Letter from the President/CEO

Here at Theatre Under The Stars, we make a difference in our community not only through our shows but also with our Education and Community Engagement programs. In April, we hosted our 11th annual Tommy Tune Awards – a program that spotlights the best and brightest high school musical theatre talent in the greater Houston area. To implement the program this year, a team of 29 Houston-based theatre professionals reviewed and critiqued 45 high schools’ musical productions during the 2012-13 school year and made 163 nominations in 15 categories. On the night of the awards, the Hobby Center was filled to capacity with parents, teachers and students who cheered for their colleagues with wild abandon as each award was given. We also celebrated the accomplishments of the students by awarding 10 scholarships to graduating seniors to assist them in their college education.

Programs like the Tommy Tune Awards remind me of why TUTS makes it part of our mission to bring the musical theatre experience into the community. It is only fitting that we often host our annual gala during the same week as the Tommy Tune Awards. The gala serves as a fundraiser for TUTS’ educational programs, and I’m thankful for the donors who contributed more than $615,000 this year. The money raised will help TUTS offer both and as off-site programming to children in schools, hospitals and other community-based sites.

Another star of our Education and Community Engagement programs is the Humphreys School of Musical Theatre – a technique-driven school for the disciplines of theatre. It was created thanks to the generous support of The Humphreys Foundation. A product of a dedicated staff, the support of the community, and students eager to soak up an education in theatre, the school remains strong after four decades in operation. The school has helped to springboard the careers of television stars, Broadway actors, journalists, and Tony Award® winners. In fact, a couple of actors from this season’s production of Camelot got their start in the Humphreys School.

In addition to our community impact, arts and cultural organizations such as TUTS add a great deal to the Houston economy. According to Americans for the Arts and the Houston Arts Alliance, the local nonprofit arts and culture industry generates $977.7 million in annual economic activity in the greater Houston area. Nonprofit arts and culture organizations in the Houston area spent $414.6 million during the 2010 fiscal year, and that spending generated $702.9 million in household income for local residents. Other industries indirectly bolstered by the arts industry include local hotels, restaurants, and transportation companies, just to name a few.

TUTS could not do any of this without the real stars, the people, foundations, corporations and government agencies who generously support us. Tickets sales do not cover the costs of our productions so donors are paramount to our ability to produce shows and provide educational opportunities to thousands of people per year.

Letter from the Artistic Director

Over the past year, it has been a great honor and privilege to serve as Artistic Director of Theatre Under The Stars, working among such a group of immeasurably generous and talented people. I am greatly moved and overwhelmed by the tremendous amount of support I have received from the TUTS’ family since I joined the team.

The last year has brought about many new and exciting opportunities for TUTS. While we continue to preserve and reimagine the great musicals of the past, host national tours, and stage some of the newest and grandest musicals in the country on our main stage, we have expanded our theatre company to stage exhilarating, innovative musicals through our cutting-edge series, TUTS Underground. Our newest venture operates within the framework “No revivals—No dead authors—No boundaries,” and it is our mission to bring ground-breaking, edgy, captivating, and affordable musicals to Houston through this series. The series launched with Dixie’s Tupperware Party in June and will move to a full season of fun musicals in 2013-2014.

I am immensely passionate about the Underground series—a project which has become very special to me personally—and I believe that the City of Houston is the perfect artistic locale for incubating new works and staging unique, pioneering musicals which will set the scene for musical theatre of the future. It is my hope that we can reach a greater range of theatregoers and even attract a new generation of theatregoers with this new series. I feel privileged to share the experience of our intimate new undertaking with you—thank you for taking part in this bold, exciting endeavor.

As an ever-developing metropolis, Houston boasts a diverse community of people from various backgrounds and cultures. Subsequently, Houston has cultivated an increasingly important creative community and is recognized nationally as a significant artistic hub.

TUTS is a pillar of artistic excellence in the City of Houston, and our work is acclaimed nationally. The heart of TUTS is to present and to create quality musical theatre which reaches people cross-culturally and cross-generationally and to serve the community through our many outreach programs. It is my goal for TUTS to become the number one regional theatre in the United States and I believe we can do that by producing musical theatre of the highest caliber, presenting cutting-edge musical premieres, working with professionals on a local, national and international level, and making our shows accessible to everyone. Together, we can accomplish this goal as we reach new heights this year.

With the most sincere enthusiasm, I look forward to serving alongside each of you as we continue to make great progress within the Houston arts community and as we carry on furthering the TUTS legacy.

• TUTS utilized the smaller Zilkha Hall in the Hobby Center to present Dixie’s Tupperware Party to audiences of over 5,000. The performance was loved by audiences and critics alike. Buzz Bellmont of the Houston Chronicle said, “TUTS’ Dixie’s Tupperware Party is Hysterical, Campy Laughfest”

• TUTS announced the launch of TUTS Underground, which utilizes the intimate 500 seat Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center. It’s edgy, captivating, rockin’ and occasionally a bit risqué.

• TUTS Education and community engagement programs reached more than 68,000 children and adults in 2012-2013.

• In 2012, the TUTS Summer Conservatory produced Legally Blonde. The production played to sold out audiences, garnered outstanding reviews and was extended for one additional performance due to high ticket demand.

• The Academy produced Disney’s High School Musical at Miller Outdoor Theatre and played to 14,000 people. For the first time, the Academy students performed in the evening at Miller Outdoor Theatre. This production included 43 student performers.

• Thanks to corporate support, TUTS was able to offer three Free

Days of Reading & Musical Theatre to 2,908 second grade students from some of Houston’s most underserved schools. The students each received a free ticket to the show, The Adventures of Flat Stanley Jr., a copy of the book Flat Stanley: His Original Adventure and transportation to the Hobby Center. Over 90% of teachers said, without free tickets and bus subsidies their school would not have been able to attend this production.

• TUTS provided fine arts enrichment to patients at Texas Children’s Hospital Renal Center. Teachers offered entertainment and enrichment as a comfort and distraction to patients as they receive dialysis.

• TUTS partnered with Houston’s Community Family Centers, a multi-service non-profit organization that offers a wide range of bilingual services to help families in Houston’s Greater East End. TUTS provided after school programming during the school year and two weeks of summer camp for children at the center.

• For the first time in its history, The River offered workshops and classes in the community to young adults, ages 18-35, who have disabilities. Each workshop focused on a different aspect of theatre, including choreography, directing, satire, and audition skills.

• The River and HSMT Academy students partnered together in a full length musical. 12 River Students and 13 Academy students performed Disney’s The Aristocats Kids! This was TUTS’ first all-inclusive performance.

• Enrollment at The River grew 25%.

Total operating revenues reached $14.9 million made up of 64% Ticket revenue, 27% contributions, and 11% interest, investments, and other income.

Theatre Under The Stars relies on the generosity of Individuals, Foundations, Corporations, and the Government to help cover expenses.

Theatre Under The Stars works diligently to maximize each donation and keep overhead costs minimal. TUTS spends 78% of the annual budget on programs, 15% on administrative costs, and 7% on fundraising costs.

It costs TUTS only 28 cents to raise one dollar!
