Happy New Year!

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis has declared 2021 as the Year of St. Joseph. The year started December 8, 2020 and will continue through December 8, 2021. St. Joseph, husband of Mary the Mother of Jesus, was an out-standing example of accepting without question, the task of raising this tiny baby who would save the world. What wonderful faith Joseph had! As health mandates continue to be enforced that do not allow courts to meet or gather to work and celebrate accomplishments, let us be more like the gentle humble servant St. Jo-seph. May we be more willing to accept each member as a gift for the court. Let us be more willing to accept

the burdens of another member. Can we show sisterly love for all God’s people especially those who are not like us in celebrating faith or political convictions or choice of lifestyle? Are we truly willing to follow the example of St. Joseph with humility and ac-ceptance of all God’s people?

Life is filled with changes and accepting new challenges. This past year has proven to be full of changes and challenges! We have become proficient using new technology not available even ten years ago. Joining faith-filled members praying together on Face-book is one of the many positive happenings that has been a product of the pandemic. Families have been given the gift of not be-ing so busy. Family dinners with the whole family sharing food together are quite regular now. Games not used much in the past years have become great ways to enjoy family members. They are just some of the many positive changes over the past year. May this time of gathering as family not be lost when the virus is finally under control. This is the year for attending State Conventions to celebrate accomplishments, pray together and renew friendships. The pandemic has changed so much in our lives. We social dis-tance, wear a mask, constantly wash out hands, willingly have our temperature taken and agree to test for the virus that has made life so difficult for so many people. Missing the joyful gathering of Catholic women who share their lives, burdens and heart breaks, good times and difficult times is difficult to understand and accept. State Conventions may not be exactly as we remember from years past. Limiting the number of attendees, limiting the time for a convention from a busy weekend to a day or two, having a virtual convention, using absentee ballots for the first time and accepting a different plan while conducting meetings are just a few of the changes experienced this year. Good leaders are still needed to make our order the best it can be. New ideas are still need-ed to entice new members to join. Joining together in prayer for one another is still needed. The Catholic Daughters are a power-house of prayer! Please consider accepting the call to become an officer in your court. Please consider being a District Deputy or Circle of Love Chairman. Every member has a special gift to share. Share that gift by being an officer in the local court, state court or on the state board. You will be working with some of the best women in this world. They are dedicated, hard working and joy-ful. Share their dedication and joy! A court is just waiting for your “yes”. Be the hands and feet of Jesus here on earth and then with Him in heaven for all eternity.

May God continue to bless you abundantly!

Prayer in Preparation for

The election of Officers

For

Catholic daughters of the Americas

Mary, Mother of Love, the first Catholic Daughter, we ask you to grant us the grace of openness to the Holy Spirit, dynamic fidelity to the charism of Unity and Charity, and untiring devotion in the service of the Catholic Daughters.

May this period of preparation for our State Election of Officers be for us a favorable time of humility, obedience and openness to God’s will for our Court. Make each member available and open to what the Spirit wishes to accomplish in our Court. Grant that each member have the ability to respond “YES” to God as He calls her to serve Him.

May, Mother of the Church and of the Catholic Daughters

Pray for Us.

St. Joseph Prayer Service (Set up a prayer table in the front of the room with a

statue of St. Joseph, a cross, and candle.)

Leader: Today, we celebrate the life of St. Joseph. His feast day is observed every year on March 19. St. Joseph was the foster father of Jesus and the spouse of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary. Although Sacred Scripture doesn’t tell us much about St. Joseph, we know that he lis-tened to what God told him in his dreams and that he protected and cared for Jesus and Mary. Reader 1: We know that Joseph was a humble carpenter and a hard-working man, for the skeptical Naza-rian’s ask of Jesus: Reader 2: “Is this not the carpenter’s son?” (Matthew 13:55) Reader 3: We know that Joseph was not a rich man for when he took Jesus to the temple to be circumcised and Mary to be purified, he offered a lesser sacrifice because he could not afford a lamb. Reader 4: When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and the offer the sacrifice of “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, “ in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. (Luke 2:22-24) Reader 5: We know that Joseph was a compassionate, caring man. When he discovered Mary was pregnant after they had been betrothed, he knew the child was not his, but was unaware that she was carrying the Son of God. He knew women accused of adultery could be stoned to death, so he decided to send her away quietly. He was too kind to see her shamed. But when an angel came to him in a dream, he did as the angel told him. Reader 6: Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was

betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spir-

it. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to

shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord

appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife

into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will

bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” All this

took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with

child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” When

Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.

He had no relations with her until she bore a son,* and he named him Jesus. (Matthew 1:18:25)

St Joseph prayer (cont.)

Reader 7: We know that Joseph loved Jesus. His main concern was for the safety of this child com-mended to him. Not only did he flee to Egypt to protect Jesus, but when it was safe to return, he settled the holy family in the obscure town of Nazareth out of fear of the child ’s life. When Jesus stayed in the Temple, we know that Joseph worried about him very much. Reader 8: When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.” (Luke 2:48) Leader: Join me in praying this ancient prayer to St. Joseph. Oh, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spir-itual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him close in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to re-turn the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for me. Amen.

Looking for changes in our bylaws?

Now is the time.

Our bylaws are a “living” document. As we grow we need to make changes, so do our bylaws. State Conventions will soon be here. This is a great opportunity to discuss bylaws and present the changes needed to keep our bylaws viable.

During your convention, set aside some time for suggestions and discussion on bylaw changes.

The National Committee on Bylaws receives and reviews all proposed changes to the Bylaws. The Bylaws may be amended at any Biennial National Conven-tion by a two-thirds vote of the National Court present, provided written notice has been submitted to the Local and State Courts three months prior to the Na-tional Convention.

Send a copy of the amendment and rationale proposed by the local court or state court. Approved amendments must be signed by the State Regent and State Secretary or by the Local Court Regent and Recording Secretary before presenting them to the committee.

The deadline for Bylaw amendments to the national bylaw chairman is January 15 of the convention year. The convention Bylaw chairman for the 2022 Na-tional Convention is Carolyn Malik. Carolyn’s address is P.O. Box 243, Shiner, Texas 77984.

After determining that you will need to host a Virtual State Convention due to Covid restrictions in your state, the following

guidelines should be used. Communication with your Courts and adherence to due dates will be crucial.

Your National Representative will attend your Virtual Convention. If she has a conflict with dates, another National Officer or

National Director will attend. If you have any questions in the planning stages, please contact your National Supervisor or Di-

rector.

Voting (These guidelines must be followed to ensure that voting is done correctly. All dates except date to turn in paper-

work to Nominating Committee Chairman may be adjusted if your virtual convention will be held in early – mid

April.)

State Courts will follow the same procedures the National Board followed when electing new National Officers, National

Directors, and the 2022 Nominating Committee. They are as follows:

The deadline for candidates to turn in paperwork to run for State Office to the State Nominating Committee is

Monday, February 1, 2021. Because voting will be done by mail and there needs to be enough time for

ballots to be mailed and returned, the Nominating Committee Chairman will send the slate of officers to

the State Regent by Monday, February 15, 2021. The Nominating Committee Chairman should also

mail all paperwork received from candidates to the State Regent.

The State Regent will send an email to all Court Regents, District Deputies and State Chairmen publishing the

Slate of State Officers and ask for nominations from the floor for State Officer and the 2023 Nominating

Committee. She will send the email to Court Regents by Thursday, February 18, 2021. She will in-

struct the Court Regents to announce the slate to her Court members and to inquire if anyone is interested

in running from the floor. The Court Regent is the only member who can nominate a candidate from her

Court for the Nominating Committee. She should email the name of the candidate, the name and number

of the Court, and the City to the State Regent.

Candidates who wish to run from the floor for State Office or Nominating Committee will have two weeks to

mail in their paperwork (as specified in the by-laws) to the State Regent. All paperwork to run for State

Officer or the Nominating Committee must be received by Monday, March 8, 2021.

All five of the State Officers will meet in person to verify candidate paperwork, create, and mail the ballots to

Court Regents. There will be two ballots, one for State Officers and one for the 2023 Nominating Com-

mittee. Names on Nominating Committee Ballots should be in alphabetical order. Ballots should be

printed on different colored paper for ease in counting. Half sheets of paper can be used. Ballots will be

mailed out by Monday, March 15, 2021.

The Court Regent is responsible for getting the ballots to the delegates in her court. The Court delegates must

be registered in order to vote. After voting, the delegate puts both ballots in an envelope and returns it to

their Court Regent. The Court Regent is to put all the ballots from her Court in one envelope and mail

them back to the State Regent. They must be postmarked by March 29, 2021.

The State Regent will receive mailed ballots. They are to remain sealed. She will bring all of the ballots with

her to the Convention and give them to the Election Committee Supervisor which is the National Supervi-

sor or Director. She is to bring all candidate paperwork that is received from the Nominating Committee

Chairman to the Convention as well.

Location for Virtual Conference

The State Officers and National Supervisors will meet in person to host the State Virtual Convention.

The Location can be a hotel, church, school, or home. The most important thing to consider in choosing the loca-

tion is if it will afford a secure, dedicated line for your internet. You cannot live stream a convention if you do

not have a secure line.

Committees for a Virtual Convention

Committees Necessary for a Virtual Convention.

Nominating Committee

The members of this committee were elected at the last State Convention and have already completed their responsibili-

ties. The National Supervisor or Director will have a Zoom Meeting or Conference call with the Nominating Com-

mittee at least one month prior to the Virtual Convention to make sure that protocols were followed. The Nominat-

ing Committee Chair should email the slate of officers that the committee agreed upon to all committee members.

Each member is to sign the slate agreeing that these were the names agreed upon and mail back to the committee

chair. The Nominating Committee Chair is to mail these to the State Regent.

Elections Committee

This Committee is a must. The Elections Committee will consist of three to five members. Their responsibility is to

count the votes. They should be chosen from Past State Regents, Present and Past District Deputies, State Chair-

men, and local Court Regents who live in the area where the convention is being held. The National Supervisor or

Director in attendance will be the supervisor of this committee. The Elections Committee will open the envelopes

and insure there are not more ballots than delegates allotted to the Court being tallied. They will count and tally

legal votes. The Elections Committee will present a list of the newly elected State Officers and Nominating Com-

mittee Members to the State Regent.

Bylaws/Resolutions Committee

Bylaws cannot be discussed on Zoom, Google Meet, etc. Only members have access to the bylaws, and they are not

published on the National Website because they are private. The State Officers will review the proposed by-laws

and resolutions decide whether to approve them for sending on to National or not.

Committee to Approve Minutes

Same duties as in-person convention.

Standing Rules Committee

State Officers should review and revise prior to Virtual Convention.

Committees unnecessary for a Virtual Convention.

Credentials Committee

Hospitality Committee

National Representative Meeting with State Officers

Time should be set aside for the National Supervisor or Director to meet with State Officers to confirm the agenda the evening

before the virtual conference. A brief run through of the day should be done. State Regents will still need to use a script.

Technology Assistant

You may want to consider having a designated officer or member to troubleshoot technology issues that come up the day/

days of the convention. This person could also be responsible for checking the chat box on Zoom, Google Meet, etc. for

questions and comments. Members watching from home should be have the opportunity to be recognized by the State

Regent, They should state their name, spell their name, give their Court name, Court number, and city then ask a question or

participate in a discussion as they would at an in-person convention.

Covering the Cost of Virtual Convention

The State Board should take the cost of all expenses, including but not limited to online meeting fees, hotel cost, speakers, sup-

plies, meals, etc. to determine the cost of registration. You can register delegates, alternates, and guest but charge a registra-

tion fee for all attending or you could charge one fee per Local Court.

Sending Documents to the National Office

When sending documents from your court to the National Office, please follow-up with an email or phone call to be certain the document has arrived. A phone call is the very

best option to check it out.

Receiving Group Emails Group emails are many times sent to get a message out quickly with exact wording. If a reply

is expected or to acknowledge that you received the group message, please use only the Reply not the Reply All. Reply All sends the message to every email listed in the group

mailing. This causes mailboxes to fill up unnecessarily.

Misericordia Please note Misericordia is no longer on our list of charities and projects. Any checks

received for Misericordia at the National Office will be applied to another charity.

Updating the Store The Store at the National Office has been so helpful in supplying goods to courts. Ordering new court robes is so much easier. Local, state, JCDA and chaplain/spiritual advisor pins, jewelry, Catholic Daughter items with our logo, recruitment tools and supplies for all courts can be ordered with a click on the computer. Gift items are also available as long as supplies last. Do you have any suggestions on items that could be added to the store inventory? Please send suggestions to any National Board member. This is our store and we want it to be useful and include items of interest to our members.

Financial Review The semi-annual Financial Review must be conducted after March 31st by a committee of 3 members. The District Deputy/State Representative must be present for at least one of the twice yearly financial reviews. All court officers must be present to answer any questions by the Financial Review Committee. The review must be signed by the three members plus the district deputy/state representative. The district deputy/state representative signs only when she is present for the financial review. Included in this mailing is the proper form that is used.

2020 what a year! 2021 have no fear! We’ve been through it all, haven’t we! Everyone has been “locked down” since March of 2020. Some of us feel like we have been “locked in”.

Your court newsletter is a great way to keep in touch with the members of your court. Many courts had virtual meetings but not all members are able to participate in that aspect of social media—we miss the face-to-face meetings of the past. Getting a newsletter from your court helps to keep everyone Please help your members feel connected by writing a newsletter from your court. It’s a great way to make members who have been sheltered in place still feel like a part of your court. If you have never written a newsletter be-fore, it doesn’t matter, and there’s no time like the present to start. Write it up like you are writing a per-sonal friend, telling them everything that is going on in your life—kind of like a Christmas letter! It’s not your life, it is the life of the court.

For those of you who already write a newsletter, just a gentle reminder of the requirements that will need to be followed if you want to enter your court newsletter in the national newsletter contest. These require-ments were listed in the September 2020 Quarterly Newsletter and are on the National Website. Go to the website at catholicdaughters.org, then click on the “member resources” tab, then click on “forms”, then click on “contests”, then click on “national newsletter contest information—2021”. The Spanish version is still in the 2020 format. The 2021 forms and guidelines are in the process of being translated into Spanish for us now. Please read the requirements very carefully and follow the guidelines. All the information must be included on the entries. Everything is on the website from deadlines and requirements to sugges-tions, a cover sheet and scoring sheets. Your local court and state court will set their own deadlines. The deadline to the National Newsletter Chairman Barb Jensen must be postmarked on or before April 1, 2021. Newsletters will not be accepted for judging after the deadline. All entries must be mailed to Barb Jensen, 1621 Memorial Drive, Broken Bow NE 68822. If you have any questions email her at [email protected]. Newsletters are one of the most important tools for your court!

NATIONAL CDA EDUCATION AND SCHOLARSHIP CONTESTS FOR 2021 By National Education Chairman, Darlene Moritz

As I write this I am looking back on the year of 2020. We would all say that we might have learned a lot! And 2021 looks like we will learn more. Learning and education are vital to all of us. It doesn’t mean you have to be in school every day to learn something. Lord knows, I get educated every day on something; and every year the Catholic Daughters offer an Education Contest to students AND adult CDA members. It is a great way to share what you think and what you have learned. There are two themes again to choose from for this 2021-year contest; “Let All You do be Done with Love”1 Cor. 16-14 and “Show Love to One An-other”. Your court Regent has received the material but if your court has been held up by COVID, you can find the rules on the National CDA Website at www.catholicdaughters.org. On the home page click on ‘member resources’ close to the top of the page and scroll down to ‘Contests’. You will find the Education Contest-2021 information there. Give your entry to the local court education chair. The deadlines are listed as March 1st to have the local entries to your State Education Chairman. Then by April 1, 2021 (postmarked before April 1) your state chair will send the state winners to the National Chairman. There are also three (3) Fr. Bachmann Graduate Scholarships for undergraduates and if you or you know of someone who might be eligible for this scholarship, please encourage them to find the application and rules again on the National CDA Website at www.catholicdaughters.org and on the home page, scroll down to the Circle of Love on Education. The Fr. Bachmann Scholarship application is listed there when you click on ‘education’. Be sure to follow all the rules set by National and I look so forward to the post office bringing all the win-ning state entries by April 1, 2021. God Bless and Happy Sharing!

Does your local court or State court have a website? As we all know, internet communication is not going

away and many younger, busy women will “surf the net” rather than spend time on the phone or reading

newspapers. Please consider a website for your court if you have not already. Websites can be great sources

of information if maintained. With the pandemic still among us, websites are a good way to keep members

informed especially when in person meetings may be somewhat limited.

Websites should inform potential members of our service and spiritual events and hopefully entice them

to learn more about CDA. A State website can be linked to National and vice versa. A local site can be linked

to the State website and maybe the parish where the court is based. All these connections help to convey

CDA’s mission to potential members and to our current members.

Already have a website? That’s great. Remember to keep it as up to date as possible. Don’t have a web-

site? Give it consideration and ask computer savvy members or maybe your parish IT person to help.

The National Website contest wants to recognize courts with outstanding websites and encourage courts

to create them. Whether your site is brand new or well established please submit to our contest. There are

two separate divisions.

Application forms are on the National Website along with judging criteria and detailed instructions.

Go to the National Website (www.catholicdaughters.org), look under Member Resources tab, click on forms,

then scroll down to the contest section and click on Website Contest 2021.

Please READ INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY and FILL OUT FORM COMPLETELY. Note the required elements and

judging categories and of course the DEADLINES to submit.

Local, campus and JCDA should submit to State chairman by March 1, 2021. First place entries only are sent

to National by April 1, 2021.

State and territorial courts submit directly to the National Chairman by April 1, 2021.

I hope many of you will participate. Prizes will be awarded at the 2021 State Officer Conference. Thank you

and good luck to all.

We have been tasked with finding alternate ways to fellowship and communicate. Regardless, as to what is taking place in the world today, we as Catholic Daughters always find a way to live up to our motto, Unity and Charity.

In the pass especially during the holidays, we felt the need to visit the food kitchen to help prepare and serve food or just to sing along with those in the room. This past season, things were done a lit-tle differently. As Catholic Daughters we are not allowed to be physically present. However, we were able to assist financially and collect items, such as non-perishable food and clothing. More than ever, our help is needed in the community.

A huge salute to all leaders and members for your continuous contributions and support in the various communities and to CDA.

But now faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. -

1 Corinthians 13:13

Dr. Martin Luther King said: In order to change them we first must love them and they must

know they are loved. As the 117 Congress begins, we must show the love of Christ to our elect-

ed representatives and pray for them on a daily basis to know God’s Will and then have the

courage to act upon it for the good of our beloved America. Catholic Daughter women build up

their communities with support for food banks, retired religious, education contests, spiritual

and financial help for women in crisis pregnancies, financial help to end sex trafficking and much more. We support

the dignity of every human person and value the most precious gift of LIFE Our Nation is in great need of prayer

and Our Lady of America is interceding for us. Please pray to her. I am sure you will be hearing from me for Legisla-

tive Action Alerts. Please make sure to send the information to the courts in your state so that the information can

be acted upon in a timely manner. Lastly, it is God who is in control and it is in Him that we put all our trust. Good

News is the Supreme Court voted 6-3 to cease the selling of the dangerous chemical abortion cocktail known as

Mifeprex (formerly RU 486) through the mail. Important for women in crisis pregnancies to know that after they

have swallowed the first pill called mifepristone, they can still save their baby by adding progesterone. According to

abortion Pill Rescue there have been successful reversals when treatment was started within 72 hours of taking the

first abortion pill. There is a 24 hour , nurse-staffed hotline that you can call 1-877-558-0330. The website is:

https://www.abortionpillreversal.com More good news is a brand new social media website that supports our

Catholic values. It is called Triumph of LIFE and the website is triumphforlife.org

God bless you and God bless the United States of America.
