconsin Veterans Home at King
Happy Fourth of July everyone! The Fourth of July is the day Americans celebrate their country’s independence; a day you probably know well, and one that you anticipate with pleasure. I know my family does. The tradition of busy summer months continues in July as we celebrate fireworks, picnics, swimming, barbecues, parades, and freedom. Yes, freedom. Hard fought for, and won.
Independence Day commemorates the birthday of the United States of America. It is celebrated on July 4 each year. On July 2, 1776, the continental congress declared the American colonies free and independent states. But it took the delegates two days to agree on a formal document announcing their action. On July 4, the congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Since then, July 4 has been celebrated as the nation’s birthday. Independence Day was first observed in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. Congress declared July 4 a federal holiday in 1941.
Independence Day is the perfect time for people in the United States to express and give thanks for the freedom and liberties fought for by the first generation of many of today’s Americans. Did you know the statue of liberty is a national monument associated with Independence Day? Dedication of the Statue of Liberty was held with a parade in New York City. The conception of the Statue of Liberty through realization is an exciting read; I encourage all to learn more about it.
I wish everyone a great month. Enjoy time with friends and family and reflect on the good fortune of living in this great country. Thank you to all veterans and families of veterans for your sacrifices.
Blessings,Shannon

New Living Translation of Psalm 150:6 says, “Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD! Praise the LORD!” Let me start by introducing myself. I am one of the newest faces seen at this facility. I am the pastor of a local church, and have lived in Waupaca for almost three years. My ministry includes 10 years as a hospital chaplain, 4 years as a hospice chaplain and over 20 years as a pastor. Yes, add it up and I am not so young anymore. (Maybe that is why I feel so at home around here.) The Chaplains at WVH-King cover a lot of ground going from one building to another, from the basements to the fifth floors. As I am learning my way around and as I attempt to keep up with the other chaplains, I have found myself out of breath on several occasions. Yet, breath is essential to life. When I was a little girl, I had the opportunity to take ballet at the local YWCA in Salina, Kansas. The dance teacher would continually say,“ You aren’t dancing if you are holding your breath; it all begins with breath!”
As a child, I could not understand what she was talking about. Who cares about the breath, the movement looks just fine no matter what my lungs are doing thank you very much! I didn’t have time to focus on my breath, I was too busy moving; trying to look like the older girls who glided across the floor on their toes.
Genesis 2:7 tells us,“ Then the LORD God formed a human from the dust of the ground and breathed into its nostrils the breath of life, and the human became a living being.” Wow…my dance instructor was trying to tell me a biblical truth, it ALL BEGINS WITH BREATH.
When we moved away from Kansas, (and away from my beloved dance lessons) I began to have respiratory issues. I guess you could call it allergies which turned into asthma and often lead to bouts of bronchitis and/or pneumonia. I came to understand that breath is VITAL.
As I have matured, and as I have deepened my spiritual journey, I have come to believe that every breath is a prayer. In life, we occasionally encounter situations where words fail us, even words for prayer. When we don’t have words for prayer, but the only appropriate response for the occasion is prayer, try simply breathing. God knows what is in our hearts, and understands all language, breath included.
Yes, we can move while holding our breath, but the movement is filled with more life and grace when we breathe. With prayer, our movement becomes dance. Yes, we can move through life without paying attention to our breath, without connection to the divine, but is that really life? Remember that we need to breathe, need to pray, need to be connected to the Source of Life.
Let’s all take a moment to follow the words of advice given by the psalmist: “Let everything that breathes sing praises to the LORD! Praise the LORD!”

Dead or Alive by Tom Clancy An entity called the Campus was secretly created under the administration of President Jack Ryan. It was set up to hunt down and eliminate terrorists and those who protect them; this hunting is to be done at will, without sanction or oversight. “A self-sufficient entity, it has no official connection to the American government – a necessity in a time when those in power consider themselves above such arcane concepts as loyalty, justice, and right or wrong.” Jack Ryan Jr. has been a member of the Campus and, along with his compatriots, has waged this silent war around the globe. He is now joined by black ops warriors John Clark and “Ding” Chavez, as well as Brian and Dominic Caruso and Mary Pat Foley. In this novel, they find themselves up against the greatest foe yet: a sadistic killer known as the Emir. The Campus must take him dead or alive, before he accomplishes a strike that will destroy the heart of America!
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King Nine-year-old Trisha McFarland goes hiking with her family on the Maine-New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail. Tired of listening to the constant bickering between her recently divorced mother and her older brother Pete, Trisha makes the mistake of wandering off deeper into the woods. When she becomes hopelessly lost, she tunes her Walkman to broadcasts of Boston Red Sox games. Hearing about her hero, number 36, relief pitcher Tom Gordon, brings her some solace. When reception begins to fade, she even imagines that Tom Gordon is there with her. This becomes her key to surviving an enemy known only by the slaughtered animals and mangled trees in its wake.
The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith Cormoran Strike is a private detective – called in by Mrs. Owen Quine. Owen, a published novelist, has gone missing, and his wife wants Cormoran to find him and bring him home. (She assumes her husband has just gone somewhere to be by himself as he has done off and on over the years.) But Strike discovers that Owen may have run into trouble. The novelist was about to publish a book that could ruin lives, and so a lot of people probably wanted to silence him. After Owen is found brutally murdered, Strike finds himself up against a ruthless killer.
Split Image (a Jesse Stone novel) by Robert B. Parker Jesse Stone hooks up with private investigator Sunny Randall in trying to solve the murder of Petrov Ognowski. Ognowski’s body was found in a car trunk, and it turned out he was a foot soldier for local tough guy Reggie Galen. Jesse is stressed by the case, his failed relationship with his ex-wife, and his ongoing battle with the bottle. Hopefully, Sunny can help him on all 3 fronts.
True Sisters by Sandra Dallas This is a novel based on real life in 1856. That year, the Martin Company was one of the last Mormon groups to leave Iowa City for Utah. The travelers had two-wheeled handcarts and faced a walk of 1300 miles! In this story, you will meet pregnant Ella, Anne (who joined the trek only because her husband insisted), Jessie and Louisa. “Across the miles each woman will learn of the strength born of suffering, and the power of friendship.”

Come after me…and you’ll regret it.”Federal agent Jack Bauer has been declared a fugitive, and an FBI task force has set out to track him down and capture him. Russia has also ordered their covert operations unit to find him. But they are ordered to “kill on sight.” Will Jack survive?
Truth Be Told by Hank Phillippi Ryan Boston reporter Jane Ryland uncovers a big-bucks scheme with players who will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep their secrets. It all began with a middle-class family being evicted from their suburban home. Boston police detective Jake Brogan finds it difficult to believe the sincerity of a man who just confessed to a twenty-year-old murder. Jake’s colleagues take the man at his word, but Jake is not convinced. Follow these two as they grapple with this question: “What happens when what you believe is true turns out to be a lie?”
