In September 2017, the Association forPhysical Education (afPE) and 1st4sportQualifications will release replacementversions of the following regulatedqualifications:

• 1st4sport Level 2 Certificate inSupporting Learning in PhysicalEducation and School Sport.

• 1st4sport Level 3 Certificate inSupporting the Delivery of PhysicalEducation and School Sport.

This document will explain in detail theaspects and limitations of each hugelysuccessful qualification, as well as thesupporting resources and qualificationsavailable to recognised centresinterested in providing a bespoke or‘complete solution’ for their physicaleducation and school sport learners.Recognised centres will be able tobegin the approval process for theabove qualifications on August 1, 2017.Approved recognised centres will beable to deliver the new qualificationsfrom September 1, 2017.

This document will also discuss thescheduled changes to the hugelypopular 1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diplomain Supporting the Delivery of PhysicalEducation and School Sport.

1st4sport Level 2 CertificateSupporting Learning in PhysicalEducation and School Sport

Objective: Theobjective of thisqualification is tointroduce thelearner to anumber of roles inproviding supportfor the delivery ofPhysical Educationand School Sport

(PESS) under the supervision of a morequalified deliverer. This will suit a coachor activity deliverer looking to providesupport for the delivery of curriculum-led PESS activities.

Prerequisites: Learners must be at least16 years of age, be able tocommunicate in English and have theiridentify appropriately confirmed. Aprevious coaching qualification is not apre-requisite.

Assessment Specification: Learners arerequired to complete a series of writtentasks or provide alternative evidence todemonstrate this understanding.Learners must also plan, deliver andreview a series of PESS activity sessions(minimum of four) under thesupervision of a more qualifieddeliverer, with two sessions observedby a qualified Assessor.

Cost per learner: The cost will remainunchanged at £70 (+VAT) perregistered learner.

Workforce requirements: Theworkforce requirements remainunchanged from the originalqualification.

Complementary offers: Feedback fromrecognised centres has confirmed the1st4sport Level 2 Award in Multi-SkillsDevelopment in Sport helps furtherreinforce youth physical developmentmodels, allowing physical educationdeliverers to make greater impact whendeveloping fundamental movement andsport-specific skills in youngparticipants. Recognised centres mayalso wish to further upskill their learnersby delivering the 1st4sport Level 3Award in Supporting the Delivery ofDance in Physical Education and SchoolSport. Conversations with recognisedcentres suggest that even the most

experienced physical education andSchool Sport practitioner may lack in-depth knowledge of compulsory,curriculum-led dance activities.

1st4sport Level 3 Certificate inSupporting the Delivery ofPhysical Education and SchoolSport

Objective: Thisqualification is moresuited to theindividual who wishesto lead the deliveryof physical educationand school activitieswith the support of aqualified teacher. Thequalification willallow the learner toact as a teaching assistant in thecontext of physical education. Thequalification will develop the learner’sknowledge and skills in order to be ableto independently lead the delivery ofPE and sport programmes in a schoolsport environment.

Prerequisites: The learner must beappropriately identified, at least 17years of age and must be able todemonstrate experience of workingwithin a classroom OR be in possessionof a relevant Level 2 Physical Educationor sport-related qualification. This is toensure the learner has the necessaryunderstanding of the subject prior tothe commencement of the course.

Assessment Specification: The learneris required to prepare for, lead andreview a physical education and schoolsport activity programme (a minimumof six sessions), documenting plans,delivery and evaluations within thelearner portfolio (or equivalentdocument). Each must be witnessed be

a suitable individual, such as a memberof the teaching staff. A minimum of twoof these or other planned sessions mustbe observed by a qualified Assessor.The two observed sessions do not haveto include the same group of pupils.

Cost per learner: The cost will remainat £80 (+VAT) per learner

Workforce requirements: These remainunmoved, and are the same across theentire Physical Education and SchoolSport suite of qualifications.

Complementary offers: As with the1st4sport Level 2 Certificate inSupporting Learning in PhysicalEducation and School Sport and the1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diploma inSupporting the Delivery of PhysicalEducation and School Sport, thefollowing qualifications will allow yourlearners to become more employableand deployable:

• 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Multi-SkillsDevelopment in Sport.

• 1st4sport Level 3 Award in Supportingthe Delivery of Dance in PhysicalEducation and School Sport.

• a Level 2 sport-specific coachingqualification.

1st4sport Level 3 NVQ Diplomain Supporting the Delivery ofPhysical Education and SchoolSport

in the Supporting Teaching andLearning in Physical Education andSchool Sport apprenticeship, as well asthe assessment requirements within theSkills Active QCF EvidenceRequirements and AssessmentGuidance document. Therefore, thedelivery and assessment of thisqualification can remain unchanged.

However, based on recognised centrefeedback, the pre-standardisedassessment will be updated to moreefficiently embed the final four units.This includes the following changes:

• Incorporating assessment relevant tomentoring into Tasks 3, 4 and 6.

• Embedding Gifted and Talented intothe process of planning, deliveringand reviewing Physical Education andSchool Sport programmes.

• Merging Task 9 and Task 10, therebyallowing learners to research, plan,deliver and evaluate a communityevent in one, flowing task, therebyminimising duplication.

As well as this, 1st4sport Qualificationshas created a mapping document tosupport the recording of evidencegenerated in the workplace and in therequired community settings. Learnersare able to respond to the assessmentrequirements by using the LearnerPortfolio, the Mapping Document, or acombination of both: all of which canbe recorded in the durable assessmentbinder.
