Israel ceased to exist in 70 AD, and the Jews spread out around the

world.

Jewish populations lived throughout the world.

Throughout history, the Jewish people lived in other people’s

countries, and periodically they were discriminated against.

In the late 1800s, a Hungarian Jew named Theodore Herzl came up with an

idea that would protect Jewish people from discrimination…

The Jews should have their own homeland…

This started the Zionist movement.

Page 24: The Modern World Standard 10.10 and 10.11. Your world after high school.

During the War, the British Foreign Minister, Lord Balfour, issued the Balfour Declaration.

The British government promised to support the Zionist cause of creating a homeland for Jews in Palestine.

• This is what two women told human rights workers about the maquila where they work in Tehuacan, south-east of Mexico City:

• Each shift is from 8.30 am until 8.30 pm, but if workers do not complete the number of clothes they have been told to make that day, they must work longer without any pay;

• Workers are paid between $30 and $50 per week;• Girls as young as 12 and 13 work in the factory;• When workers leave the factory (to go to lunch or to go

home) they are searched to make sure they haven't stolen anything;

• When women are hired, they are tested to see if they are pregnant. If they are pregnant, they are fired.

• If you arrive 15 minutes late, you must work for 3 days without pay.

• When maquila workers organized an independent trade union about 10 years ago, one of its leaders was assassinated.

• When NAFTA was passed through the Congress, by both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, and was signed into law by President, Bill Clinton, he stated:

“I believe that NAFTA will create 200,000 American jobs in the first two years of its effect… What does that mean? It means that there will be an even more rapid closing of the gap between our two wage rates. And as the benefits of economic growth are spread in Mexico to working people, what will happen? They'll have more disposable income to buy more American products and there will be less illegal immigration because more Mexicans will be able to support their children by staying home.  This is a very important thing.”

• The “Free” and “Fair” trade agreements that our elected officials have made with foreign nation are neither “Free” nor “Fair.” America has lost 3.2 million manufacturing jobs since 2000.
