The sponsorship raised will be used to further develop our SERVENazareth programme.

SERVE Nazareth creates opportunities for individuals and groups to work alongside local people in Jesus’ hometown, supporting Christian ministries in these troubled times in the Middle East.

SERVE participants learn about other cultures and Christian expressions of faith, breaking down barriers built up by culture and the media. The local community is enriched and encouraged through this spirit of giving to serve others, while SERVE participants grow in Christ, leaving Nazareth with new vision, passion and vitality to serve the Lord wherever their path leads them.

‘The SERVENazareth participants are a blessing to

everyone they meet, their work in the hospital is

very significant for fulfilling our call and helping us

to face many challenges.’ Roni Khreish, Social worker

‘I have deep appreciation and respect for the way people live in hope in spite of

uncertainties and conflict that lie just below the surface.’

Lois, SERVEand Jesus Trail 2014

‘When I got to Israel I had this amazing feeling I was doing something great for God…. then, I came to realize that the

complete opposite was happening. God was ministering to me. He used

everyone around me to show His love.’ Adri, SERVE2013

‘The SERVE people not only encourage the patients, but are an encouragement

to me as well’ Nihay Jubran,

Occupational Therapist

‘I came here hoping that God would open my heart to be His hands and His feet, and that is exactly what He did.’

Rachel, SERVE2012

‘God really surpassed all of my expectations. Through serving I grew so

much in faith and character.’ Jonathan, SERVE2014

Walk the Jesus Trail

Can you walk 16 km (10 miles) in one day? The best way to find this out is to pack a day pack and head to a hiking area near where you live. Choose an easy to intermediate trail of about 10 miles and see how you feel as you walk. You may wish to build up to 10 miles over time, by starting with shorter walks.

Do you have any joint problems that could prevent you from walking for four days in a row? Walking and carrying weight can be hard on joints. If you have arthritis, or have had any surgery on your knee, hip or ankle joints, consult your GP before walking the trail.

Do you have any other ailments that could affect your ability to walk long distances? For example, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, back pain, and many other ailments could prove painful and dangerous on a distance hiking trail. When in doubt, schedule a check up with your GP.

Will I have to carry all my own belongings? Support vehicles will transport your luggage to that night’s accommodation so all you will need to carry each day is sufficient essential accessories and water for that day.

What will the weather be like?

The weather in November will be quite unpredictable, temperatures may be as high as the low to mid 20’s ºC or it may be quite cool during the day and chilly at night with rain. We suggest you carry thin but additional layers with a rain coat handy.

Do I need any specialist equipment?

Other than footwear and clothing for the variance in weather the only recommended equipment would be a walking pole, or two.

Where will we sleep?

Accommodation will be provided along the way (on a shared basis) in small hotels and B&B’s. Single rooms are available at an additional £200 / $320 / 1200 NIS but please note that even by paying this supplementary charge single rooms cannot be guaranteed for every night but will be provided wherever possible.

Walk the Jesus Trail 2015 Your Questions Answered

What should I wear?

The most important thing to remember is to bring comfortable, worn-in footwear We recommend sturdy hiking shoes or boots as the trail involves some sections of rough terrain, although most is on dirt 4×4 tracks. We do not recommend wearing sandals or lightweight walking shoes. Modest clothing is also recommended for passing through villages and entering holy sites, as many churches do not allow visitors in if they are wearing shorts. It’s a good idea to layer clothing for changing weather. During the rainy season bring rain gear. Don’t forget sunscreen and sun -protective clothes as these may also be useful

What about insurance and visas?

You will need to take out your own travel insurance covering health, accident, loss and repatriation. There is no requirement for a Visa to travel to and from Israel for UK, US or Canadian citizens but you will need to check the requirements for your own country. A website we use to check is: http://www.learn4good.com/travel/isrl_visa.htm#req.

Will I need any vaccinations? Whilst there are no recommended vaccinations for travelling to Israel, it is recommended that you consult with your General Practitioner or Practice Nurse 6 -8 weeks in advance of travel. They will assess your particular health risks before recommending any vaccines and /or medication.

Is there anything else I should take:

Don’t forget to pack:

• Comfortable, sturdy, broken -in footwear (waterproof hiking shoes are the best option)

• Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm

• A backpack with enough space to carry 2 -3 litres of water per person

• Mini First Aid kit: band aids, blister care, pain reliever such as ibuprofen or paracetamol

• At least one shirt with sleeves and one pair of hiking pants that cover the knees (for entering religious sites)

• Waterproof jacket or poncho • Flip flops or other comfortable sandals to

wear in the evenings. (Trust us, you’ll want to get out of your walking shoes!)

• Walking pole(s) • Electrolyte sports drink powder, such as

Gatorade • Swimsuit • Journal, pencil/pen • Pocket -sized Bible • Camera (with extra batteries or charger)
