THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY SENIOR PASTOR’S ARTICLE

Pastor Francis L. Schroeder Holy Cross Lutheran—Nederland

Every year someone says that to me on Ash Wednesday. Maybe it has happened to you too. In the past it used to frustrate me, but in recent years I have come to see it as a great opportunity to share with someone the hope of Jesus Christ. So, what do you say when folks ask you about that smudge on your forehead?

Here are a few responses….

In Old Testament times people used ashes as a sign of repentance. They would sit in ashes, roll around in them, sprinkle them upon their heads, or even mingle them with their food and drink.

Ash Wednesday begins Lent, a time when we stop and assess how we're doing in our walk with God. Lent helps us identify spiritual areas in which we can grow and areas that we need to avoid. To repent, put simply, means to turn away from sin and turn toward God. We use ashes as an outward expression of our need to begin again.

For over twelve hundred years on Ash Wednesday followers have approached the altar and received ashes upon their foreheads. These ashes are made from the burnt palm branches that were blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. Ash Wednesday ashes are applied to believers' foreheads in the shape of the cross.

Ash Wednesday also begins our preparation for Holy Week and the Passion and Resurrection of my Lord, Jesus, without Whom I have no life here and no chance at eternal life in Heaven.

God forgives. He loves. And He gives this sinner a second chance.

Blessings,

Pastor Schroeder

All Ladies are invited!

Oh what “Grateful Hearts”

there are just because of you. Our Trash to Cash project of

collecting stamps is a “grateful” gift. Over $20,000 has been

collected for postage. So many of these stamps or even one stamp has come with a treas-ured memory. What a gift you give. One stamp plus another just add up.

Never think any are too few. Holy Cross LWML has

“grateful hearts” for your help in this mission project.

Put your used stamps in the Nar-thex mailbox of Judy Alvarez or

Sharon Teinert.

LWML Circles

A circle is a group of women who meet once a month for Bible Study, fellowship, to give their

Mites, and learn about the new and exciting things

that are going on with the LWML.

We have 2 Circles at Holy Cross. Each Circle meets at a different time of the month, so that hopefully, each woman can find one

that works best for her.

These Circles are:

1. Women’s Small Group Bible Study—meets the 3rd Thursday at 2:30pm.

2. Women’s Quilting Circle meets Thursdays at 9:30 am in the conference Room. Lutheran Women’s Mis-sionary League of Holy Cross is a “Society” and meets 2nd Tuesday each month at 6pm.

Holy Cross Lutheran Church is

"“Growing In Christ" and we have a place for everyone in your family.

The material we will be using for

Sunday morning children's classes is called "“Growing in Christ."

Growing in Christ is a traditional

classroom Sunday School for all ages. This same-age classroom model helps students

learn and grow in faith alongside their peers as they explore the Bible, draw connections

to the Small Catechism, and learn the traditions of the Lutheran Church.

Can We Invite Friends to Church/Youth Events?

This question is asked just about every time we have a special event for youth or adults

and I often wonder why? Luke 14:23 says, "Then the master told his servant, Go out to the

roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full.”

So, can we invite friends, family, neighbors to functions, events, worship, Bible studies and youth or adult events at Holy Cross?

The answer is —YES!

In fact I believe, we should always, always, always be inviting someone to join

us for everything we participate in at Holy Cross: Worship Services, Bible Study, Confirmation, Youth Events, Adult Fellowship Events, potluck dinners.

If our doors are open, then we should…

ALWAYS INVITE A FRIEND!

CIRCUIT 34 MISSION COUNCIL NEWS

We continue to move toward our goal of establishing a new Hispanic congregation in Port Arthur. Pastor Casillas comes to our area for ESL

classes each Wednesday. He is present at the Thrift Store on Saturday to make contact with those who come there to shop. Sunday morn-

ing worship is held each week at Trinity at 9:00 AM.

The tentative name of the new congregation is La Trinidad. They are in the process of identifying members who could serve as officers of

the congregation, so the group could

apply to the Texas District for a charter. In addition to the Pastor, they would need a

president, a secretary and a treasurer.

We are in need of a bi-lingual teacher! Rosie Cabrera, a member at Trinity, teaches an ESL Bible study each Tuesday from 9 AM to 10

AM. She teaches simple Bible stories using Sunday School lessons and some Arch Books. Rosie is moving away in December, so we need someone who could work with this group. If you can help, please contact Pastor Tim Dinger

at 409-983-1130 or [email protected].

Food Pantry: The Circuit 34 Mission Council board met on Sunday, November 9. The board decided to suspend operation of the Food Pan-

try until March 28. Our bank balance had reached the point that if we continued the Food Pantry, we would not be able to support Pastor

Casillas properly. If our financial condition improves, we will resume the Food Pantry in the spring.

We thank the Texas District Lutheran Women's Missionary League for their gift to the Hispanic Mission. They have allotted $7700 for our mission.

The November issue of The Lutheran Witness has an excellent article about our work to establish this new

congregation.

As always, remember The Thrift Store at Trinity. It is open Tuesday,

Friday and Saturday from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM. They always need help at the store.

Please consider giving a few hours of your time to serve in this way.

The Thrift Store sells any kind of items: clothing, household furnishings, dishes, tools, etc. Be sure all your unwanted items go to the Thrift Store. Proceeds from the store fund the ESL program at Trinity.

Please pray for the success of our mission outreach and consider how you and your congregation can help with this kingdom work.

To our Thrivent Financial Members Have you allocated your 2014 choice dollars? Remember, you have to do this annually for these to go to

Holy Cross or the charity you chose. The deadline to allocate you choice dollars for last year is March, 2015.

If you have any questions about Thrivent Choice Dollars, the new Action Teams program,

or how Thrivent Financial can help you with your life insurance, retirement or investment needs.

Please call your representative or contact me and I will be happy to help with any questions you may have.

Thank you,

Thank you!

A special thank you to everyone at Holy Cross for your prayers, kindness, love, support, understanding, and encouragement throughout 2014. My sincere thanks to the youth of our congregation for taking steps for-ward to grow in your faith to which you were baptized. It is not easy to take time to be in God’s Word and in God’s house with your busy schedules, yet you do it and I am ever so thankful! It is such a blessing to be able to see you walk with Jesus. Also, a sincere thank you to all the parents, families and individuals who

have donated their time and talents to make our youth and church activities worth coming to. By the grace of God our youth programs are growing and the activities could not go on without you. An extra special

thank you to Michael Rose, one of my former youth, who graciously and selflessly serves as our High School Youth Leader. There are not many 20-somethings who would give up their weekends and evenings to

spend time with high school students, but Michael does, and for that I am truly thankful. Our team minis-try has made both Middle School and High School Youth ministry better. Also a special thanks to those who are “always” there every Wednesday and Sunday. We are indebted to you! I want to thank Holy Cross Lu-

theran Church for your precious gift and offering this Christmas!! Your generosity is beyond words!!! Thank you. To God be the Glory! Finally, thank you to our Heavenly Father, who called me to serve here.

Without God’s amazing guidance, patience, forgiveness and love I would not be here, but 14 1/2 years later, I am still here. Thank you, Lord Jesus!

Love Always in Christ,

Kristy L. Witek Director of Christian Education

PS: Thank you to the person/family who gave me the “Tuscany” gift card. I was somehow unable to record
