I’ve warned you about this, and even now, our Advent proclamation has been based on Luke’s telling of the story. I use the word “warned” intentionally because Luke isn’t easy on us. He calls us to faith in Jesus as Savior and Lord, of course, but he calls us to follow Jesus with complete devotion and tells us what that looks like. Luke’s Jesus has a soft spot in his heart for the poor and marginalized, and so is particularly hard on people of means (i.e., rich people) like us. He comes right at us, challenging our notions of justice, calling us to love the disadvantaged more than ourselves, and to trust God more than our stuff. He is big on the Holy Spirit, the scary person of the Trinity for many Baptists. I say scary because people and institutions tend to lose control when the Spirit starts to move, and we Baptists do love our control. And when you add Luke’s second volume to the mix (The Acts of the Apostles) you get a picture of how God forms a faithful people by being more inter- ested in collecting and transforming them than he is in sustain- ing old traditions and structures. Get ready to get worked over. One of the things I really enjoy is fresh, homemade bread. Bread making machines are nice, I suppose, but there’s something about kneading dough, pressing it against a floured board, feeling it’s stretch and roll, smelling the yeast. Don’t get me started on aroma of baking bread or the way it melts in your mouth when it’s sliced and buttered fresh from the oven. But dough has to be kneaded, worked over, if you will, before it can be transformed into life-giving bread. So, as Luke works us over, remember that if we submit to the Spirit’s knead- ing , we will come out on the other side more useful to God’s life -giving mission for the world than we were before. P.S.
