The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley Online Edition

plot synopsis MRS. CARTERO, the mail delivery person,

holds up a portrait of the LAMBCHOP family (Meet The Lambchops). With the help of the ENSEMBLE, Mrs. Cartero introduces MR. LAMBCHOP, MRS. LAMBCHOP, little brother ARTHUR, and STANLEY.

Stanley, Arthur, and friends are having a sleepover when Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop declare it’s bedtime. Stanley’s friends CALEB and JACKSON are too excited to sleep. When Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop leave, COUSIN SOPHIE asks Arthur what he would wish if he could wish on a falling star. One by one the friends answer Sophie’s question. Stanley wants to have an adventure like his favorite characters from stories (I Wish I Were – Part 1). Arthur interrupts him by declaring that “wizards aren’t real,” but that doesn’t stop the kids from dreaming (I Wish I Were – Part 2). Right before everyone falls asleep, Stanley wishes to travel the planet and do amazing things. Arthur thinks Stanley’s wish will come true.

Suddenly, Stanley hears a voice. He turns on his fashlight and discovers that the BULLETIN BOARD above his bed has come alive to grant his wish. Stanley goes back to sleep and the Bulletin Board works its magic (Stanley’s Wish).

Everyone wakes up at a loud noise from Stanley’s room. The Bulletin Board has fallen on Stanley, and JACOB is the frst to notice that Stanley is fat! Mrs. Lambchop takes Stanley to visit DOCTOR DAN and NURSE BETTY, but the visit is not helpful.

Weeks go by and Stanley is still fat. Arthur and Stanley are waiting for the bus and three

COOL KIDS (KING COOL, COOL CHUCK, and COOL CALLIE) tie a string to Stanley on a windy day and fy him like a kite. When the bus comes the Cool Kids invite Arthur to go with them, and he does… leaving Stanley behind.

Stanley is stuck in a tree (In A Tree) and regretting his wish when Mrs. Cartero happens by and orders him to climb down. He explains his original wish to her. When she gives Stanley his mail, Mrs. Cartero has an idea: Stanley should travel through the mail (Travelin’ Through The Mail)!

Stanley informs the Lambchop family of his new plans and begins his adventure. In Paris, he visits the Louvre Museum and sees the MONA LISA and NAPOLEON. As museum curator O. JAY D’ART does his rounds, he discovers the unthinkable – a painting has been stolen right out of the museum! Stanley promises to help Mona Lisa and Napoleon recover their missing friend. Stanley disguises himself as a painting and calls for the guards when the SNEAK THIEF reappears. A chase ensues, and fnally Stanley captures the Sneak Thief, who is taken by the GENDARME. O. Jay D’art thanks Stanley and delivers a letter to him from Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop (Mom And Dad’s Letter). They miss him very much, and Stanley decides to go home.

Mrs. Cartero hands the Lambchops a special delivery – it’s Stanley, and he’s not fat anymore! Stanley had fun on his adventures but missed his family. The Lambchops exit as Mrs. Cartero holds up their family photo again, encouraging the audience to make a wish on a star (Epilogue).

STANLEY Stars are where Luke Skywalker uses the force to blast Death Stars out of the sky!

JACKSON And then, Harry Potter shows up and casts a spell! Obliviate!

MRS. LAMBCHOP Lightsabers and wands away for the night. There’s plenty of time to save the world tomorrow—

MR. LAMBCHOP And even Luke and Harry need their rest.

MRS. LAMBCHOP Good night, kids.

ARTHUR Mom? Will you leave the nightlight on?

MRS. LAMBCHOP We’ll leave the nightlight on. Now get some sleep.

COUSIN SOPHIE Psst. Arthur. You asleep?

ARTHUR You’re cool, Stanley.

(yawns) And I’m pretty sleepy...

STANLEY We should all get some sleep.

ARTHUR Night, Stanley.

STANLEY Night.

(STANLEY retrieves a flashlight and turns it on as the lights turn out. A voice [the BULLETIN BOARD] is heard.)

BULLETIN BOARD (creepy)

STANLEY Who’s talking?

BULLETIN BOARD Psst. Check out the bulletin board.

STANLEY I did.

BULLETIN BOARD And do you want that wish to come true, no matter what happens?

STANLEY Yes?

BULLETIN BOARD Then let’s review! You wanna travel the planet doing amazing things the world’s never seen before.

BULLETIN BOARD Totally possible! Now, how best to do it? Magic carpet? Too obvious. Nose that grows when he lies? That’s just creepy. Oh, I’ve got it. Yeah... this is gonna be flat out fun.

ARTHUR Like the world... before Columbus.


MRS. LAMBCHOP Children, go downstairs. Mr. Lambchop will call your parents.

(The KIDS and MR. LAMBCHOP exit leaving MRS. LAMBCHOP and STANLEY alone.)

STANLEY What am I going to do?

MRS. LAMBCHOP We’re going to call Doctor Dan.

STANLEY No! He’s gonna give me a shot!

MRS. LAMBCHOP We don’t know that, Stanley. Come on, let’s go.

DOCTOR DAN It means... he’s flat.

MRS. LAMBCHOP Of course he’s flat you nincompoop! That’s why we’re here!

NURSE BETTY Stanley, how do you feel?

STANLEY I feel fine.

DOCTOR DAN You heard him, he feels fine. Good day Mrs. Hamhock.

MRS. LAMBCHOP It’s Lambchop! Come on Stanley! Let’s get out of here.

SCENE 5: ARTHUR’S MONOLOGUE

ARTHUR So a couple of weeks have passed and Stanley’s still flat. One day, we were waiting for the bus, and the cool kids were like—

KING COOL Whoah, Stanley, and lil’ kid bro Stanley, it’s like totally windy—

ARTHUR And me and Stanley were like, “Yeah, it’s windy...” And then the cool kids were like—

COOL CHUCK Yo, ’lil kid bro Stanley, dude, I got an idea.

COOL CALLIE Totally fly.

ARTHUR So they held Stanley down, tied a string to his shirt, then one of the cool kids ran while holding the string, and Stanley started flying! Like a kite!

COOL CALLIE Check it out!

COOL CHUCK He’s like, way up there, dude.

KING COOL Make him dive!

ARTHUR But then things took a tragic turn.

KING COOL Yo! Freaks! The bus!

COOL CALLIE We’re outta here.

ARTHUR They let go of Stanley’s string and got on the bus.

NAPOLEON Of course we can talk. We’re paintings, not mimes.

MONA LISA You have to help us! The greatest paintings of the world are being stolen by the Sneak Thief!

NAPOLEON I know I’m next! You must help us.

STANLEY Wait. Why is there an empty frame?

NAPOLEON The Sneak Thief has stolen our dear friend Bathsheba at her bath.

MONA LISA And I am very concerned. You see... she wasn’t wearing any clothes... because she was... taking a bath.

NAPOLEON What if she catches a cold? You must help us!

STANLEY Hmm... well I am flat... What if I pretended to be the missing painting, and then when the Sneak Thief arrives I can jump down and capture him!

MONA LISA That’s a great idea! But you do not look like a painting worthy of The Louvre. Quick! In the closet is a costume – put it on.


(STANLEY crosses out of frame and puts a yarn wig with pigtails and a blouse. O. JAY D’ART appears onscreen. The PAINTINGS freeze.)

O. JAY D’ART Bonjour? Hallo? Curious.

(O. JAY D’ART exits.)

MONA LISA That was close. Are you ready kid?

STANLEY (off screen)

I’m not wearing this.

NAPOLEON I’ll bet you look great! Come on, let’s see.

(STANLEY enters wearing the yarn wig and blouse.)

STANLEY I look silly. Don’t you have any cool costumes, like Baby Yoda?

MONA LISA Darling, this is the Louvre, the greatest museum in the world.

STANLEY No Baby Yoda?

NAPOLEON Quick, get into the frame! I hear the Sneak Thief coming!

(STANLEY gets into the frame as the SNEAK THIEF appears onscreen.)

SNEAK THIEF Tonight will be my biggest heist ever! Now which one will I take? Napoleon? Or maybe Miss Mona Lisa?

(noticing STANLEY) What’s this? A new painting! Wow. That’s one strange lookin’ girl.

STANLEY Hey!


SNEAK THIEF Who said that?

(to self) You’re hearing things, stay calm. Eyes on the prize. Eyes on the prize. Yes! Napoleon, tonight you and me will trip the night fantastique!

STANLEY Gotcha!

SNEAK THIEF (freezes like a statue)

STANLEY The Sneak Thief is trying to steal Mona Lisa and Napoleon!

Stanley, Arthur, and friends are having a sleepover when Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop declare it’s bedtime. Stanley’s friends CALEB and JACKSON are too excited to sleep. When Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop leave, COUSIN SOPHIE asks Arthur what he would wish if he could wish on a falling star. One by one the friends answer Sophie’s question. Stanley wants to have an adventure like his favorite characters from stories (I Wish I Were – Part 1). Arthur interrupts him by declaring that “wizards aren’t real,” but that doesn’t stSuddenly, Stanley hears a voice. He turns on his flashlight and discovers that the BULLETIN BOARD above his bed has come alive to grant his wish. Stanley goes back to sleep and the Bulletin Board works its magic (Stanley’s Wish). Everyone wakes up at a loud noise from Stanley’s room. The Bulletin Board has fallen on Stanley, and JACOB is the first to notice that Stanley is flat! Mrs. Lambchop takes Stanley to visit DOCTOR DAN and NURSE BETTY, but the visit is not helpful. Weeks go by and Stanley is still flat. Arthur and Stanley are waiting for the bus and three Weeks go by and Stanley is still flat. Arthur and Stanley are waiting for the bus and three COOL KIDS (KING COOL, COOL CHUCK, and COOL CALLIE) tie a string to Stanley on a windy day and fly him like a kite. When the bus comes the Cool Kids invite Arthur to go with them, and he does… leaving Stanley behind.

Stanley is stuck in a tree (In A Tree) and regretting his wish when Mrs. Cartero happens by and orders him to climb down. He explains his original wish to her. When she gives Stanley his mail, Mrs. Cartero has an idea: Stanley should travel through the mail (Travelin’ Through The Mail)! Stanley informs the Lambchop family of his new plans and begins his adventure. In Paris, he visits the Louvre Museum and sees the MONA LISA and NAPOLEON. As museum curator O. JAY D’ART does his rounds, he discovers the unthinkable – a painting has been stolen right out of the museum! Stanley promises to help Mona Lisa and Napoleon recover their missing friend. Stanley disguises himself as a painting and calls for the guards when the SNEAK THIEF reappears. A chase ensues, and finally Stanley captures the SneO. Jay D’art thanks Stanley and delivers a letter to him from Mr. and Mrs. Lambchop (Mom And Dad’s Letter). They miss him very much, and Stanley decides to go home. Mrs. Cartero hands the Lambchops a special delivery – it’s Stanley, and he’s not flat anymore! Stanley had fun on his adventures but missed his family. The Lambchops exit as Mrs. Cartero holds up their family photo again, encouraging the audience to make a wish on a star (Epilogue).
