Showcase PresenterHistoSonicsChristine Gibbons

HistoSonics is a medical device company that is developing a non-invasive, image guided robotic tissue ablation technology, called , that is expected to replace traditional surgical and minimally invasive methods. The first application of the technology will be treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition affecting 2M US patients, 4M worldwide. With 375,000 interventional procedures in the US alone, the potential global market exceeds $500M.

HistoSonics’ Vortx RxTM, the histrotripsy system developed for BPH

treatment integrates 3D surgical planning, precise robotic control, and real-time ultrasound imaging of the non-invasive procedure, which can be performed in an outpatient setting and is expected to greatly improve long-term outcomes.

Company founders and the co-inventors of histotripsy are Charles Cain, Brian Fowlkes, Tim Hall, Zhen Xu, and urologist Dr. William Roberts, all from the University of Michigan. The management team also now includes Tom Davison as Chairman and CEO (former CEO of Sontra, Endius, and Ultracision) and Jim Bertolina as VP of R&D and CTO (formerly with Xoran),

Gibbons’ involvement began with her work as “executive-in-residence” at Venture Investors in Ann Arbor. That program was sponsored, in part, by the Michigan Venture Capital Association using money from the state’s 21st Century Jobs Fund. It was Gibbons’ job to take a year and look for a venture-worthy deal for the fund to invest in, then join the firm as an executive.

An $11 million Series A funding round came in January 2009 led by Venture Investors, based in Ann Arbor, MI and Madison, WI. Other investors included Fletcher Spaght Ventures, Hatteras Venture Part-ners, Early Stage Partners, and TGap Ventures. A Series B round of $12-$15M is planned for 2013 to support completion of clinical trials, pre-market approval (PMA) submission, and outside US (OUS) market launch. Keith Brophy at Ideomed

Doug Neal, Executive Director, U-M Center for Entrepreneurship;

Co-Founder and eLab Director

James Sanders II, VP of Digitalat Hart Associates

Moderator Dick Beedon, Founder, CEO

at Amplifinity

What are investors looking for?Speed, time to market is critical in entrepreneurship, especially on the West Coast. Investors want in quickly, out quickly.

What’s changed?There is a revolution in the amount of data available, but the ques-tion is, what to do with it all? The convergence now of old and new has sparked a revolution in marketing -- methods, sources, the sheer amount.

What’s the next big thing?Real-world consumers will increasingly be paid to give input on brand/product; the ton of apps now is just the beginning; there will be increased embracing of social media in business strategies and greater reliance on the personal, trusted, close circle of friends for decision making. The new ability to see faster means we must decide faster.

What are the concerns?Regulation. Need relief for some to prosper; varies from industry to industry; pharma and devices rough; FDA is stifling US innovation.

Summation?Things are upsidedown now, but there is LOTS of opportunity!
