Meet the 2016 Executive Committee

President Sue Stopher

Vice President Felicia Harris

Secretary Elizabeth Allen

Treasurer Suzanne Pearse

Past President Aniek Ragan

Executive Member Angela Briant

Welcome to 2016 and our first newsletter under new editor, Jan Nicholls. Thank you everyone for supporting the WA Branch of The Children’s Book Council of Australia. We really enjoyed our national 70th birthday celebrations over the past year and especially appreciated the work done by Trish Montgomery and Sue Wyche as Awards Coordinators and in hosting the events in WA. We continue to celebrate in 2016 with the 70th anniversary of The Book of the Year Awards and the Book Week theme is Australia: Story Country. The art work has been designed by Shaun Tan. At our WA Branch Annual General Meeting we elected a new Executive and welcomed a new committee member, Dee Cunninghame. I thank the previous Executive and committee sincerely for their hard work and look forward to working with the new team. Our enthusiastic committee looks forward to a busy and exciting year celebrating the authors who write for children and the children who read their books. Everyone is welcome to attend our committee meetings at Oasis House on the third Wednesday of each month. Before our March meeting, we will hold a Special General Meeting to amend a motion from the 2015 AGM. See the notice in the panel at the foot of this page. I urge you to attend if you are able. An exciting calendar of events is in place for 2016 starting with the 13th A Night With Our Stars on Thursday 3rd March featuring an array of WA authors discussing their recent works. Bookings are essential through trybooking. Other regular events such as the Make Your Own Story Book competition for our budding writers, Judges’ Talks to discuss the shortlisted books and the official dinner to celebrate the opening of Book Week 2016 will also take place. All members are encouraged to participate in our monthly Book Discussion Group and local author visits make these particularly enjoyable. All events are advertised on our website and our Facebook page shows increasing popularity. Facebook is an excellent way of transmitting the latest news, especially in between newsletters so please visit it regularly and like our posts. The 12th National Conference ‘Read! Myriad Possibilities’ will be held in Sydney in May. In a change from previous years the Book of The Year shortlist will be announced at this event rather than in April. There is a vibrant program with many authors in attendance. You can boost your chances of attending by taking advantage of our special membership renewal offer. Membership of CBCA WA has many benefits and now is the time to renew and urge your friends and colleagues to join. I look forward to seeing many of you at our 2016 functions and sincerely thank you for supporting the Children’s Book Council in Western Australia. Sue Stopher WA Branch President

Notice of Special General Meeting

In accordance with the constitution, a Special General Meeting is being called to rescind the following motion passed at the CBCA

WA AGM held on 23rd November 2015.

Motion 8: That the interim financial period be from October 2015 to December 2015 and a financial report be prepared and presented to the members post this period for acceptance. Following from this initial period financial reports be prepared for the January to December period. Moved: Karina Oliver; Seconded: Nola Allen Carried

NOTE: The new reporting audit year will be 1st January to 31st December in line with the National body. In discussion with the

auditor, it was decided that having another audit October – December was not required and is an added expense.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday 16th March at 6.45pm at Oasis Lotteries House, 37 Hampden Road in Nedlands. Mem-

bers who attend are most welcome to stay on for the March Committee Meeting to be held at 7.00pm.

The 2016 WAYRBA AGM will be held at Morley Public Library at 4pm on February 24th with local author Deb Fitzpatrick the guest speaker.

You can find the 2016 WAYRBA shortlists here: https://wayrba.org.au/

It’s wonderful to see WA creators so strongly represented.

According to WAYRBA committee member Sandi Parsons ‘We're not sure if this is the highest number of WA creators on the list ever; one of the ladies thought that we had 10 once. But it is the highest number of WA creators in the last five years’.

That’s surely cause for celebration!

WA Young Readers’ Book Awards

Take me to your reader!

We love pictures of people reading—especially children and babies. If you have any delightful photos to share of readers in your family please email them (jpg please) to [email protected]. Readers will not be identified.

Did you know?

Only three people responded to the hidden question in the November newsletter. Congratulations to Gay Tierney who was the first correct entrant. Does that mean hardly anyone reads this newsletter? If you are reading this and would like to win this month’s prize please email the editor with the word eagle in the subject line by 22 Feb.

The WA Branch administers more than $60,000 worth of funding each year to support libraries and schools in their efforts to promote literacy and celebrate Children’s Book Week with author visits and related activities. A major portion of our income comes from sales of CBW merchandise so please consider that when placing your order this year. The 2016 CBW designs by Shaun Tan are sure to be popular and destined to become collectors items.
