What happened to January? Luckily this is a leap year so we have 1 more day to squeeze in all
our activities! The February club calendar is available on our Web site and hard copies can be
picked up from the wall file by the pro shop doors inside the clubhouse. Make sure you have a copy
handy and make your reservations early.
With our new Food and Beverage Director Carrie Dibble and new Chef Joe Ronan at the helm, we
are all very excited about increasing your dining options and enjoyment. We will of course need your
help! Over the next month we will be introducing new items and updating all of our menus; please
come give us a try and let us know how we are doing. Our goal is to have you think of our club as
“your first choice for dining and entertaining”.
On the golf side I want to draw your attention to our new Monday schedule. With the exception of
tournaments, events or necessary course maintenance; we are now open for golf all day on
Mondays! Special rates for guests of members on these Mondays are available! This is a great
opportunity for our Associate and Social members to enjoy the course at a great rate as well! Grab
your friends and neighbors and come out and play! A rate sheet is available at the golf desk.
This months “Pub Night” will be featuring an open house style evening to give us an opportunity
to communicate more information about your club. Come out and meet our staff, golf league
coordinators, committee members, gather information on events and happenings or just to mix and
mingle. We want to be sure you have the most up to date information and know who to contact
when you need help or have questions. Pub Power is scheduled for Wednesday February 24th, look
forward to seeing you there!
On the competitive side of golf; this month we are searching for our “Couples Club Champions”.
This 36 hole event will combine four 9 hole formats of Best Ball, Scramble, Modified Alternate Shot
and Aggregate. The combined score for the two days will determine the overall gross and net
winners. Everyone is encouraged to join us for dinner after Sunday’s round to help congratulate all
the participants and recognize the winners! While we are talking championships, mark you calendar
for the “Club Championship” which will be contested in March on the 19th and 20th.
Not into playing competitively yourself but love to watch the pros play? Consider taking a day trip
to Orlando for the Arnold Palmer Invitation presented by Master Card at Bay Hill March 17—20th,
2016. Daytona native “Matt Every” is the two time champion looking for a three-peat! Rumor has it
that Matt Every shot the non-competitive course record here at Grand Haven years ago when he was
a high school golfer. Go help cheer him on and check off a “must see” tournament and venue.
Maybe you’ll even get to meet Mr. Palmer himself!
Just a couple of golf reminders in closing. Please help us provide you the best service by
providing all the players names for your tee times. If you arrive at bag drop and there is not a staff
member present to check you in, please be sure to come inside to the golf shop. It is very important
for many reasons that we know who is on the course. Also, please let us know if you only play 9
holes or if your round is shortened to 9 holes so that it is correctly reflected on the tee sheet. This
will help us be sure you are charged correctly for golf and help the Handicap Committee when
reviewing score posting.
Big shout out to all our members that volunteer their time and effort across a variety of functions.
Your support and enthusiasm is crucial to the success of the club and very much appreciated.
Remember to mark your calendar to attend this months Pub Night, where you can meet and greet
some of these great people!
THE N INETEENTH HOLE
Happy Valentines Day!
January brought our coldest temperatures and
some of the wettest weather yet this Winter. On
the 19th and 20th, the golf course experienced
its first frost delays as temperatures bottomed
out in the low 30s. On January 23rd there were
rumors of snow flurries in Palm Coast and the
following two days the course saw heavy frost. In
comparison, we had seen seven frost delays to
this point last Winter. Mowing fairways and rough
has ceased and will resume when sustained
warm temperatures arrive. Tees and collars are
mowed as needed. While the greens are getting
rolled more than mowed. The golf course has
remained green for a long period of time and is
holding up reasonably well to Mother Nature.
The biggest issue this winter has been traffic
control. We continue to rotate rope/stake posi-
tions, but seem to be fighting an uphill battle.
Roped areas do not recover quickly enough
before another ,nearby, area is trampled by carts.
Try not to continuously follow the same traffic
patterns! A new rotation for the placement of tee
markers has been implemented in order to
alleviate wear patterns in both the walk ups and
the tees themselves. Recently we have begun the
process of aerifying these areas. You may also
notice that the placement of many tee markers
are different. The reason is to give worn out tees
a break and to perform maintenance to the tee
boxes. This is a short term fix to
a long term problem as we
explore ways to prevent heavy
turf damage throughout the
winter months. Please adhere to the big green
posts/rope stakes, do not drive on tee and green
slopes, and change driving and walking patterns.
We need member cooperation with traffic control
as well as filling divots, repairing ballmarks and
raking bunkers after a shot is hit.
In February a new 5 location pin placement
format will be implemented. This will allow for
more variety and less repeated pins than the old
3 location system. Please feel free to contact
myself, Andrea, and/or Billy for more information!
Spring is just around the corner and preparations
are being made for a successful Spring/Summer.
The first of four-12 ton bulk fertilizer applications
will be made in February. Many lessons about
Grand Haven were learned throughout last
year. The agronomic plan for 2016 will mirror
much of 2015. However, new tools, technology,
equipment, and a vastly improved knowledge of
Grand Haven are in place and will be used to
avoid issues that arose last year.
Please remember...there is no such thing as a
crazy question or suggestion! Member feedback
is more than welcome! Please feel free to contact
me at anytime [email protected]

With the busiest portion of our season upon us I
wanted to take this opportunity to remind all of
the membership of our responsibilities as golfers
to the other players on the course and to the
course itself. Proper golf etiquette has always set
golf apart from other sports. We as golfers have
always been held responsible for our actions,
being our own referees and the caretakers of the
game. Playing with proper etiquette is more
important during your round than playing the
game well. Repairing ball marks on the putting
surfaces, filling our fairway and rough divots with
the sand provided on your carts and raking our
bunkers. Remember even an unrepaired pitch
shot onto the putting surface can lift the turf
enough when the mowers cut the next morning
the turf can be damaged. Carrying out these sim-
ple principles during your round shows you re-
spect the course and the other players on the
course!
The course has been tested
by our local U.S.G.A. team and
we received a “pace rating” of 4 hours & 12 min-
utes for a foursome playing 18 holes. Even in
busy periods our membership tends to play faster
than this rating. Keep in mind these simple tips if
your group needs to step up your pace.
Make one person in every group the
“pace” leader. They are responsible for
keeping tabs on the group and making
sure their group is playing responsibly.
Help each other out with the repair of
the bunkers and filling divots.
Be at your ball and be ready to play
while your partner is playing.
Remember, it is your responsibility to
maintain your position with the group in
front of you, if you see you are falling
behind get every player on board to pick
up your pace.
Featured item in the Golf Shop this month:
Adams Blue Woods and Irons Combo Set
The Adams Blue driver and fairway woods feature Adams' Easy Launch System, which is made up of
three features that help get the ball airborne more easily. The first part of the system is a Velocity Slot
in the sole of the club head for more face flex and ball speed. This feature, which has been included in a
number of past Adams clubs, also produces more consistent ball speed across the entire clubface for
enhanced forgiveness on off-center hits.
The other two elements of the Easy Launch System are a low and deep CG location for higher launch,
lower spin, and more distance, and a new SlimTech shaft with a low kick point that further contributes
to higher launch and improved carry distance. The Blue driver and woods also are built with an internal
draw bias that's aimed at helping the average player reduce slicing and hit longer, straighter shots.

more details.
It had been an exciting January for the Men’s Golf Association when the league had their Shootout
of the top ten scoring golfers in the MGA for the period of September to December 2015. Each week,
as the MGA plays their regular games, points are awarded to members scoring in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
place in their respective flights that compete in the game-of-the-week. An individual earning 1st place
receives 10 points, while a 2nd place finish earns 9 points, and so on. At the end of the period, the
top ten finishing in this leaderboard are allowed to participate in the “Shootout”, which is a
phenomenal golf match, at that. Imagine ten golfers playing on the tenth hole together, and through a
process of elimination, play to the 18th hole where a lone golfer is the winner
This year, the following ten players competed for the coveted trophy of the “fickle finger of fate”
and a hefty cash prize: Pete Bianchi, Otto Bohmueller, Tom Smith, John Quackenbush, Bob
Stansfield, Jerry Chiddister, Hawley Rogers, Joe Loria, Roland Robichaud, and Harry Hasty. Regular
participation, along with regular GOOD participation put these ten in the position to compete for this
period's Shootout Championship along with the honor of displaying our distinctive Shootout
Trophy! The competition was close, the weather was pleasant, and the beverage cart was once again
very popular.
We are proud to announce the first shootout winner of 2016 was Jerry Chiddister, who played an
outstanding round of golf, as did the other contestants that day. At eighty-seven years young, Jerry is
our oldest member. His victory gives hope to the rest of us who hope to keep playing for many more
years! Congratulations, Jerry, on a great win! And congratulations to all the other qualifiers for their
participation, their great golf, and their contributions to the Grand Haven Men’s Golf Association.
Many thanks to Billy VanArdsdale and Andrea Knox for being present throughout the entire
shootout managing issues, questions, and the official scoring, and thanks also to our always
congenial and helpful beverage cart driver Terri, as well as all the volunteers from the MGA, who
made this competition possible and enjoyable for all. A special shout-out to Larry Geiser, Doug March
and Ted Kolva for coordinating the entire event and recording it for the records.

Tournament Director Larry Geiser.
At right,
Shootout participants, (left to right) John Quackenbush,
Bob Stansfield, Joe Loria, Pete Bianchi, Hawley Rogers,
Tom Smith, Roland Robichaud, Jerry Chiddister, Otto
Bohmueller, and Harry Hasty
The new shootout period has begun for December 23rd
to April 20th with the Shootout Competition scheduled for April 26th. We encourage all of
our league members to play their best and work to qualify for the shootout.
Until next month, “see you from the bunker”.
Mike Tebbano, MGA Communications.

Hello All, January was a quiet month for the WGA, but activity will pick up when February and March get
here! On February 9th we will resume our Stableford Day, please remember to bring some much
needed food for the Flagler Food Bank and also to wear your team colors! (Even if they are under your
parka!!)
The February Seagals will be on Monday the 8th at LPGA and WPC will be playing with us on Tuesday
February 23rd, we will have a NOSE game for those of us who are not playing WPC.
Suzette Sweeny has once again agreed to run our Charity Tournament, which will be held on Tuesday,
March 15th. Suzette and her committee have already met to get started and they are asking any and
all members who sew, paint or craft items to donate to a very worthwhile cause or to ask any friends
who might be willing to donate. Also if any of you can get gift certificates from restaurants, stores or
golf courses, please e-mail Suzette before you ask, just to be sure they haven't already been
approached. We need items for the raffle, the silent auction and for golf prizes. Each member may
bring up to three guests if they wish. One event Suzette is sure to repeat is the wine pull, which was
enjoyed by all last year. Each member will be asked to bring a bottle of wine, wrapped tightly, so no
one can see the label, the wine will be given out with the remaining raffle tickets at the end of the day!
Suzette and her committee did a terrific job last year and they are looking forward to another
successful day, the Charity has not yet been selected, more information on that will follow.
Also please keep in mind the Women's Member-Guest will be held on April 8th and 9th!! It's not too
soon to invite your friends!
Once we get through this colder weather, we can start concentrating on our golf games again, though I
know many of you are playing in spite of the weather!!
Here's to warm sunshine and gentle breezes!

The Grand Haven Nine Hole Ladies League continues to grow. In the month of January we gained

Barbara Mott had a fantastic day in the WGA Play Day Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Barbara holed 3
chip shots during her round! Witnesses were Dorothy McInnis and Marcia Munsterman.
Professional golfer Ha Na Jang made history at the recent Bahamas LPGA Classic with the first Hole in
One on a Par 4 on the LPGA Tour. The cameras were rolling at the time and caught the entire shot on
film. Check it out on Youtube, her reaction is priceless. The PGA Tour also has only one Hole in One
on a Par 4 by Andrew Magee in 2001 but it wasn’t captured on film and needed to ricochet off Tom
Byrum's putter (he hit into the group ahead by accident).
