MARCH 2018 PAGE 3

Pastoral Reflections by Father Costas “Open to me the gates of repentance, O Giver of Life, for early in the morning my spirit hastens to Your holy temple, bringing the temple of my body all defiled. But as one compassionate, cleanse me, I pray, by Your loving-kindness and mercy.” Hearing the above hymn chanted at the matins service on Sunday morning, following the gospel reading, we know that we are in the midst of Great Lent. In fact the whole month of March is immersed in this blessed season. During this time the church places before us more opportunities to pray in church, to fast more, and to be mindful of other and their needs. But everything begins with ME. All my efforts should be focused on what I need to do to change, to change the one and only person I have power over, myself. It is so easy to criticize others, but oh how difficult to honestly look at ourselves and to be critical of our shortcomings. This is why the fathers of the church say that, without humility no one can advance in their spiritual journey. Without humility, we cannot be honest with ourselves. And if we cannot be honest with ourselves, we cannot make changes within us that will make us better Christians. These days before us we call Great Lent, is a season when the Church challenges us to live fully and honestly our Christian faith. Of course, we’re supposed to live our faith each and every day throughout our lives, but we all realize how hard that is to do. And sometimes we need a special reason, a little “push,” an added incentive to get us back on track in our spiritual journey. That is the purpose for Lent – a limited period of time – to not only get us back on track, but to also prepare us for the greatest feast of the year, Christ’s Resurrection! So, what should we do to get the most out of this time of year? The Church understands well that we humans are psycho-somatic beings. Our bodies and minds are interrelated; we can’t separate the two. What affects our body will have an impact on our minds, and vice-versa. Translating this into religious terms, we could say that our spiritual and material worlds deeply intersect with one another. This is why Lent combines spiritual exercises with physical ones – we combine prayer with fasting; we participate in more worship as we strive to increase our almsgiving. We

understand that we can’t grow in spirit, if we’re not consciously attending to our material being. So the Church advises us to deliberately attend to our mind, body, and spirit throughout Lent. First, we journey through Lent with a spirit of “JOYFUL SADNESS.” Even though we are depriving our bodies from certain foods and limit the entertainment in our normal lifestyle, still our spirit should be one of joy. We’re striving to enter into deeper communion with our Creator, who is the source of joy, as well as journeying towards the greatest event in history, the joyous resurrection of our Lord. So let us never forget to carry with us, and radiate onto others, the spirit of joy no matter how hard our Lenten journey may seem. But this joy is combined with a certain SADNESS. Not a sadness about changing our lifestyle, but a sober reflection on our life, with all its sins and shortcomings. Lent is a time of serious reflection and evaluation of one’s own life. Where have we fallen short in God’s eyes? Where have we not fulfilled our potential as holy saints? Where do we need to repent and change our direction so that we can draw closer to our Lord instead of falling away from Him? This sober sadness should not lead to despair, but should guide us to a refreshing and renewing change, to a deeper life in Christ! Along with this spirit of joyful sadness, other essential attitudes to cultivate throughout Lent are of mercy and compassion, forgiveness and reconciliation. It is not by coincidence that the Sunday before Lent is called the Sunday of Forgiveness. We cannot journey closer towards God if we are not ready to forgive one another. Lent is a time of reconciling with those from whom we have distanced ourselves. Along with carrying a certain spirit, the Church also teaches us to practice concrete Lenten disciplines – both spiritual and physical. The traditional holy triad of disciplines for Lent are PRAYER, FASTING and ALMSGIVING. During this 40 day period, let’s try to increase our discipline of prayer. How do you pray, typically, each day? Try to discipline yourselves to actually pray each day. Get a prayer book, or if you need some guidance, come and talk with me, but begin saying and even increasing your prayers each day throughout this Lent. As we increase our personal prayers, Lent also calls us into a cycle of more communal prayers. We will have additional Church services throughout Lent

Greek Coffee Enjoy a cup of Greek Coffee made especially for you during the coffee social once a month by the Greek Corner. The schedule for the next three months will be as follows:

March 4 April 1 May 13

– Great Compline on Monday evenings, Pre-Sanctified Liturgy on Wednesday evenings, the Salutations to the Virgin Mary on Friday, along with our Sunday Liturgy. Make it a point to participate in at least one additional Church service as a part of your prayer discipline during the seven weeks of Lent. Along with prayer, the most obvious aspect of Lent is fasting. For those who can follow a strict fast, this means not eating meat or dairy products for the entire Lenten period. If this seems too much for some, though, then try a limited fast – maybe fasting strictly during the first week of Lent and Holy Week, and then during the rest of Lent fasting only from meat. Remember, though, that fasting is not only about the types of food you eat, but also about the amounts of food. One saying of the Fathers put it this way, “Get up from the table always being a little hungry.” Fasting helps us learn to discipline ourselves, as well as to make us conscious of our dependence on God. We overcome the dictatorship of our bodily needs to focus on our spiritual needs. This implies not only fasting from food, but fasting from sinful habits as well! Finally, together with increased prayer and fasting should come more generous almsgiving. Let us give more of our finances, our time, and our talents to those in need. Our Lenten journey towards God can never be seen separate from our journey towards the other, especially those in need. Lent should be a time when we try to visit the sick or the lonely, reach out to someone in need, give from the many blessings we have to those less fortunate. As the opening hymn states, may our merciful Lord

guide us to repentance and bless each one of us to

carry the proper spirit and to practice the helpful

disciplines so that having being cleansed through this

Lenten journey, we may draw closer to our Creator,

and fully participate in His Glorious and Holy Resur-

rection!

~ Toni Mannarino

Sunday School Director

Great Lent brings much activity for our Sunday School ministry. We had a beautiful Sunday of Orthodoxy with all of the children participating with the icons of their patron saints. Thank you to the parents for allowing the children to bring such precious belongings with them to church. Thank you to all of the Godparents who attended the various activities within our Sunday School classrooms. Our children work so hard each and every week and for you to see that hard work is such an important part of your role as an Orthodox Godparent. Thank You again. We will have the Parish Oratorical Festival following Sunday School on Sunday, April 22nd. For any questions or for details, please see Erika Sullivan. This year, we will have an elementary division as well. Students from 3rd-6th grade will have the opportunity to write a short speech to present. Parents, please encourage them and attend the Oratorical Festival in the Teen Room that day. Sunday, March 11th is the third Sunday of Lent, and the children will remain upstairs for the Exaltation of the Cross service. Following that service, they will go down for Sunday School. As we begin Great Lent, try to honor this time by making it stand out for your family. There are many ways - fasting, family prayer time (reading bible stories), less TV or electronics, attending at least one service during the week besides Sundays, etc. If you or your children have never attended a week night service, try coming to one of each to experience Lent with your church family. Please see the flyer in this issue of The Messenger for the Holy Friday Youth Retreat. All schools should be closed that day, so sign your children up early to ensure our chair people have an idea of how many to expect. If you are able, please volunteer your time to assist in some way. Many hands make for light work. It's a nice feeling to spend that holy day at Church. Wishing you all a blessed beginning of Great Lent!

~ Kathy Glaros Greek School Superintendent

It is truly hard to believe that we are almost at the end of the school year. It always seems to arrive too quickly. As we get ready to begin the month of March, Greek School once again has some special events to celebrate. On March 24th our students will participate in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Cleveland, Ohio. We would dearly love all our students to be a part of this event. It is with feelings of deep ethnic pride, that our school will be presenting to you on March 25th our annual Greek Independence Day Program in church following the Divine Liturgy. This celebration honors two major holidays. We celebrate and give thanks to God for His double gift on that day. The Salvation of the human soul and Greek Independence Day. It is a day we celebrate the freedom and values that everyone should cherish and safeguard. It is a day we need to think and plan for the future because the continuation of our nation and culture is in our hands. Let's emphasize to our children the value of freedom and liberty. This is a value that came with the early lessons of the Ancient Greek philosophers and historians. The Greek People have always fought to keep their Country free. Let's emphasize that “Η Ελλάδα ποτέ δεν πεθαίνει.” It is our responsibility to pass the traditions of our country to the new generation. Immediately after the program we will be hosting breakfast to all our Parishioners in the Hellenic Center to celebrate Greek Independence Day. We look forward to seeing you all. Upcoming Events:

Wednesday, March 14, 2018 ~ Lenten Dinner

Monday, April 2, 2018 ~ No School/Holy Week

Monday, April 9, 2018 ~ Classes Resume/Report cards go home

Thanks to all who assist in keeping the Greek Language an integral part of the church's Programs.

Tuesdays (10:00 – 11:30 a.m.)

Our current Book:

“Acquiring the Mind of Christ” by Archmandrite Sergius (Bowyer)

St. Paul clearly states:

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus…” (Phil 2:5)

How do we acquire this Mind of Christ and where is it to be found? For the Orthodox Christian, salvation is the acquisition of the Mind of Christ which is to be found in the Church. This acquisition moves us from the image of God to the likeness of God and this knowledge is eternal life. (John 17:3) This small book hopes to begin to answer how acquiring the Mind of Christ is possible and why it is necessary in our lives today. The book is available in our bookstore ($15.00). An excerpt: “ …The purpose for which we were created is that we might know God and through this knowledge (which denotes communion) become eternal, sharing in God’s very life”

Our Topic: The Divine Liturgy based on the book…

“Journey to the Kingdom” by Father Vassilios Papavassiliou

There is no better way to understand the theology, spirit, and faith of Eastern Orthodoxy than by entering into its central worship: the Divine Liturgy. Fr. Papavassiliou takes you on this journey with clarity and passion, exploring the Liturgy as a reflection of heavenly worship and as an invitation to enter the Kingdom of God. The hymns, prayers, creed, and actions of the Liturgy are explained, covering subjects such as communion, Trinity, baptism, sainthood, and resurrection.

“Blessed is the kingdom of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and forever and unto ages of ages. Amen.”

What we all too often forget is that we are called

into communion with a Living God.

Let us join together on this life long journey!

Myrofores - Myrrh Bearers

Holy Friday, April 6th, 2018

We encourage all girls in preschool through 6th grade to participate as Myrofores on Holy Friday. We welcome all girls preschool through 6th grade to participate in the 3:00 p.m. "Taking down from the Cross" service. Only girls in grades 3rd—6th are welcome to participate in the 7:00 p.m. Lamentations service. Myrofores are asked to dress in all white (dress /shoes / stockings /socks/ sweaters). Each girl will carry a white basket filled with red rose petals. They will be seated in reserved seats in front of the first pew on each side of the church. Parents are asked to sit behind them. In the afternoon "Taking down from the Cross" service, the Myrfores proceed with the altar boys as the priest carries the Epitaphio (cloth with embroidered image of Christ) around the church. They will then place their rose petals on the Epitaphio after the priest plac-es it in the Kouvouklion. They represent the myrrh-bearing women who anointed the body of Christ in the tomb. In the evening service, the Myrofores come forth and place their rose petals in the Epitaphion during the Lamentation hymns. During the Procession, they will walk as a group near the front of the procession. An important rehearsal will take place on Lazarus Saturday, March 31st in church following Liturgy and after breakfast. All girls need to attend. We invite everyone to join in making the palms for Palm Sunday following the rehearsal. Please fill out the form below to register your daughter. We need a solid count so we know how many baskets to prepare. Turn in your forms to the church office or you can submit a form online at www.stpaulgoc.org.

Remember the Church in Your Will

MAKING A DIFFERENCE! Throughout our life, from birth to death, the Church offers us grace and power by which to live. It inspires us, prays for us, heals us, and teaches us how to confess our sins and how to forgive each other. The Church baptizes those who wish to follow Christ. It blesses our marriages and sends us to our eternal home with prayers and blessings at our death.

The Church is the only thing that accompanies us throughout our life and beyond. We support it in many ways and especially through our financial gifts. Do you want to make a difference in the lives of those who benefit from St. Paul Greek Orthodox Church? If so, you may wish to consider a charitable bequest.

WHAT IS A BEQUEST? A charitable bequest is a method for parishioners and friends to perpetuate their interest and support for their Greek Orthodox Church. Your will can be drafted to leave either a specific gift or a percentage of your estate to the Church. A specific gift can be a dollar amount, a particular piece of real estate or personal property. A residuary gift is either a specific percentage of your estate or it can be the remainder of your estate after you have provided for your family, or other charitable interests which are important to you. For more information, contact the church office at 440-237-8998; someone will be in contact with you.
