The fires, which started last Thursday afternoon in Barranco Blanco in the Sierra Negra area of Coin, have destroyed a total of 8,225 hectares, of which 7,175 were woodland, in the six municipalities affected. A 54-year-old German was killed and five others suffered burns, two of them serious ones. Part of the AP- 7 highway and several roads connecting the coast with inland towns were temporarily cut. The town of Ojen was completely evacuated as were hundreds of people living close to the edges of the blazes, including 300 Britons. However, most had returned to their homes by Sunday evening, when the fires were largely under control, except for one between Ojen and Monda where the uneven terrain was a major obstacle for firefighters. According to official figures, around 200 houses suffered fire damage, and part of the World Biosphere Reserve in the Sierra de las Nieves was detroyed. The president of the Association of Sierra de las Nieves Municipalities said the area had never suffered “this level of ecological devastation”. Hundreds of pathways used by hikers are currently impassable, as are the many trails used by horse riders. The councils of Marbella, Mijas, Coin, Ojen and Alhaurin el Grande have each opened an office to attend to the victims. As I was delivering Thenews last week I wascoming down the hillfrom Mijas Pueblo toFuengirola behind ablack car when thewindow opened and thepassenger threw out astill lit cigarette. True, theywere on a road but it onlytakes one small spark toburn a whole area. OnThursday evening thehelicopters were upwater bombing quiteclose to us and it wasonly on Friday morningthat we learned that thefire apparently started inBarranco Blanco (a verydry, campo area betweenCoin and Alhaurin) andhad spread across toMonda, Guaro and all theway down to the coast.Thousands of acres ofland has been destroyed, people had to beevacuated from theirhomes, some of whichwent up in flames, sowhat I’d like to know isthis: have people whothrow lighted fag endsout of their car windowsgot anything at allbetween their ears? Areare they totally thick, couldn’t give a damnabout anybody else ordoing it deliberately? Atleast two Spanishneighbours of mine havehad fires in the lastmonth or so and it justdrives me up the wall. Hundreds of firefighters, backed up by emergencymilitary personnel and 31planes and helicopterswere involved in bringingthe fires under control.

The noise of overflyingplanes and helicoptersreminded the thousands ofpeople living out of sight ofthe fires of the tragedybeing played out just acrossthe horizon.

The fires made headlinesaround the world. The Costadel Sol is one of Spain'smost popular holidaydestinations for people fromas far away as China and asclose as France or Portugal.Marbella itself is famous forits up-market hotels andvillas and is a favouritehaunt of wealthy foreigners. The whole area affected isalso home to large British,German and Scandinaviancommunities.

The embassies of theforeigners affected workedclosely with the Spanishauthorities and consularstaff were deployed to assist

their nationals who neededhelp. The authorities areinvestigating the cause of

the fires and have not ruledout that they could havebeen started deliberately.

A fourth forensic reportordered on the humanremains thought to belongto the children of JoséBretón , José and Ruth, whowent missing on October8th last year, has confirmedthey are human.

The bones were foundamong the ashes of aprimitive home-made ovenon a finca belonging toBreton’s parents two daysafter the childrendisappeared but the policesaid they belonged to smallanimals.

Two more recent reportssaid they were human. Thejudge investigating the case

ordered the NationalToxicology Institute atMadrid’s ComplutenseUniversity to conduct thefourth forensic study.

But the fact that thebodies were burned at800ºC may make itimpossible to recover anyDNA samples. Once thejudge receives the reportthe institute will try todetermine whether DNAsamples can be extractedfor analysis.

Bretón, who has been injail since he reported thechildren missing, hasdenied murdering them.

Fourth reportconfirms bonesare human

José Gallego, 72, was literallycaught red-handed – on topof a ladder spraying redpaint over plaqueshonouring the Francoregime at a church in Aspe,in Alicante province.

He told journalists thepolice told him what he wasdoing was illegal “and I toldthem that it was illegal toleave them there becausethe Law of HistoricalMemory requires thatFranco-era symbols must betaken down." Gallego nowfaces charges of vandalisinghistoric and culturalheritage.

Two years ago, hevandalised a plaque at alocal school whichhonoured General JoséMoscardó Ituarte, the

military governor of Toledoprovince during the Civil War. Gallego said he had askedthe then mayor, NievesMartínez of the PartidoPopular (PP), to take downall the Franco-era symbolsand she had promised to doso, but didn’t do anything.“The Socialist Party and theUnited Left who are now inpower haven’t doneanything either, “ Gallegosaid, “so I got tired ofwaiting.”

Gallego faces between oneand three years in jail andwill have to pay for thedamage caused but he hasno regrets. His family werenot persecuted during theFranco era but he wasarrested on severaloccasions for taking part inmarches against the regime.

Illegal migrants evicted from islet

The operation began undercover of darkness at 1 amon Tuesday morning, whenseveral Guardia Civillaunches took their humancargo to the nearestMoroccan beach, wheresoldiers, police andgendarmes awaitedthem.

A Guardia spokesmansaid: "Many of theimmigrants did not want togo to Morocco, but we didnot have to use force andthey gave us no trouble.” Atotal of 87 migrants hadswum or waded to theuninhabited rocky islandby Sunday, while anothergroup tried to cross a fenceseparating Morocco fromthe Spanish enclave ofMelilla.

Foreign Minister JoseManuel Garcia-Margallotold reporters earlier this

week that the two invasionshad been co-ordinated by"mafia who traffic humanbeings". He said somewomen and children onthe islet who were in urgentneed of humanitarian helphad been transported tonearby Melilla but theremaining 81 had been lefton the island with blankets, water and food.

The Isla de Tierrabelongs to the Alhucemasarchipelago near theSpanish enclave ofMelilla, one of the easiestgateways into Europe fromAfrica.

Melilla and Ceuta, another small Spanishenclave off Morocco'scoast, attract hundreds of

thousands of immigrantsdesperate to escapepoverty and politicalunrest. The latest attemptsto enter Spain come afterimmigrants managed toreach Peñón de Alhucemasand the Chafarinas Islands, also tiny outcrops inthe Alboran Sea, lastmonth.

Concerted attemptshave also been made toforce the border fence atMelilla, with hundredsassailing the wall lastmonth. Over the weekendsome 60 more tried theirluck but were unable toreach Spanish soil.

The surge of illegalimmigration into Spainwhich began in 2000 ledSpanish and Europeanauthorities to reinforcesecurity, constructing threeparallel fences in Melillaand Ceuta. ADVERTISE IN THE NEWS

Continuing its policy of refusing to allow children under 14 toboard if they do not carry an identity document with photo, onsaturday ryanair turned away a Madrid couple with two smalldaughters because they only had the “libro de familia” (familybook), which is valid under spanish law for national flights. theairline said it is an Ireland-based company and not subject tospanish law as regards underage children. the couple lost theirtickets, costing €427, and had to pay €547 to get home on adifferent airline. ryanair has been taken to court twice – inBarcelona and Cordoba – for not allowing children on board andlost both cases.

On Sunday, theprosecution announcedthe murder charges against270 striking miners wouldbe suspended until theoutcome of a judge-ledinquiry into the events ofAugust 16th at the Lonmin-owned Marikana platinummine.

The charges, levelledunder a controversialapartheid-era law accusingthe miners of provokingpolice to open fire, weresuspended afterwidespreadcondemnation.

The "common purpose"doctrine was used by thewhite-minority apartheidregime to crack down on itsblack opponents, and atthe time was opposed bythe now governing AfricanNational Congress (ANC).The miners will be releasedin batches with no bailrequirements. The group

released on Monday is dueback in court in Februarynext year to face charges ofpublic violence andholding an illegalgathering.

Police said they openedfire on the strikers atMarikana after beingthreatened by a crowd ofprotesters who advancedtowards them, armed withmachetes. The miners weredemanding a huge pay rise

and recognition of anew union. Talks arecontinuing to resolve thedispute, which has shut themine for the past threeweeks.

Unrest is spreadingacross South Africanmines, with 12,000 minersat the Gold Fields companymine west of Johannesburgdowning tools in anunofficial strike. Militantyouth leader Julius Malema

addressed gold miners lastweek, calling on them tomake it "ungovernable"until their demands forhigher wages were met.

Mr Malema has built asteady following among theminers since the Marikanakillings because he was oneof the first high-profilepeople to address minersduring the strike, while thegovernment was seen asturning a blind eye.

About 50 South African miners were released on Monday after murder chargesagainst them, relating to the deaths of 34 miners shot by police, were dropped.

Tigers opt for thenight shiftTigers in Nepal seem to betaking night shifts in orderto avoid their humanneighbours, according to astudy of the big cats living inChitwan National Park byan international researchteam.

Tigers generally movearound at all times of theday and night, to monitorterritory, mate and hunt, but the tigers in the park–where they walk the samepaths as humans – showeda nocturnal shift in activity. The results challenge theconventional wisdom that

tigers need lots of people-free space. This can lead topeople being relocated, ortheir access to resourcesbeing compromised tomake way for tigers.

The researchers saidChitwan’s 121 tigersappeared to have found amiddle ground where itcould be possible to protectthe species at highdensities and give peopleaccess to forest goods thatthey need to live: “If that'sthe case, then this canhappen in other places, and the future of tigers is

much brighter than itwould be otherwise."People live on the park'sborders, but rely on theforests for wood andgrasses, venturing in onroads and footpaths. Sincethe start of the 20thcentury, the world'spopulation of wild tigershas dropped by 97% toapproximately 3,000.

The world's remainingtigers are being pushedinto small spaces, andbeing able to share thatspace with humans is acritical survival skill.

ERE scandal costJunta €17 million

ERE stands for public fundsmeant to be used to payearly retirementcompensation atcompanies implementinglabour adjustment plansinvolving many layoffs.

Since 2001, the regionalgovernment has paid out€647 million to strugglingfirms. More than 5,500employees have benefitedfrom these subsidies, butthe investigation hasrevealed 196 beneficiarieswho were not eligible forthem, with another 45 stillunder investigation –including nine members ofthe Socialist Party, whichhas governed the regionsince 1980.

Some individualsapplied fraudulently, pretending to work atcompanies that werereceiving the funds, whileothers were granted themoney through“administrative mistakes”.If the fraud had not been

detected in time, theunlawful recipients of EREaid would have received anadditional €15 million, withanother €29 million beingawarded to companies.Besides trying to recoverthe wrongly assigned €17million, the regionalgovernment is alsoreviewing the €106 millionit gave to companies, localauthorities, privatefoundations and

universities through 191direct subsidies. Severalhigh-ranking members ofthe Junta de Andaluciahave already made theirstatements to the courtinvestigating the scandal.

Current premier JoseAntonio Griñan and formerpremier Manuel Chaveswill be among the lastcalled to make theirstatements.

The ongoing investigation into the so-called ERE scandalhas revealed that some €17 million were fraudulently paidout to companies and individuals.

The collapse of theconstruction industry leftmany former landworkersand owners high and dry. They had abandoned theland in droves to earnbetter money with bricksand mortar and now a lot ofthem are on the dole.

However, some of theowners who left their plotsuntended for years are nowletting them out asallotments. Such is the caseof Manolo Carrillo, whosefather abandoned his fincaafter getting a mere €45 for1,500 kilos of squash.Meanwhile, Manolo hadgone to work in thebuilding industry.

Two years ago, ratherthan work the finca himself,he divided it into 80 50-m2

plots and has been rentingthem out for €20 a month. The rent includes advice, drip irrigation and aparking space. The onlything he asks of his tenantsis that they really want tocultivate their plots.

Memo fromMadridMartin DelfínWrites for the English language version of

The LocalVoice

Muriel Pilkington

Isaid to a friend the other day that Ihad no idea what I was going to writeabout this week, adding – jokingly –

that perhaps I should dig up one of myold anti-Zapatero columns andsubstitute his name with Rajoy’s. Butthat would be very unfair. These twomen are like chalk and cheese, oil andwater, complete opposites – and nowone of them has the very unpleasanttask of cleaning up the mess left behindby the other.

Idon’t know if Rajoy will be able topull it off, but he’s already passedmore economic reforms since he was

elected last November than Zapaterodid in his seven and a half years inoffice.

The seven fat years are over. Wenow have to cope with thehopefully fewer lean years –

mainly because Zapatero squanderedthe solid economy he inherited fromJosé María Aznar. His critics have alwaysclaimed he was given a one-hour lessonon economics after he won the March2004 election and – if true – he had alousy teacher. He ignored the economybecause he’s an ideologist. These peoplealways put their ideology abovepragmatism.

Zapatero dreamed of disbandingthe Basque terrorist group ETA,which declared a “definitive end

to violence” just over a year ago. TheSocialists are now claiming this as oneof their great achievements. I think itwould be nearer the truth to say that themore politically savvy members of thegroup realised that the best way ofachieving their aim of independencefrom Spain is via the political route. Theopenly pro-ETA grouping in the Basquecountry – Bildu – which is currentlyworking towards that end, is tipped tocome in second in the regional electionon October 3rd.

The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV)– which governed the region fornearly 30 years until the Socialists

took over after the last regional electionby allying themselves with the PartidoPopular – are tipped to win the mostseats again this time around, but toform a government they will have to allythemselves with Bildu. So I’m afraidthe non-nationalist Basques are in for avery rough ride in the not-too-distantfuture.

We’re all in for a pretty roughride. IVA (VAT) has gone up by3 per cent on most of the

things we buy – one newspaper hasestimated this means that we’ll bespending some €50 more a month now, which is tough on the jobless and lowerpaid. However, I think the mostdramatic aspects of Rajoy’s economicreforms will be felt in the public workersector. Here in Spain, the vast majorityof people want nothing more than a jobin the public sector because it is a jobfor life. This is nothing new. Forcenturies, Spaniards have always triedto live comfortably while doing as littleas possible – which has meant feedingat the public trough. I think Rajoy’seconomic reforms will start putting anend to that.

The regional governments and localcouncils – which were used tospending money as if there were

no tomorrow – are wallowing around inthis new reality of empty coffers and nohand-outs for friends and sympathisers. The central government has made itquite clear that the regions are going tohave to stick to a budget and I dare betthat by the end of Rajoy’s first term, theregional governments will findthemselves shorn of many powers. Theiropulent lifestyle has already gone out ofthe window, which will make them justthat little bit more amenable to handingthe mess back to Madrid.

Meanwhile, the far Left hasalready declared its intentionof making life as difficult as

possible for the government – strikesand daily protests are going to bestandard fare from now on. Perhapsthey should look at what happened inthe UK in the 1970s when it seemed theunions were indestructible. MargaretThatcher only got the better of thembecause most people were fed up withtheir shenanigans. I suspect somethingsimilar will happen here.

Rajoy said in an interview with theABC newspaper on Sunday that ifhe sticks to his programme he’s

confident he’ll be re-elected inNovember 2015. Aznar inherited asimilar situation from the Socialists in1996 and it took him about three austereyears to put right Socialist economicwrongs. He did what he had to do and itlooks as if Rajoy is determined to do thesame.

Something's got to giveRough ride ahead

Summer vacation is over and so isthe so-called silly season, when thenews media in Spain have to scurry

around to look for any type of bizarrestory to fill their pages and broadcast airtime. After several weeks of “seeing theworld” – okay, just the US and Prague –I return to my regular duties at El Paísand The News with all normalcy for themoment. Nothing has changed duringthis short break: Mariano Rajoy’s PartidoPopular government still insists that itwon’t ask Brussels for a bailout until itlearns the conditions to the financial aidpackage beforehand, and thosestipulations still haven’t been workedout as we go to print. This is the samemessage we have been hearing sinceearly July. Many in the PP are beginningto believe that it is only a matter of timebefore Madrid asks for a secondhumiliating handout (the first, ofcourse, being the bank recapitalisationplan in June, and that too hasn’t beenpushed forward). Over at the EuropeanUnion, German Chancellor AngelaMerkel also remains firm; she hasn’tbudged from her original position andrefuses to allow the European CentralBank (ECB) president Mario Draghi tobuy up bonds in indebted countriessuch as Spain, Italy and Greece to helpcalm the markets. Again, she continuesto insist on harsh austerity without anyformulas to stimulate growth. Draghimeanwhile has told the EuropeanParliament that the ECB will not move afinger until countries like Spain andItaly formally ask for a bond-buyingplan but that would mean harsher belt-tightening conditions for bothSpaniards and Italians.

Rajoy plans on meeting with Merkelon Thursday this week, so we mayget some sort of inkling as to

where this is all going to take us in themonths ahead. The prime ministerappears confident that he can hammerout an agreement that would allowSpain to get some quick cash withouthaving to suffer the severe measuresthat Brussels imposed on Portugal andGreece. Fat chance! Judging by thestubbornness of our European leaders,it doesn’t seem likely they will cave-inon this matter. If Rajoy wants cash, hewill have to follow the lessons dictatedto him by Brussels. There is no way thatthe EU is going to commit the sameerror and hand bundles of euros tonations that in the past went on crazy, worthless spending sprees with little orno accountability.

Over at the Socialist camp, nothingseems to have changed either. The opposition continues to

insist that Rajoy must take back hisausterity package or risk socialimplosion – the same broken recordthat has been playing since May. Yet, theSocialists have not offered any type ofconcrete formulas that would in facthelp the Spanish economy while at thesame time appease Brussels. In otherwords, no one on either side has anyanswers. And then we have the unionswith their strike rhetoric and threats totighten the screws on this PPgovernment until Rajoy changes hispolicies. How many times have we haveheard this message?

Something has got to give and it isonly a matter of time beforesomething does give. As one

Spanish business owner told me a fewdays ago, Spaniards have beenaccustomed too long to sit aside andallow the government to do whatever itwants to do without taking to the streetsin mass protests. This, of course, beingsaid while she complained how the hikein VAT will mean losses for her business, including losing customers at the cafeshe runs, while her electricity and gasbills will go up.

This government has no solutionsto help Spaniards feel that thismess will come to an end. It

dictates policy on improvisation andhopes that all will work well. And thenRajoy tells ABC newspaper this weekendthat if he follows through with hiscommitments he will surely be re-elected to a second term – a ridiculousnotion to be talking about the nextelections when he is barely nine monthsinto his first term and with no positiveaction taken on his part.

Yes, the silly season has ended andthe kooky autumn period is justbeginning.

BRICA (Brigada de Refuezode Incendios forestales deCentro Andalucia) receivedthe call about Thursday’sfire at 19.00 hrs and within10 minutes the brigade wasready and up in the airwhere they remainedbattling the fire untilSunday. Although nomember of the brigade isallowed to work over 10hrs,between 18 and 20 flightmissions were going outevery two hours to fight theblaze.

On Monday morning Ihad the privilege of visitingthe BRICA base on theoutskirts of Cartama wherethey were busy clearing upafter the long and chaoticweekend. I say chaoticbecause the 1 km runwayhad to accommodate theintermittent take off of fourCanadair Bombers, fourCamoff helicopters (gianthelicopters) 12 Bel 402’sand six air tractors.

Say what you will aboutthe Spanish, but there iscertainly no ‘mananaattitude’ when it comes tofirefighting. I spoke toFrancisco Javier, the baseoperations technician whoexplained to me that thebase stocks gallons of fireretardant that is mixed withwater and carried by theplanes. This means thatfrom landing, filling upwith water and taking offagain, the aircraft is back inthe sky in five minutes.Depending on the size ofthe plane, they can carry

between 2,500 to 3,000litres.

The helicopters onlytake 15 seconds to fill upthe ‘Bambi bucket’ whichcan hold up to 1,250 litres.

BRICA has three bases inAndalucia – in Malaga,Granada and Seville, andalthough two large bomberplanes are housed atMalaga airport, the co-ordination planes arebased in Granada andSeville.

When these kind of firesoccur, all the planes andhelicopters are co-ordinated by one smallplane which flies aroundthe perimeter organizingand directing as to which

planes and helicopters gowhere.

Helicopter pilot, JuanCarlos Guitierrez has beenflying helicopters since1980 and has worked as afirefighting pilot for eightyears. To qualify, he told meyou must pass two courses;firstly, how to fly throughand around fire, andsecondly, how to controland release the Bambibucket which entailsjudging distances andtaking the wind controlinto consideration. Oncequalified, theory andpractical exams must beretaken and passed everyyear to ensure the pilots aretip top.

Each brigade consists of12 men: 10 firefighters, apilot and a mechanic, all ofwhom can fit into the Bel402 helicopter along withtheir firefightingequipment and Bambibucket!

If you think these guyshang around playing cardsand shooting pool whenthere are no fires, youwould be very muchmistaken. Not only arethey on call for fires in andaround Malaga, they coverthe whole province ofAndalucia. During thewinter when fires are lessfrequent they clear theforest areas, removing thesort of kindling materialthat would be likely to burnfiercely if ignited. In thesummer the brigade are, ofcourse, busy putting thefires out.

While chatting with

operations technicianFrancisco (below right), Itook the opportunity to askwhether it was actuallypossible for a fire plane toscoop up a swimmer orscuba diver accidently anddrop him onto a fire, as theurban legend would haveus believe. He laughed andtold me it would bevirtually impossible to dothat adding that they prefernot to use sea wateranyway. I saw the Bambibucket up close andpersonal and could notimage it holding a person,so that myth has been welland truly busted.

So, let me take amoment to thank the braveBRICA brigade who risktheir lives on a regular basisto keep our countryside, wildlife and ourselves, safe.

The Fireman´sPrayer:

“When I am called toduty God, wherever flamesmay rage, give me strengthto save some life, whateverbe its age. Help me embracea little child, before it is toolate, or save an older personfrom the horror of that fate.Enable me to be alert andhear the weakest shout, andquickly and efficiently putthe fire out. I want to fill mycalling, to give the best inme, to guard my everyneighbour and protect hisproperty. If, according to myfate, I am to lose my life, please bless with yourprotecting hand, mychildren and my wife.”

The worst forest fire Malaga has experienced in over twenty years ignited last Thursday evening. The last fire on this scalewas in 1991/2 in the Sierra de las Nieves, although one of the worst Andalucia has seen was the 2005 blaze in Huelva.

Many people love theirdogs and think that it’d bea great idea to breed fromthem – but have youreally thought yourreasons through?

Here are a few more tipson the “why not’s” ofbreeding that we startedlast week.

Because we reallylove puppies!

You'd better be sure youlove puppies becauseuntil you have them, youcan't imagine how muchis fully involved, such as:The mess the littermakes. Can you put upwith constantly cleaningand scrubbing up afterthe puppies, theirwhelping box, the yard, the kennel, or whereveryou keep them? As soonas you feed them, theydump out of the otherend. They then step in it,roll in it and drag itthrough whatever else isin the puppy box at thetime. With a large litter ofpuppies, there is alwayssomething to be cleanedup. The responsibilityyou have with the litter is

not as small for you as itis with Fifi, when takingcare of them until theyare ready to go. Most of itis up to you and you aretied to the litter like anynew mother, only youcan't take the litter to theinlaws at the weekend, oranywhere else for theweekend, for that matter. You had better becontent to spend all yourtime at home. There willbe no more all dayshopping sprees or anyother activity that keepsyou away from home fortoo long, as you have tobe there to feed the pups4-6 times a day.

Now that you have someidea as to what'sinvolved other thanplaying with cute cuddlypuppies, and you are stilldetermined to go aheadanyway, there's muchmore that should beconsidered so we’ll touchon those subjects nextweek.

Most people are familarwith the water tower nearthe Alhaurin Golf Hotel atthe top of the hill – but nota view like this one that wastaken at the height of theweekend’s conflagration inthe area by Paul Harley ofSH7 Solutions.

Many are taking the timeto go through theirbelongings to see what theycan donate to people andanimals who have lost theirhomes and there arevarious drop-off pointsavailable. There will also betins for money donations

in the Coin area and if anybusinesses would like one, please contact Nigel at theOne Stop Shop in La Trocha(Tel.951 315 240). Proceedswill be handled by areputable local lawyer untilthey can be distributed tothose in need.

Now the looters move inYou would think after lastweekend with all the loss ofproperty, personal injuriesand animals that lost theirlives that the whole of thecommunity would bepulling together to helpthose affected. And to a verygreat extent, that is exactlywhat is happening.

However, there arereports coming in fromreliable sources that somepeople who were evacuatedfrom their homes while the

wonderful people whocontrol the planes andhelicopters that drop waterand fire retardant managedto save the buildings, nowhave the problem of looting.

They are being told to re-occupy their properties, some of which have smokedamage, so that they are notcleaned out by these totalscumbags who are nowbreaking in and stealingwhatever they can get theirgrubby hands on.

If you are in an area andsee anything like this goingon, please call the policeimmediately and reportwhat you have seen. Most ofus carry mobile phones, many that have cameras so,if you can get a photo ofthese people, so please dothat as well so they can beidentified, prosecuted andpossibly get people’sbelongings back.

Airline staff fly to rescuegranny in distress…..twice“I was a damsel in distressand twice my airlinebecame knights in shiningarmour and flew to myrescue.”

So says granny of fourJean Leftwick of Alhaurin ElGrande who is a regularpassenger from Malaga toLiverpool’s John Lennonairport where she eithermeets or takes back hergrandchildren duringholiday times.

“I can’t imagine whatwould have happened to usif the staff of Easyjet hadnot understood myproblems and helped usout,” continues Jean, 68,whose family all live in theNorth West Cheshire area.

On the first trip a couple

of weeks ago Jean collectedtogether all the left overholiday spending money ofDaniel, 10, and James, 6,who had spent theirholiday with Jean and herfriend Julia Holley, put itwith her own in herhandbag – and then lefther handbag at home. “Sothere I was on the planewith NO MONEY with twoyoung children,” Jean goeson. “But on the aircraft thestaff could not have beenmore understanding andgave us drinks and crispson the flight once theyknew the situation.” Theboys were convinced theywould die of thirst andhunger before they gothome!

A few days later Jean wasreturning from another

family trip using the sameairline and managed toleave her purse on theplane.

Julia takes up the story:“It was late when we gothome from Malaga airport, but it was only then thatJean realised she did nothave her purse with notonly her money, but all hercards, driving licence,Residencia card and theother things you need toget around here in Spain. She was very cross withherself.”

However the followingday the pair went to Malagaairport and within 10minutes the purse wasreturned to Jean with all ofthe contents intact. Thesecurity staff at the airportand the Easyjet staff were

so polite and reassuring.

“I couldn’t believe it,”says Jean. “Carelessness onmy part totally but theairline staff just came to myrescue, twice. You hear somany critical stories aboutlow cost airlines these days, but to me my airline staffare just wonderful. Andwhat’s more Easyjet arealways on time if not early.'

A tropical paradise in Torreblanca del SolFar up in the Torreblancahills is one of the pearls ofthe Costa del Sol – Las IslasBoutique Hotel andRestaurant. The restaurantitself is named “Fairuz”after a very famousLebanese singer whosesongs are constantly heardthroughout the MiddleEast, and still sparkLebanese national pride.

Both Lebanese andMediterranean cuisine ofvery high class can befound here and they offer awide selection of the best

that Lebanon has to offer inthe way of food and wine.

What you first noticewhen you step through thegate is the absolute stillnessand tranquility thatprevails. This hotel andrestaurant are located in awonderful tropical gardenamid palm trees, bougainvillea, oleander, and birdsong. There areterraces with sea views, winding paths through thegarden and, of course, there is also a pool.

When we arrived wewere immediately greetedand shown to our reservedtable. The restaurant is verypopular both for its goodfood and its environment;it also caters for events likeweddings and birthdays. Soif it's a weekend you shouldbook a table well inadvance.

Once seated, we werepresented with anextensive menu and an

interesting wine list. Warmfreshly baked bread, garlicbutter, olives and pickledwhite beans quickly arrivedas an appetizer. Forstarters there is everythingfrom Prawn Cocktail,Gambas pil-pil, Melon withSerrano ham, and Avocadowith prawns, to Crispyprawns in oriental sauceand Oriental salad withchicken and soy sauce, BeefCarpaccio topped withfresh Parmesan – rightthrough to Goulash soup.First courses start at €7.75and the most expensive is€9.75.

Main courses followwith everything fromGrilled Irish fillet steak,Chicken breast stuffed withcheese and Serrano hamand Roast lamb marinatedin fine herbs and servedwith a pear and mint sauce. For non-meat eaters youcan choose from Hake withprawns in a white winesauce, Grilled seafoodkebab, Pasta with a tomatosauce, garlic and prawns ora simple but delicious Pastawith olive oil, garlic, chilliand parsley. Main coursesrange from €9.50 up to€22.50.

For our meal we chosethe special menu for two toshare – consisting of aselection of hot and coldstarters, a selection ofcharcoal grilled meats forthe main course and freshfruits to finish with. As anaccompaniment we chosea bottle of fine Lebanesewine (Ksara Le Prieuré2009) and a sparklinghealthy mineral water. Theprice for the special menu

was €28 per person, andthe bottle of red wine €21.I can’t remember whatwater cost but it was thefamous San Pellegrini.

The starter plateconsisted of Tabbouleh (arefreshing crushed wheat, parsley and mint salad)Mutabbal – that is asmoked aubergine dip,Hummus, the chick peadip, and Warak Enab(stuffed vine leaves) plustwo different types of Borakthat are little pastry parcelsstuffed with either spicedminced meat or cheese andspinach.

The main course was aplate of a Kafta – a kind ofkebab that is minced lambwith spices and onionpressed on to a skewer andgrilled – and some verytender lamb and chickenpieces. The meats were

served with fluffy Basmatirice and a tomato dip. And,what we thought was veryclever was that the meatwas covered with pieces ofpita bread to keep it allwarm!

The dessert was a hugeplatter full of fresh fruits –watermelon and othermelon pieces, orange, prunes and dates. After allthis, we were feeling socontented that we decidedto forgo coffee and cake!

It was our first time herefor dinner, but definitelynot the last. Las Islas is aseasonal hotel andrestaurant, open from 1stof May to 15th of October. You can get moreinformation about whatthey have to offer as well asdirections and contactinformation from their website; www.lasislas.info

It turnsout that the gift runs in thefamily. His uncle is aboutto hand over to Normanthe responsibility forpreventing a long deadgirl, executed for

witchcraft, from bringingto bear a terrible curse onthe small town in whichthe boy lives.

After her death shepledged that her accuserswould walk the earth aszombies. On eachanniversary Norman’suncle has prevented thecurse from becoming areality and now it isNorman’s turn. But histormentor Alvin puts aspoke in the works and thecurse is finally realised. Sonow Norman mustbecome an unwilling hero, and helped by a smallgang of other ghostbusters

including his friend Neiland Neil’s brother Mitch,he has to fight the zombiearmy that threatens tooverwhelm the town.

This beautifullyanimated movie comesfrom the makers of theOscar-nominatedCoraline and has beenwarmly reviewed. It’sspooky and scary and payshomage to the horror Bmovies of yesteryearwhich may be a bit tooscary for very youngchildren but jump-out-of-your-skin fun for olderchildren and adults.

Expect the unexpected this week and your boat will not be rocked too muchwhen an ‘x factor’ could come crashing into the equation. As soon as you thinkyou have everything arranged there is likely to be something that is unaccountedfor or a sudden change crops up at the last minute. Be wary of making promisesthat you may not be able to keep especially when it comes to those within yourimmediate environment such as neighbours or work colleagues.

Watch your energy levels this week as you are unusually affected byemotional and family issues and atmospheres. You will want to spend moretime in your home and will wish to make it comfortable and cosy. Yourimagination is at an all time high and you will find inspiration for poetry, writing or re-decorating. For you it is all about creating a peacefulenvironment where you can relax unwind and feel content.

You could feel enthusiastically driven by a cause that is personal to you, your willand determination are strong right now and if there is something that youemphatically believe in then there is no stopping you this week. Remember thatyou have needs within the whole process as it is easy to get caught up in momentand neglect your own health. You hold the key to unlocking a gateway that willpave the way for others, something is calling you Gemini are you going to respond?

There could be an underlying weight that you are aware of and thisresponsibility sits at the base of everything that you do this week. Somethingor someone is dependent upon you at the moment and you need to take thisinto consideration without it weighing too heavy on your mind. If you areworrying about things then rest easy in the knowledge that there are helpinghands that will soon be there to help carry the load.

It is time to take the spotlight as all eyes are on you as you exude a magnanimousand dynamic energy. All that you do makes a loud noise and is heard for milesaround; in fact you are the new talking point. From this attention comes an increasein your reputation and this can be used to advertise yourself positively or negatively– it is up to you. No one can question that you show immense courage andboldness to get things moving, in fact there is no stopping you this week.

Home and family are important to you and are the highlight of your focus;you want to feel the close connection of belonging as this is what gives youyour solid footing and inner sense of security to face the world. A bond witha female family member or someone whom you consider to be family willincrease in strength. This is a good point for planning and structuring for theforthcoming weeks ahead and laying down some ground rules for the future.

Walls and boundaries have started to break down and old structures havefallen away by the wayside to reveal a plateau whereby you can build yourdreams anew. Hope is on the horizon and inspiration is likely to be drawnfrom the old traditional ways of doing things combined with a little moderncreativity. You are ready to let go of something so that you can transform yourlife and embrace the changes that are on their way.

You are likely to be called upon in a crisis situation and this is because you instinctivelyknow what to do and have the greatest potential to take over and get straight tothe root of a disaster annihilating the problem at its core. Expect to be busy Scorpiofor one reason or another; there could be another that will need your help or advice.Financially check out your insurance policies or other investments to make sure thatyou are on top of things and have not overlooked anything in the past.

Is someone getting your back up at the moment or making you slightly agitated? There is a niggle like an itch that you can’t scratch that could be annoying you. Theadvice here is to move your focus onto something else that you can scratch and dealwith and the intensity that you currently feel for this person or situation will lose itspower over you. Try not to take too many things on as you will have lots of varyingactivities or invites coming your way – it will be impossible to attend everything.

You could be feeling a little overwhelmed right now as if things are just movingtoo fast for you to keep track of. There are lots of changes occurring and thingsmay have got a little fraught, it is like you have entered into a new phase and theterrain has changed but in the process you have lost your way as nothing isfamiliar anymore. Give yourself time, you do not have to be on top of thingsstraight away and more importantly ask for that help when you need it.

Images and feelings of the past are still lingering and you dearly wish to laythem to rest. It all seems out of your hands though and you could be waitingon another before you can really move on. There is a lot of tension andfrustration around at the moment and something could have your nerves onedge. You can only do what you can do and change what is within your powerto change the rest you have to accept until things are ready to shift.

You are in your element this week literally, ready to pour water on smouldering andangry situations, tempering heaty or heavy discussions and providing an objectiveand yet mediatory role. You bring the balance to extremes and others will look toyou to provide that sanctuary and safe space. Duty and responsibility play animportant part of your planning for the upcoming days that follow as you will wishto also stand up for the underdog if you feel that someone is being trodden on.

Researchers at the AthloneInstitute of TechnologyScientists in Ireland havefound that coconut oilwhich had been treated withenzymes stopped thegrowth of Streptococcusbacteria – a major cause of

tooth decay, which affects60% to 90% of children inindustrialised countries.

The researchers testedthe impact of coconut oil, vegetable oil and olive oil intheir natural states and

when treated withenzymes, in a processsimilar to digestion.

The oils were then testedagainst Streptococcusbacteria which arecommon inhabitants of themouth. Only the enzyme-modified coconut oilshowed an ability to inhibitthe growth of most strainsof the bacteria.

It is thought that thebreaking down of the fattycoconut oil by the enzymesturns it into acids which areactive and effective againstbacteria.

Previous research foundthat enzyme-modified milk

could stop Streptococcusmutans from binding totooth enamel. They saidcoconut oil could be anattractive alternative tochemical additives.

During the study, theyalso found coconut oilattacks the yeast whichcauses thrush.

Researchers at theKarolinska Instituteanalysed the lifestyles of1,810 people over 75 andfound that men with thehealthiest lifestyles lived sixyears longer, and womenhad five extra years.

Being sedentary, overweight, a smoker orheavy drinker is bad forhealth and shortens lifeexpectancy but theresearchers said they didnot know how big the effectwould be after 75, so theyfollowed a group of peoplefor 18 years. They foundthat smokers died a yearearlier, but people who quitin middle age were almostas long-lived as those whohad never smoked.

Swimming, walking andgymnastics increased lifeexpectancy by around twoyears.

People with a rich socialcircle lived a year and a halflonger than those without.Even after the age of 85, lowrisk lifestyles prolonged lifeby four years.

The researchers said:"Our results suggest thatencouraging favourablelifestyle behaviours even atadvanced ages mayenhance life expectancy."Life expectancy for men in

the UK is currently 78 formen and 82 for women.

A spokesman for thecharity Age UK, said therewas "no doubt" that beingactive and having a healthylifestyle would help peopleto live longer: "It's nevertoo early and never too lateto make those smallchanges that can make abig difference."

The shape of beer glassesaffects the speed peopledrink, according toresearchers at the Universityof Bristol. In their study, theyfilmed a group of 159 menand women drinking eithersoft drinks or beer.

The glasses all containedaround half a pint of liquid, but some of the glasseswere straight while otherswere very curved. Theyfound no difference in thedrinking time for softdrinks – people drinkingfrom both straight andcurved glasses finishedafter around sevenminutes.

However, for the beerdrinkers there was a largedifference between the twogroups.

While it took aroundseven minutes for peopledrinking from a curvedglass to polish off their half

pint, it took 11 minutes forthose drinking from astraight glass.

The researchers thoughtthat curvy glasses made itharder to pace drinkingbecause judging how muchwas in the glass becamemore difficult owing to itscurved shape. The group ofdrinkers was shown avariety of pictures ofpartially-filled beer glassesand asked to say whetherthey were more or lessthan half full. The teamsaid people were morelikely to get the answerwrong when assessing theamount of liquid in curvedglasses.

The researchers saidpeople were not concernedabout pacing themselveswith soft drinks, whichcould explain why glassshape had no effect onthem. They concluded thataltering the glasses used inpubs could "nudge" peopleto drink more healthily by"giving control back".

The shape of a glass hasalready been shown toaffect how much alcoholpeople pour. A study in2005 showed people weremore likely to pour extraalcohol into short, wideglasses than tall, narrowones.

Laughter - the best medicine.Crystal Clear Anne explainsHello and welcome back.

This week we are lookingat healing and stress and Iwould like to thank you allfor your feedback and toplease feel free to askquestions or for advice onmy columns.

Healing throughLaughterLaughing for 20 minutes aday, even if the laughter isfor no specific reason willincrease the levels in yourbody of specificneurotransmitters knownas endorphins. Endorphinsare the body’s naturalopiates and their presencein your body can reducepain, and alleviatesymptoms of bronchitisand asthma. Laughter is anatural healer for the bodywatching funny movies, comedy shows and sharingtime with lightheartedfriends or family will helpyou strengthen yourimmune system. Having asense of humour is a vitalpsychological resource notjust because laughter

releases positive chemicalsinto the body, because inorder to find somethingfunny we have to be able tosee it from multipleperspectives. Humour isone of the most valuableresources in the effort tocontrol stress. It’s helpful tofind opportunities to laughevery single day.Remember, every time youlaugh you stimulate therelease of chemicals intothe brain that enhanceyour wellbeing. Don’t beafraid to laugh long andhard producing goodfeelings in your body whichdisable the stress responsein its tracks.

SmilingSmiling is infectious – youcatch it like the ‘flu! When somebody smiled

at me today I startedsmiling too. I passed around the

corner and someone sawmy grin and, when hesmiled, I realised I hadpassed it onto him.I thought about that

smile and then I realised itsworth – a single smile just

like mine could travelround the earth. So if you feel a smile

begin, don’t leave itundetected, let’s start anepidemic quick and get theworld infected!

ExerciseExercise is important. Iknow a lot of people whoare shy or thinking aboutexercising sends them intoa panic attack. No, it’s notalways necessary to visitthe gym every other day.Walking for 15 minutestwice a day will get yourheart pumping faster thanusual and your lungsbreathing more deeply.Exercise has beenprescribed in clinicalcentres to help treatpatients with nervousdisorders and stress.Swimming and riding abicycle can also workwonders for stress levels.Stress is one of the majorproblems in our societytoday causing massivehealth issues for example:heart attacks, strokes, digestive problems andulcers. It’s important to

take care of yourself. Themore you worry and stressthe more you are sendingout all the wrong signalsand ordering more stress.Think positive, be positive,be kind to yourself andother around you. Focus ongetting well, see it! Feel it!Believe it! Nothing everstays the same. If you focuson negative you will receivemore negative.

So try to create morepositive energy in your life.

Remember to countyour blessings and not yoursorrows, for every problemhas a solution and everycrisis is a new beginning.

There have been wild stories of flagson the Moon waving in the ‘breeze’,

shadows at the wrong angles, lack ofstars in the photographs and otherthrow away statements. But thesepeople refuse to accept numerousindisputable facts about the Moonlandings and they hang on to rumoursand hearsay from conspiracy theorists.

I have seen the footage of the flag‘waving in the breeze’, it is not waving

in a breeze, the astronaut is fastening itto the aluminium flagpole and he istwisting it as it slots in. The fact that there isno air on the Moon to slow it down meansthat the flag will continue to wave for anextra few seconds longer than it would onEarth. Anyone watching the footage canquite clearly see the movement as theastronaut handles the flag.

There were over half a million peopleinvolved in the Moon landings. Can

you imagine the difficulty of trying to keepthat many people plus their spouses, friends, children and grandchildren quietfor over 40 years?

Numerous radio telescope receiversplaced all around the world received

the radio and television signals that weretransmitted by the astronauts. The footageof Neil Armstrong actually first steppingonto the Moon was received by a radiotelescope situated in Parkes, New SouthWales, Australia. As the Earth revolved thenthe signal was passed to more and moreindependent radio telescopes spreadacross the globe. The Jodrell Bank radiotelescope in Cheshire, England played avery important role in receiving thebroadcasts. Conversations betweenMission Control in Houston and the Apollocrews were also routed through these hugetelescopes along with telemetry datareceived from the spacecraft themselves, and guess what? All of the telescopes werepointed directly at the Moon.

During the six Apollo missions to theMoon’s surface, 2,415 samples

weighing 382 kg (842 lb) were collected, themajority by Apollo 15, 16, and 17. Scepticsalways seem to brush over answering thequestion; ‘where on Earth did all this MoonRock come from?’ The Lunar samples havebeen studied right down to the smallestatomic level by scientists and geologistsfrom around the world some of whomweren’t even born when the rock wascollected and every single one of them willtell you that it all came from the Moon.

During the Apollo 11 and Apollo 15missions, two reflectors were left on

the lunar surface pointed toward Earth.Scientists now fire very powerful laserbeams at these reflectors and measure thetime it takes for the light to return to Earth. They do this on average twice a week andthe measurements are used to tell how faraway the Moon is. They are so accurate thatwe now know that the Moon is movingaway from the Earth at about 4cm a year.

During the Apollo 15 mission in 1971,Commander Dave Scott performed

an experiment directly in front of the TVcameras. He dropped a hammer and afeather both at the same time todemonstrate Galileo’s theory that all objectswould drop at the same rate regardless oftheir mass in the absence of air resistanceand hey presto! Both the hammer andfeather hit the ground at the same time.

Sceptics talk about there being no starsvisible on any of the photographs;

anyone with even a basic knowledge ofphotography will be able to tell them thatto photograph stars be it on the Moon or onthe Earth requires a long shutter exposure. The Hassleblad cameras used by theastronauts were designed and set to takecorrectly exposed photographs of theastronauts and surrounding scenery notlong exposures of the stars.

There is now a satellite in orbit aroundthe Moon taking photographs of the

surface with the same resolution as thoseused in Google Earth. Every one of theApollo landing sites has beenphotographed showing the Lunar Module, equipment, tracks made by the LunarRovers and even the astronauts’ footprints.

But if you really want to know if theApollo astronauts landed on the Moon

then ask the Russians. I’m sure that the KGBwould be delighted to tell you that theyhave found evidence that it was all a hoax.

Over the past year threeprofessional electronictechnical guys who workedaround theEstepona/Sabinillas/Coinareas appear to have left theCosta Del Sol, seemingly toreturn to Britain.

Now there appears to be noone like them left; the firmsthat they worked for eitherhave no equivalent staff stillwith them – or they have shutdown as well.

It is for sure that there are quitea lot of electronic technicalfirms shown in the SpanishYellow Pages, but none that Ihave talked to have anyEnglish-speaking

professionals.

I am the first one to say thatthat kind of nationalitydiscrimination, especiallycoming from expats living inSpain, is unforgivable and wemust be very careful to avoidit. But, unfortunately, what Ineed is a technical guy who isable to sort out some work thatalready has been donehorrendously by a Spanishelectrician, who said that hewas well able to do what wewere looking for involvingnon-technical computer androuter stuff.

Sadly, however, his optimismwas considerably greater thanhis actual understanding ofwhat he was doing, and I amnow left with an expensiveinternet that doesn't work.

Is there no time-served Brit'out there' with the genuine

skills I am probably lookingfor, but who doesn't have anobvious advertisement inplace?

Almost more to the point, isthere anyone with genuineprofessional skills who islooking for a real bundle ofwork for a good business start?

All the Estepona computerdealers tell me they get a lot ofphone calls asking for thesame kind of guy as I'mlooking for. But they don'tknow of any tradesman ortradeswoman who iscompetent to help.

It actually seems a businessopportunity in a million for theright guys!

I hear it's being said thatcomputers might be here tostay!

Morning!I´m not sure whether you areaware of this group or not, you´ll find them onFacebook as well as the newwebsite which is being set upright now. They are SOSVolunteers Andalucia.

I think you know a largegroup of people who I don´thave contact information for,who I think would want tohelp out with OUR disaster, ifthey are not already doing so.Over the course of theweekend, I have heard ofhundreds of people whowant to help but don´t knowwhat to do. This is the groupto join to ensure thateveryone is given the correctinformation to be able to doas much or as little as theywant.

I spent all day on Saturdaywith the volunteers up atBarranco Blanco, takingthem food and water, collecting further financialand physical donations fromother volunteers, shoppingfor items the workersdesperately needed to ensurethe fires did not reignite andthen did a four hour shift inthe evening "on the frontline" myself. When you seethe utter devastation just theother side of "our" mountainyou realise how incrediblylucky we were to beuntouched. It so could havebeen different, just a changein the direction of wind andwe would have been the oneswith our houses burnt to theground, our only possessionsthe clothes we were standingin, with injured pets (if we

were fortunate enough to beable to save them) andwondering how on earth weare going to go on.

Please can you pass on theinformation to everyone inthis area so if anyone wantsto help, they can. Some of theeasier things we can do tomake a big difference aredetailed on the pages, forexample, Iceland arecollecting donations ofclothes, non-perishablefood, animal food or simplywater. There are volunteerswho will collect items inlandand take them to Fuengirolafor you to make it even easierif need be!

Many thanks and sorry topester you!

What a horrendous weekendwe have all had with the fires, and I hope my favouritenewspaper, The News, willcover it properly as everyonewill be interested. There seems to be somerumours going around, noneof them confirmed of course,as to what started the fire. Ihave heard that it wassomeone who didn’t extinguishhis BBQ properly, someone setlight to his land because thelocal town hall wouldn’t give

him permission to build andanother that three men hadbeen arrested for arson. Whoknows what the truth is yet butwhat I would like to say is ahuge “thank you” to all thefirefighters, on the ground andairborne, and all the volunteerswho turned out all over thearea to help with everything.Editor says: See page 13 for aspecial report but I would alsolike to thank everybody whohelped. Fire is a terrifying thingso well done to all of you.

With the recent death of Neil Armstrong there has been aresurgence in interest about the Apollo Moon landings, and Ican’t believe that some idiots are still saying that they don’tbelieve that the astronauts landed on the Moon!

McLaren's Jenson Button has criticised team mate Lewis Hamilton for revealingconfidential car data on Twitter before the Belgian Grand Prix in a gaffe that may havehelped Formula One rivals." We work so hard to improve the car and keep things likethat secret and private. I didn't want to see it on Twitter," said Button, whose relationshipwith Hamilton has hitherto been unusually harmonious for title rivals."I think it's donenow. I don't think it's for me to be angry with Lewis. It's not a personal thing," he said.

Button survives mayhem at Spa Grand Prix

It was Button's first victoryat Spa and No. 14 of hiscareer. He led from start tofinish, oblivious to themayhem behind him."This is such a special

circuit, so to get a victoryhere from light to flag isvery special," Button said."It hasn't been an easy yearfor me. We're going to enjoythis for a little while longerbefore we head to Monzaand hopefully do thesame."Button triumphantly

zigzagged across the trackas he approached the finishline and then clapped hishands together incelebration. He then stoodon his McLaren and leanedhis head back as heclenched both fists."The car felt very good to

drive and I could controlthe degradation of the tyres. It's always easier to do thatwhen you're leading," saidButton, who climbed tosixth place overall. "It's a

massive long shot to winthe title, but today provesthat you can claw back 25points very quickly. There'sstill 63 points to make up,but anything's possible."Defending champion

Sebastian Vettel benefitedfrom the chaos to finishsecond and trim Alonso'slead to 24 points – puttingthe two-time championright back in contention."I was reasonably

confident because I knowanything can happen hereand you can overtake,"Vettel said.Kimi Raikkonen was

third, continuing theconsistent form he's shownall season long with histhird straight podium andsixth overall."My car was not the

nicest to drive the wholerace," Raikkonen said. "Iwas fighting to get the bestout of it and we managed toget some key points, so thatwas the main thing."

The early wreck, whichwas triggered by Lotusdriver Romain Grosjean, also took out Mexicandriver Sergio Perez, andGrosjean himself. Grosjeanhad gone for a small gap

and clipped Hamilton'sMcLaren. That sent bothcars spinning and led toGrosjean's Lotus flyingdangerously over FernandoAlonso's Ferrari, whichthen took out Perez's

Sauber. All four driversescaped unhurt, althoughGrosjean’s car narrowlymissed the Spaniard'shead."I'm fine and 100

(percent) already thinking

(about) Monza!" Alonsoposted later on his Twitterpage.Alonso, who started the

race with a 40-point leadover Red Bull's AustralianMark Webber, had hopedfor a record-equalling 24thsuccessive points finish butthat was shattered in acloud of carbon-fibre aftera matter of metres. His lead was cut to 24

points, with Vettel movingup to second overall.Webber dropped to third,32 points adrift of Alonso.

Once all the dust hadsettled Romain Grosjeanwas given a one-race banfor causing the first-cornercrash at the Belgian GrandPrix. The 26-year-old

Frenchman, who has beeninvolved in seven first-lapcrashes in 12 races thisseason, was also fined50,000 euros (£40,000).

Jenson Button coasted to his second victory of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday with Formula Onechampionship leader Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton forced out after a spectacular crash at the start.

After the great awayperformance againstPanathinaikos in midweekwhich sealed Malaga'sChampions League spot,Malaga travelled toZaragoza looking for leaguepoints to maintain theirgood start. Malaga's playerswore t-shirts at the start ofthe game with the names ofall the towns that wereaffected by the recent fires.

On a pitch thatresembled a park playingfield, Malaga again startedwell with their goodpossession football.Zaragoza eventually cameinto the game, withRomeric testing Caballerofrom long range and thenagain the same player wasset up brilliantly by Pinteron 18 minutes only to sidefoot the ball high and widefrom just 12 yards. Joaquin

and Eliseu were at theheart of everything forMalaga who remainedfairly comfortable. Malaga's new

signing Saviola cameon after half time forhis debut and gaveMalaga more optionsup front. On 57minutes Malaga wentahead, an Eliseucorner was met byCamacho at the farpost who headed inwell. With Malagacontinuing to controlthings an Eliseu shoton 69 minutes was parriedto Saviola who nearlyscored from a tight angle.Zaragoza huffed and puffedbut Malaga held on for thethree points.

France manager DidierDeschamps has indicatedthat goalkeeper Hugo Llorisis unhappy with commentsmade by new club bossAndre Villas-Boas, just fourdays after his move to WhiteHart Lane. Lloris left Lyon forTottenham in an £8millionmove on Friday, with theclear intention of taking theNo 1 shirt from Brad Friedel. With Friedel now 41, it

appeared Lloris, 16 years hisjunior, had been brought inwith the idea of replacing theveteran American. But Friedel responded to

his arrival by producing oneof the performances of hiscareer against Norwich onSaturday. That prompted Villas-

Boas to say that Lloris wouldhave a fight on his hands towin a starting spot. That doesnot appear to have gonedown too well with Lloris, who linked up with thenational team on Monday.
