Update on Stewardship 2015From the Stewardship Steering Committee
The second of November marks the midway point in our Stewardship campaign for 2015 pledges, and we are encouraged to report that approximately half of the 2014 pledgers have made a pledge for 2015.
Every Sunday, parishioners are speaking about the importance of stewardship as it relates to financial support of the ministries in which they are personally involved. The Friday eMessenger also features a comment from the committee or ministry chairs about stewardship.
These are reminders that you need to send in your pledge for 2015! The committee is asking for 100% participation from the parish. By mid-November, parishioners who have not yet submitted their pledge will be contacted by the stewardship workers. Please save them a telephone call and send in your pledge before our Sunday Stewardship Celebration on December 7.
The 2014 Stewardship booklet and pledge forms are available in the foyers of the Ministries Center and Parish Hall. You may also download the booklet and forms on our website at www.stjamesbr.org, where you can also submit your pledge online (or by direct, private email to [email protected]), and set up automatic contributions toward your pledge while you’re at it!

Advent WreathsJoin us on the first Sunday of Advent, November 30 at 10:00 a.m. in Bishops Hall where all ages will gather to create our individual home Advent wreath.
Foam, candles & boxwood will be supplied, sufficient for one wreath per household. You may want to bring garden snips, ribbon, extra greenery, berries, or other decorations.

Preparing for the Season of Preparation
St. James Angel TreeBy Mary Boutwell, Director of Lay Ministries
St. James will again partner with two organizations this Christmas season to help provide presents for those in need. The St. James Angel Tree will be up by mid-November, giving time for you to select a recipient and make a thoughtful gift choice before the agency deadline to gather the presents for delivery.
Be a Santa to a Senior
These angels are elderly, living alone, and likely to not have presents over Christmas. You are free to purchase anything, but there will be a sheet below the tree with suggestions. A blue or pink dot on each angel designates whether your recipient is male or female. Please take an ornament from the tree, purchase a gift, wrap it, and attach the ornament to the gift. Then, place your gift under the tree before December 1 for the Home Instead representatives to collect for delivery.
Salvation Army
Presents for children in need will be coordinated through the local Salvation Army in a ministry headed by Holly and Jason Munn. Please tear off the card with its tab from the ornament. A description of your angel is provided to help you shop for your gift. Wrap the gifts, and attach the original card/ornament securely to the present, and place back under the tree before December 15 for the Salvation Army.
If you have any questions, please email Mary Boutwell or phone here at 225-387-5141, extension 229.
Greeters for the Ministries CenterAsking a greeter, “Why are you here each week?” she replied, “Church is more than attending a Sunday service. It’s getting to know people, its joining a ministry you enjoy…then it’s your church!”
Please consider this ministry for yourself, a friend, or new member who might be enriched by volunteering as Ministries Center Greeter. To sign up, please click here, type your name in the spot you wish to fill, and we’ll see you at the Ministries Center where you’ll answer the phone and direct calls to the appropriate office, greet visitors at the door offering directions to their meeting spot, or offering WeCare bags to those who may come in search of a bite to eat.
Friday mornings still offer some openings. If you’ve wanted a initiative to come enjoy the Friday Day School Eucharist, this would be a great addition to your morning, as the Eucharist begins about 8:20 a.m., and is over in time for the greeter shift from nine ‘til noon.
The Day School Parents Guild extends thanks to all the sponsors, donors, Parish Partners, and attendees for helping to make Carnival 2014 such a great success!
Parish Partners (as of press time) included:
• Linda & Bob Bowsher • Judy & Frank Foil • Barrie & Lee Griffin • Janet & Billy Heroman• Susie & Buzzy Heroman• Betsy & Hank Harper• Zoe & Cooper Harrell• Julie & Andy McCall• OteyWhite&Assoc.Advertising Agency • Sharon & Gary Poirrier • Sylvia & Craig Rabalais • Rieta & Ben Reiser • Mary Sentell

Episcopal Church Women Kick Off the Fall with CoffeeA great time was had by all at ECW’s Annual Fall Coffee and Meeting that was held on Tuesday, October 7.
The group visited, and held their meeting. At the meeting, the members shared exciting reports on Gumbo and their new ministry: St. Mary’s Mom-to-Mom.
There are 15 moms in the first-Friday morning Mom-to-Mom group; and, eight in the second-Thursday evening group. Both groups meet once a month and are reading A Modern Girls Guide to Bible Study. The Friday group next meets on November 7 from 9:30-10:30 a.m., and the Thursday group on November 13, 6-7 p.m.
The ECW is supporting these groups by providing the mothers with the books, childcare and refreshments. It’s not too late to join!

The groups are reading A Modern Girls Guide to Bible Study by Jen Hatmaker. If you would like more information or to reserve child care, please contact Mary Boutwell.

Trinity Institute: Save the Date!Creating Common Good: January 22-24, 2015
Economic inequality in the United States is a pervasive, overwhelming issue. Our society is increasingly made up of have and have-nots, and this consistently widening gap represents a condition decried by the prophets, forcefully addressed by Jesus, and singled out by a number of contemporary voices in economics and public policy as a serious but correctable obstacle to human thriving.
Many of us worry that we are complicit in a system that perpetuates economic inequality, and we feel uncomfortable and tense because this complicity goes against our deeply held Christian values about social justice. Many avoid the topic because taking a stand against economic inequality is difficult, and we don’t know what we can do – as individuals and as the Church – to effect change in a broken system.
The Trinity Institute program, provided by the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation in live simulcast, will include the Most Rev. Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury; Cornel West; and Robert Reich, among other. Read more at http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/trinity-institute/2015/what%E2%80%99s-ti2015.
November at the CSF:• People of faith have been making pilgrimages for countless
centuries. Members of our community will recount their recent experiences, with a focus of why the particular sites they visited have been important to Christianity. Marsha Wade and Renée Smith Tadie will describe their recent Celtic Pilgrimage, walking in the footsteps of St. Patrick, on Sunday, November 16.
• Deacon Charles deGravelles, Trinity Episcopal Church, Baton Rouge, has worked in prison ministries for many years, and will discuss his experiences working with inmates on death row, taking Episcopal students to the prison, and his book in progress: a biography of football legend and prison dentist Billy Cannon, as part of the Center’s OurMinistryintheWorld series, on Sunday, November 9.
• Fr. Mark Holland will give the Anglican perspective, history, and practices regarding the season of Advent on Sunday, November 23.
All sessions are Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. Coffee and cookies are available in the atrium. Come on over!
Wednesday, November 5 at noon: The Joan of Arc Study Group meets at the home of Becky Johnson. Prior John Pitzer will present the lesson on St. James, and his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. Contact NinaBroyles for more information.
Friday, November 7: The Associate Vestry invites you to the Fall Hospitality Party! See the back cover for more information.
Thursday, November 20 at noon: Graduates of Education for Ministry through Sewanee gather for a brown-bag lunch, lesson and discussion in the manner of EfM study, hosted this month by Barbara Bearden. For information about joining the group, contact NancyJoPoirrier.
