THE MESSENGER The Weekly Newsletter of the Mountain Home Church of Christ April 12, 2015 The Purpose of Worship (Adapted from a Lesson from the Gospel Advocate) The term “worship” is found 116 times in the New King James Version of the Bible. As it is most commonly used, worship refers to the act of paying homage or showing reverence to God. While we as New Testament Christians are good about understanding the “assembling of the saints” on the first day of the week we must be certain that it is more than an outward showing or praising of God. Matthew 15:8-9 reminds us that we must also bow to him and praise Him in our hearts!! Jesus instructed “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24) Most of us understand that we need to be reverent when we worship, not being flip- pant or casual. Traditions must be laid aside; and cultural trends must be ignored. Real true worship is not conducted to satisfy the appetite of man, but to truly worship the creator. Bottom line is: it is not about us! We all know of instances in today’s world where attending church is more like going to an event or even a concert. People flock to attend to be entertained. Then they talk about how great a “service” they attended and how they truly worshipped God. I’ve looked but I cannot find where this is how we are told to worship God in the New Testa- ment. More accurately, we must worship God as he has instructed us to. I think that most importantly we need to understand that worshipping God is a privi- lege. Too often we get caught up in the feeling that it is an obligation we “have” to do. We need to remember we chose to become a Christian. In choosing we then must remember our purpose and the instructions that come with that choice. Some key words that we should remember that pertain to worship: 1) Reverently (Exodus 3:1-6) 2) Joyfully (Psalms 100:1-5; 122:1) 3) Obediently (John 4:19-26) In His Service, John Schuhknecht SHEPHERD’S CORNER….John Schuhknecht Singing Workshop…..Daniel Hudgeons will be here on Saturday and Sunday, April 18 & 19, for a weekend event focusing on singing within our worship assembly. The Purpose of Worship

(Adapted from a Lesson from the Gospel Advocate)

The term “worship” is found 116 times in the New King James Version of the Bible.

As it is most commonly used, worship refers to the act of paying homage or showing

reverence to God. While we as New Testament Christians are good about understanding

the “assembling of the saints” on the first day of the week we must be certain that it is

more than an outward showing or praising of God. Matthew 15:8-9 reminds us that we

must also bow to him and praise Him in our hearts!! Jesus instructed “God is spirit, and

those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)

Most of us understand that we need to be reverent when we worship, not being flip-

pant or casual. Traditions must be laid aside; and cultural trends must be ignored.

Real true worship is not conducted to satisfy the appetite of man, but to truly worship

the creator. Bottom line is: it is not about us!

We all know of instances in today’s world where attending church is more like going

to an event or even a concert. People flock to attend to be entertained. Then they talk

about how great a “service” they attended and how they truly worshipped God. I’ve

looked but I cannot find where this is how we are told to worship God in the New Testa-

ment. More accurately, we must worship God as he has instructed us to.

I think that most importantly we need to understand that worshipping God is a privi-

lege. Too often we get caught up in the feeling that it is an obligation we “have” to

do. We need to remember we chose to become a Christian. In choosing we then must

remember our purpose and the instructions that come with that choice.

Some key words that we should remember that pertain to worship:

1) Reverently (Exodus 3:1-6)

2) Joyfully (Psalms 100:1-5; 122:1)

3) Obediently (John 4:19-26)
