Volume 51, Issue 2 February 2017 First United Methodist Church—Newton, Iowa The Messenger Messenger We are in the process of updating our membership records for there are many people that we have lost track of over the years. In keeping with the Discipline of the United Methodist Church, we will be sending a series of letters over the next three years inviting people to come back into the fellowship of our church or notify us if they have united with another church. We will also be conducting a phone-a- thon, inviting you who are active and willing to make phone calls to members who still live in the area. Our objective is to invite them to come back to worship or let us know if they are attending another church and would like to be removed from our membership rolls. If you have family members who are attending another church and no longer wish to be a full member of Newton First United Methodist Church, “See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight—indeed, He is coming, says the Lord of hosts.” Malachi 3:1 information on these individuals and their addresses, please call the church office. We want our membership records to reflect the health of our church attendance. We realize that some of our members are home bound or in care facilities and cannot attend worship. We also recognize that some of our young members are in college and do not have permanent residences yet. Regardless of circumstances in a person’s life, we want them to know that they are always welcome at First United Methodist Church. When you are home from college, visiting family, or have a Sunday morning off, we hope you will come to worship with us for we are all a part of the family of God. Please watch for more information concerning the various things we will be doing in the near future as we reach out across the membership of our church. Yours in Christ, Pastor Gary please reach out and ask them to notify our church office. We also have a large group of people who are living out of state and have never removed their membership from our church rolls. For some people, we lack the necessary information to contact them. Church LeadershipChurch LeadershipChurch LeadershipChurch Leadership

First United Methodist Church is experiencing an urgent participation and leadership need! Historically, our congregation has proven year after year to be a giving and loving congregation. This “attitude of gratitude” to God was never more evident than in 2016 when giving to the church dramatically increased. Your generosity significantly closed our financial gap! Many thanks to those of you who gave generously! We are now facing another major gap in the life of our congregation. While many of you are generous in giving of your time and talents (practically no one refuses to help when our Coordinator of Lay Ministries calls), we need more of you to take one more step. We need team members on several of our functional teams. But particularly, we need a Lay Leader and new members on our Generosity & Stewardship Team. In addition, we need someone to fill another major leadership role in guiding and directing our Generosity & Stewardship Team. Please take some time in your prayers to ask God about your role in the church. You have heard it said many times that it is better to give than to receive. Well, the truth of that statement lives in the fact that what you receive from the act of giving is better than any other gift. God truly blesses the heart of the cheerful giver. Please prayerfully consider taking part in a leadership role; and don’t think that you would have to “go it alone.” For many years now our Trustees (now Facilities & Properties) has been very successfully led by co-chairs. Remember, “where two or more are gathered in my name there I am also.” Wow, that’s a triumvirate! How can you miss as a co-chair with Christ as one of your partners?! Also, please don’t think that because you don’t like to come out at night that you are excluded from participating. If you have a telephone and you use email, you can participate. Many of us can bring two participants into a conference call with our cell phones; and Joy will be happy to email you the relevant documents prior to the meeting. Please don’t hide your light. If you feel the Spirit might be calling you to the opportunity to take a step farther into the life of our church, you can discuss your feelings with someone on the Leadership Development Team: Pastor Gary, Terry Faidley, Tim Blount, Shawna Forst, Pat Drew, Karen Kriz, Connie Carmichael, Rachel Faidley, or Roger Swanson. God loves you, Christ needs you, and the Spirit calls you. Amen and Amen.

Pat’s PathPat’s PathPat’s PathPat’s Path How are your New Year’s resolutions holding up? I hope you are hanging in there! We will be serving at Trinity on March 31st. Check

your calendars and try to volunteer to help with this event. You will find a sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center later in February. For those who are new in the church, we prepare food to take to Trinity United Methodist Church in Des Moines where we serve approximately 100 children and adults in need of a meal. This need is growing. The Wednesday night meals are in full swing again after the holidays. There will not be a meal on March 1st due to Ash Wednesday. Keep checking the Welcome Center for opportunities to volunteer and provide food. Thank you to those who brought brownies for the January meal. Remember, there is a collection can at the Welcome Center if you are interested in providing money to help offset the cost of this ministry’s food. Even loose change adds up fast and helps. There is still time to sign up to help read through “Change a Child’s Story.” We have until June to finish this program and there are still children who need help with their reading at school.

5

There are RSVP packets at the Welcome Center to complete as individual background checks are necessary for clearance in the schools. Ash Wednesday is March 1st; Maundy Thursday is April 13th; and Good Friday is April 14th. I will be looking for ushers and sound engineers for those dates. Please see me if you are interested. I want to thank everyone who has served as coffee host and/or brought refreshments on Sunday mornings. If you would like to add your name to either of these service lists, please see me. Even if you do not stay for coffee, it is a way to Reach In to others within our church. Please bring your refreshments to the kitchenette off the parlor on the main floor. The coffee host will then be able to find them to use. Coffee hosts serve once every four months. The more people signed up, the less often one has to do it. I have the coffee ready for Sunday mornings and the host plates the refreshments as needed, puts coffee in servers, pours orange juice in pitchers and cleans up. The office sends out quarterly schedules; the Faithful Servants are listed in the Messenger each month; and a reminder is sent during the week scheduled. If for any reason you can’t fulfill your scheduled time, please try to find someone to trade with or take your place, then notify the office by Thursday morning so the bulletin can reflect any changes.

We always need people to help at the Welcome Center and help people find sign-up sheets, greet people, and be a smiling face for the church. Kids Against Hunger has changed their name to Jasper County Take Away Hunger. Their next event will be Saturday, March 25th, at Lynnville Friends Church. The sign-up sheet will be available later in February. There is a charge of $30 per person to help buy the food for packing. Please see me if the money is a problem. If you can’t fulfill your time, please try to find someone to replace you. The pictorial directories have arrived. I hope you have picked yours up. If not, see me on Sunday mornings or come to the church during office hours. Everyone who had their picture taken will receive a free directory. As some of you know, I have a brother Dan who lives in the Sierra mountains of California. A message I got from him on January 10th states, “Friday and Saturday we had 26” of snow...then Sunday we had 8.5” of rain...then last night we got 14” of snow and it’s still snowing.” Someone stated the other day that they saw a robin. Have you seen one yet? We have been lucky on our weather, but looking forward to March 20th and the first day of spring!

~ Pat Drew,

Coordinator of Lay Ministries

I Spy with My Two Little Eyes…I Spy with My Two Little Eyes…I Spy with My Two Little Eyes…I Spy with My Two Little Eyes… Have you played “I Spy” with your children or grandchildren? It goes like this: “I spy with my two little eyes…” followed by the color or some other hint. Playing this game makes people more observant when traveling in the car or sitting around.

I spy with my two little eyes that the trees have been cut down in our north parking lot. The city cut the trees down because they had the emerald ash borer disease. At a later date, they will plant a variety of new trees. I spy with my two little eyes that our dining room carpet has been cleaned. Thank you to George Montgomery for donating his time and talent in cleaning our carpets. I spy with my two little eyes that the toilet in our men’s restroom has been removed. Thank you to Rod Wright for making necessary repairs.

Do You Hear What I Hear…?

Not only do we see with our eyes, but we also hear with our ears. Do you hear what I hear?

Beautiful music is shared from our Chancel Choir, our Jubilee Ringers bell choir, our praise band, and special music and solos from gifted singers. Pastor’s headset is working and not popping!

The sound of children and youth laughing and having fun on Wednesday nights, Sunday mornings, and Sunday nights as Christine Dawson, Deb Van Sickle, Shawna Forst, Jeanna Barcus, and Pastor Gary meets with them!

The Nose Knows…

Finally let us not forget our little nose for it knows when something good or bad is taking place.

The nose knows that delicious meals are being prepared and served on Wednesday evenings at our church. Thank you to all who have made our community meals possible. If you would like to help, give Mel Wilson a call or come and check it out on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM. The nose knows that there was a musty smell in the church on Christmas Eve and at other times. Our Facilities and Properties Team is working to solve the problem as it is coming from the fellowship hall area around the stage.

CAN SERVE US WELL!

~ Pastor Gary

Take CareTake CareTake CareTake Care In Jimmy Fallon’s first monologue as host of NBC’s The Tonight Show, he expressed thanks to all past hosts. On an occasion when he might have said, “And now this stage is mine!” or “I’m delighted to be counted among such greats,” instead he stated with deep humility, “I just want to do the best I can and take care of this show for a while.” Take care of. That’s language not of ownership but of stewardship. That’s the language of Genesis 2:15 (NIV) — “The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” What have we been called to “take care of for a little while”? The earth, surely. Perhaps a congregation, a business, a neighbor in need, a volunteer or an employee. A child, who may need less care — or different forms of it — as time goes on. We don’t own these people and things. God invites us to be stewards of them, to care for them, to use wisely and value these precious gifts … and someday, to pass them on to others.

Just a reminder that all children are invited to meet for Kids’ Corner in the Faith Café on Sundays after the children's

message during the 8:45 AM church service. They will get a "sneak peek" into the Deep Blue curriculum we study with our 2 year old - 4th grade students on Wednesday nights! A snack and refreshment are provided.

KIDS CLUB—WEDNESDAY EVENINGS

Children 2 years old - 4th grade meet on Wednesday nights from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM for Kids Club. We have a meal together, a lesson, and a special activity such as crafts, games, or music. High school youth serve as teacher assistants. The kids LOVE to see our helpers! We have so much fun and could not do it without them. In February, our units will be about the Parables.

Pastor Gary and Deb Van Sickle host a Jr. High Youth Group for 5th - 8th grade students on Wednesday nights from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. We are so thankful for their leadership! After a meal, the group meets for a Bible study called re:form "Ancestors" which includes a DVD video and lively discussion.

YOUTH DOWNTOWN—SUNDAY EVENINGS

Youth Downtown is mostly attended by Sr. High Youth in 9th - 12th grades, who meet on Sunday nights from 6 PM to 8 PM in the youth parlor. The group is studying material from re:form "Anti-Workbook" and other relevant life topics. On January 22nd the group met at Cardinal Lanes to help sell thin blue lines to support area law enforcement. Thank you to Brian and Lisa McKinney for also inviting the youth to bowl! We are planning a LOCK-IN at the church on Sunday, February 26th. The group is considering attending Faith and Family Night on March 5th (Iowa Energy basketball game followed by a concert), and we plan to go on a mission trip March 17th-20th in Minnesota. Thank you for your continued support of our children's and youth ministries! Pastor Gary, Christine Dawson,

Shawna Forst, and Deb Van Sickle
