• WILLIAM PENN (1644-1718)• 1. Born in London as a son of a wealthy admiral• 2. He believed in fair practices with the Indians• 3. Active preacher in 1666 of the Quakers• 4. He welcomed immigrants• 5. He supported toleration of dissenters• 6. HE promised religious tolerance• 7. HE received a charter to start the colony of

WHO WERE THE QUAKERS?

• The Society of Friends, one of the largest groups in New Jersey that were heavily persecuted for their religious beliefs.

QUAKERS’ BELIEFS

• 1. They did not follow normal religious practices

• 2. Dressed plainly• 3. They believed in the

equality of men and women before God

• 4. Supported nonviolence and religious tolerance

• 5. Many of their practices SHOCKED most Christians

• 6. Many were persecuted for their beliefs

Why did William Penn establish Pennsylvania and HOW DID HE

INFLUENCE ITS GOVERNMENT?• William Penn wished to found a

larger colony (Pennsylvania) under his own control that would provide a safe home for Quakers.

• Penn limited his own power and established an elected assembly.

• He also promised religious freedom to all Christians.
