wo Fat Butchers celebrate 3rd Anniversary

    By Carol BallardWarren County Report

I youd been hunting in Nebras-ka, shot a mule deer and needed itprocessed, where would you takeit?

Youd haul it in your pickup allthe way back to Front Royal to the

wo Fat Butchers, right? One day last winter just such a

hunter came to Roger Smith andKyle Loyd, co-owners o the shopat 39-C South St. and they werehappy to process it or him.

I someone kills a deer andeld-dresses it, they can bring it

to us and well skin it out, wash it,hang it up and cut it, Smith said.

Loyd had their 009 process-ing numbers handy. Last yearwe processed 650 to 675 deer, 10bear, one elk and one mule deer,

he said.Or i you need to get in a supply

o alligator tails or kangaroo steaksor the winter, where would you

go? Again, Te wo Fat Butchersis your answer.

We can order exotics includingalligator tail, bu alo, kangaroo, ostrich, but we have to order inlarge quantities, and people haveto order it in the size it comes in,Roger said.

Also, he said, he thought it wascatchy and hed been nick-named

at boy as a child and Loyd wascalled the at butcher when heworked or a grocery store.

With 5 years o experiencebetween them, they know whattheyre doing. Smith startedbutchering on his athers arm

7 years ago and Loyd, as Jour-neyman Meat Cutter worked thesame amount o time in the butch-er departments o grocery stores.

All I ever did was cut meat,Loyd said.

    AskStewart

    Dear Stewart,

Im going to ask a loaded questionand know you will come up with aninteresting answer. What is the bestway to kill a tree?

    Really a tree lover

Dear Really a ree Lover and all ourreaders out there,

Yes, I have some very interestingways to kill a tree. Be ore I get my-sel in trouble this is really tongue incheek and try to read between thelines on this.1) First and oremost, go ahead andplant your tree too deep or in toosmall o a hole. Both will do a good job o not allowing the roots to de- velop properly. Remember to ignorethe root fare, where the base o trunkswells out to become roots enteringthe soil. Te root fare should have

been at ground level or just aboveground level i you had wanted thetree to live.

) Now apply the tallest mound o mulch around the tree that you can.Make sure it looks like an ant hillor, better yet, a volcano. I have yetto see something like this occurringnaturally in the woods, but sure see awhole lot o these piles in residentialneighborhoods and at commerciallandscaping in the area. Rememberthe root fare in the rst topic; thiswill surely cover that important rootfare.3) Another option is to orego themulch entirely. Tis will allow youto get right up and gouge the tendertrunk with your weed eater or lawn-mower. Repetition each week workswonders here.4) Once the tree gets nice and es-tablished and is growing very well, providing your house with that niceshade, go ahead and top it back se-

verely. You can use the excuse thatit is growing too tall i anybody asks.Te neat thing about this is the treewill now grow about eight timesquicker each year, so prepare yourwallet or continued topping. Telight at the end o the tunnel is thateventually the tree will die rom con-tinued topping and you can start overat point number one with a new tree.

Tese are some o the things I seeeach day in Front Royal that resultin crippled looking and dead trees. Idare each and every one o you to ig-nore my instructions above on how tokill a tree and to make a commitmentto properly care or your trees. Teseare valuable assets in your landscapethat will pay you back hundred oldin bene ts rom a bit o proper care

    rom the beginning.
