FEBRUARY 2018
Lots of laughter and smiles could be seen and heard when students and members got together and created
edible snowmen.
Shannon HardelInterim Commandant
Wisconsin Veterans Home at King
Happy February Everyone!
I hope this writing finds you all well. It sure has been a cold and windy winter so far and I don’t know about anyone else, but I am looking forward to spring’s arrival. February is the third month of winter and overall 2017-2018 has had generally colder temperatures than last winter; however, it is said that it is not colder than an average winter. I also read that early February is the most frequent time for high impact winter storms with lots and snow and wind. So, it’s not over yet! I suggest you cozy up with a good book and warm blankets whenever possible. I love a good book and have been an avid reader since a very young age.
One of my favorite authors was born in February; British novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was born in Portsmouth, England. He examined social inequalities through his works including David Copperfield, Oliver Twist, and Nicholas Nickleby. In 1843, he wrote A Christmas Carol in just a few weeks, an enormously popular work yet today.
It is so important, I think, to introduce our young ones to reading as early as possible. It makes for great quality time when adults read to little ones. Reading expands the mind, keeps us sharp, helps build vocabulary among other benefits, and really offers a way to relax and wind down from everyday stresses. Check out your local library, used book stores, rummage sales and other low or no-cost options for reading entertainment.
One of the authors who inspired my love for reading at a young age is Laura Ingalls Wilder who was born near Pepin, Wisconsin, on February 7, 1867. Laura was inspired to write about her childhood by her daughter Rose. Laura wrote the Little House series which focused on her life growing up in a pioneer family. I used to imagine myself living in a cabin and having the prairie as a playground. You see, books generate imagination and inspire dreams and can take us places we have not physically been to. I hope everyone enjoys a good book this month!
Yours,Shannon

My Memory
My memory has gotten soiled. It has left me foiled.
It does not always work. And that makes me feel like a jerk.
Upon thinking while we converse.I soon realized why you got so terse. My
mind plays games with me.Sometimes now I don’t see.
I try real hard to watch my words. But sometimes they come out like turds.
I ask myself “how can this be?”When I used to always see.
But the MS has done it’s job. And now sometimes it makes me odd.
I continue to strive for Love. But sometimes I need a shove.
Thank you for always being there. To share your love and show you care.

The year 2018 is here! It seems like just yesterday I was in high school (I am not going to tell you what year that was). The years just seem to pass by so quickly and before you know it. . .life has passed us by. Each year we make promises and resolutions that can come up empty or short of what we have desired to accomplish. Yes, we start over again and seek to make a difference somewhere or may I say somehow- yet we still seem to come up short of our intended goal(s). I have come to realize the changes that I desire to make sometimes do not take place, because I don’t really come to realize my deepest need in order for those changes to occur.
So, what is my deepest need? It is found in the book of Revelation chapter 3 verse 20.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. 21 To him who overcomes, I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.
You see, our deepest need is Jesus! Christ stands at the door of our hearts and lives asking us if He can come in and make the difference in our experience so we can make the changes that we desire to make. You see, we do not realize that our
greatest need is to have Him as part and parcel as well as central to our existence, we will continue in the cycle of desiring to be different or make changes only to see that we can only make it for so long, only to frustratingly make it no further no matter how hard we try.
The Apostle Paul realized this in his life and when He did he exclaimed:
Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection. (Philippians 3:8-10)
Paul came to realize that his life could only become what God desired for Him (and what was best for him) as well as make the changes that he wanted to if he gained Christ and possessed Him entirely so that he could know Him who was the power that could make the changes that he desired to make. Paul termed it resurrection power!

A Week in Winter by Maeve Binchy Stoneybridge is a small town on the west coast of Ireland where all the families know one another. When Chicky Starr decides to take an old, decaying mansion set high on the cliffs overlooking the windswept Atlantic Ocean and turn it into a restful place for a holiday by the sea, everyone thinks she is crazy. She gets help from Rigger, a bad boy turned good who is handy around the house, and her niece, Orla, who happens to be a business whiz. Chicky finally opens the doors and welcomes in an unlikely cast of characters. A story full of warmth and humor.
Devil’s Corner by Lisa Scottoline When prosecutor Vicki Allegretti arrives at a row house to meet a confidential informant, she finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. She’s almost shot to death, and two others are gunned down before her disbelieving eyes. How did a routine investigation become a double homicide? She can identify the killers, now all she has to do is to find them. The deeper she probes, the more she realizes that she’s dealing with ruthless killers. Her suspicions take her to Devil’s Corner, a place on the brink of ruin - thick with broken souls, innocent youth and a scourge that plays on both. Sadly, her delectable colleague Dan Molloy is too married to give her the kind of support she really needs, but when she teams up with an unlikely ally, she buckles up for a wild ride down a dangerous street. And into the crossfire of a powerful and relentless conspiracy
The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks After thirty years of marriage, Wilson Lewis is forced to admit that the romance has gone out of his marriage. Desperate to win back his wife, Jane’s, heart, he must figure out how to make her fall in love with him... again. Despite the shining example of his in-laws, Noah and Allie Calhoun, Wilson is himself a man unable to easily express his emotions. A successful estate attorney, he has provided well for his family, but now, with his daughter’s upcoming wedding, he is forced to face the fact that he and Jane have grown apart and he wonders if she even loves him anymore.
Wilson is sure of one thing--his love for his wife has only deepened and intensified over the years. Now, with the memories of his in-laws’ magnificent fifty-year love affair as his guide, Wilson struggles to find his way back into the heart of the woman he adores.
Eleven on Top by Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum is thinking her career as a fugitive apprehension agent has run its course. She’s been shot at, spat at, cussed at, fire-bombed, mooned, and attacked by dogs. Stephanie thinks it’s time for a change. So she quits. She wants something safe and normal. But the kind of trouble she had at the bail bond’s office can’t compare to the kind of trouble she finds herself facing now.
The Measure of a Man by Sidney Poitier The acclaimed actor reveals the depth, passion, and intellectual fervor that have driven his life and career, citing the elements of his childhood that gave him his sense of worth, family, and ethics and how these qualities are essential to spiritual development.
This Life I Live by Rory Feek Joey and Rory Feek captured hearts around the world with how they handled her cancer diagnosis; the inspiring, simple way they chose to live; and how they loved each other every step of the way. But there is far more to the story. Rory Feek helps us not only to connect more fully to his and Joey’s story but also to our own journeys. He shows what can happen when we are fully open in life’s key moments, whether when meeting our life companion or tackling an unexpected tragedy. He also gives never-before-revealed details on their life together and what he calls “the long goodbye,” the blessing of being able to know that life is going to end and taking advantage of it. Rory shows how we are all actually there already and how we can learn to live that way every day. A gifted man from nowhere and everywhere in search of something to believe in. A young woman from the Midwest with an angelic voice and deep roots that just needed a place to be planted. This is their story. Two hearts that found each other and touched millions of other hearts along the way.

You see, we all need a newness of life and changes that will make a lasting and permanent difference and the only way that can take place is if we realize and possess what we need most - Jesus Christ! For it is only He who can bring about the lasting change (or changes) we are seeking to make in 2018!
May those changes become a reality in my life and yours as we allow Him complete entrance and control of our lives!

Waupaca Learning Center. Stordock Hall members also enjoyed a visit by students from the Waupaca Learning Center 2nd graders. Students were selected by the building activities staff and their teacher, and then paired with a member with whom they would best fit with. Members enjoyed coloring, drawing, and cutting different crafts.
Little Sophie turned 1. On January 22nd, Members from Stordock hall had the opportunity to attend a special birthday event in the Stordock Hall dining room; Sophie’s one year birthday party.
