hearts be troubled.” John 14:27

Hospitalizations Released: Grace Dickey, Betty Schafer

Home Mission Sunday Home Mission Sunday will be June 3rd. The Salvation Army asks you to consider monthly donations of spaghetti sauce, canned tuna, Tuna Helper, and macaroni & cheese. These items are always in great need. Please put the items in the wicker baskets at the church entrances. Thank you for your ongoing generosity!

MUG Mob Come and join us for a cup o’ fun at MUG Mob on Monday, June 4th, at 10 AM. Men and women of all ages are welcome to gather for a time of coffee, snacks and fellowship.

Community Meals Special thanks to First Lutheran Church, Congregational UCC, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and FUMC volunteers who helped with this season’s Wednesday night community meals. The churches will suspend this ministry until the fall. Watch future Messengers and bulletins for start-up details.

June Mission Opportunities The Mission Market Table is now open in the narthex. Please

check out the baked goods being brought in. Some garden goodies have appeared. There is also a sign-up sheet if you are interested in helping with the table before and right after church. With this ministry we help people bag their items and help keep the table looking

nice. There are many ways to volunteer at FUMC and they are all important to fulfill our “Reaching In, Reaching Up, and Reaching Out” mission statement.

Peace with Justice Sunday is a special collection to fund programs that advocate for peace and justice in the United States and around the world. Special offering envelopes will be in the bulletins on Sunday, June 3rd. Your generous giving is greatly appreciated.

50-Year Member Recognition On Sunday, April 29th, Joan Frohardt and Karen Kriz received certificates in recognition of their 50-year church membership. Congratulations!

Senior Council The Senior Council will not meet in June. 2

Iowa Annual Conference The 175th session of the Iowa Annual Conference will gather June 8th-11th in Des Moines. Those attending from FUMC include Pastor Gary, Shawna

Forst, and Pam Ratliff. Worship services on Sunday, June

Annual Conference June 8-11

Annual Conference June 8-11

Pat’s Path Wow! May was certainly a busy month at FUMC. Did you get your garden planted? I am always excited to see the first plants pop out of the ground. Everything is coming to life. Trees are

budding, and new leaves are popping out. Flowers are blooming. Everything is so colorful. Can you imagine what colors we will see in heaven? The Free Treasures Giveaway was a big success again. The Salvation Army came and picked up everything that was left. A big thank you to everyone who helped with this event. The fall Free Treasures Giveaway is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th. Please mark your calendars! We will be serving at Trinity on Friday, June 29th. We will need donations of food, people to help cook, a driver for the van, and people to go and help serve the meal. If this is something you have never helped with before, please consider this ministry. It is very rewarding to help feed God’s sheep. See the Welcome Center for the sign-up sheets for this event. A volunteer list for the RAGBRAI event is available at the Welcome Center. We are asking for your help by donating one hour on Wednesday, July 25th, to help provide a meal to the cyclists and crews. There are many different jobs, so please look at the positions available and help. It will be very important for you to please plan on reporting to your stations about 5 minutes before your shifts. This will give you a chance to see how the job is done and get any last-minute instructions. If you will be baking and providing a pie or two for this event, please see the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Dave and I have taken the last week of May off for vacation. We will be back the first Monday in June. Our daughter and her husband are traveling with us to Kimberling City, Missouri, to see my brother. Of course, we will be traveling around Branson and enjoying some sightseeing. This will definitely be a time to refresh the soul.

Remember, June 17th is Father’s Day. Make some good memories with your fathers this year. Someday memories will be all that we have. Senior Council has a nice gift planned for all fathers that day. I look forward to seeing you when we get back. Let’s all have a great and safe summer. Pat Drew, Coordinator of Lay Ministries

I Spy with My Two Little Eyes… Special thanks to Bill Yeager and Tom

Hollander for meeting several times over the furnace and air conditioning concerns. Their availability to tend to this is greatly appreciated!

Thank you, Greg Loder, for making arrangements for hard-to-reach windows to be

cleaned!

A note of thanks to Jerry Yates for moving the railing in the basement leading to the adult classroom!

Have you noticed the south flowerbed where the sign sits under the chapel windows? Thanks to a gift in memory of Joan Lane, Bob Lane has worked with landscapers to remove old shrubs and replace the area with new plantings. Beautiful!

Furnace and Air Conditioning Report The Facilities & Property Committee has developed a long-

range plan to replace the furnaces in the church that were installed about 32 years ago. There were 13 furnaces installed in 1986. The manufacturer of the furnaces no longer has parts available for repairs. Three furnaces were replaced in the fall of 2017 and two furnaces and air conditioning units were replaced in March 2018. The long-range plan is to replace 2-3 furnaces per year

until they have all been replaced and companion air conditioning units, as needed. The estimated cost for this project is $55,000. The Generosity & Stewardship Committee considered this to be a major maintenance project and could not be funded out of the Facilities & Property Committee’s annual maintenance budget. The Generosity & Stewardship Committee has received approval from the Administrative Council to have a capital campaign to raise the necessary funds to complete this project. The congregation is now being asked to provide support and raise the $55,000 needed to complete the project. We all receive the benefits of having a comfortable church to worship in and hold other meetings and church functions. The gifts that are given to support this project are to be a special gift and not a part of your gifts to support the annual budget. Your special gift will enable the Facilities & Property Committee to replace/maintain the HVAC systems. The RAGBRAI Committee has pledged the profits from the Beef & Noodle Dinner served on July 25th to the Furnace Campaign. Your gift to the “Furnace Fund” can be mailed to or dropped off at the church office. All gifts should be designated for the “Furnace Fund.” Stewardship & Generosity Committee

Book Club All are welcome on Thursday, June 28th, at 7 PM when Book Club reviews Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks. At the age of 32, Russell Green has it all: a stunning wife, a lovable six-year-old daughter, a successful career as an advertising executive, and an expansive home in Charlotte. He is living the dream, and his marriage to the bewitching Vivian is the center of that. But underneath the shiny surface of this perfect existence, fault lines are beginning to appear...and no one is more surprised than Russ when he finds every aspect of the life he took for granted turned upside down.

Church Softball Due to a shortage of churches interested in sponsoring softball teams, the First United Methodist Church softball team will not play this summer. It is hoped the league will generate more interest and be able to resume next season.

Ice Cream Social The annual UMW Ice Cream Social will be held on Sunday,

June 24th, at 5 PM in the church dining room. In addition to delicious ice cream, hot dogs with all the fixings will also be served. Several flavors of ice cream will be available, along with a variety of toppings and an assortment of cookies and small cakes. Coffee, iced tea, lemonade, and iced water will be available. Please bring your family, friends, and neighbors for an evening of awesome

Christian fellowship. Everyone is welcome. This event is UMW’s gift to FUMC in gratitude for its support and cooperation during the past year. The FUMC United Methodist Women look forward to seeing you at the social.

UMW News All UMW meetings will take a break over the months of June, July, and August. Please mark your calendars for the next meeting on Wednesday, September 5th.

New Stephen Ministers Are Commissioned

Adopt a Room This June Throughout the month of June, we are inviting families and individuals to adopt a room within the church that they could clean. Following a busy year of activities and ministries, some deep cleaning is in need beyond the normal cleaning and upkeep throughout the year. To pick one particular day for a church-wide cleaning event is difficult to do with people headed in many different directions. As a result, you can come when your calendar is free. Each room will be marked with a list of things to do and when you are done just take the sign down and write your name and we will know the work was done. Inside the church we have a total of 6 bathrooms, 10 classrooms of various sizes, large and small storage rooms, the sanctuary, fellowship hall, and dining room as well as much more that needs some love and care. All the supplies needed will be provided and you will find them at stations on each floor of the church. If you or your family would like to work on a weeknight, just check with the office to receive a key and then return it the next day after the work is done. You can make this a fun time by inviting ministry teams in our church to work together on a particular day in June. Many hands not only make work a little easier, but the fellowship and laughter makes the day much brighter. Once again, each room or area will be well marked and if you would like to work outdoors on the church lawn and around our building, a list of things to do will be posted on the furnace room door in the basement. If you have any questions, please call the church office and we will do our best to answer them.

RAGBRAI Our church will host a beef and noodle meal for RAGBRAI riders and community members on Wednesday, July 25th,

from 4:30 PM to 7:30 PM in the dining room. We plan to serve 1,000 meals; the cost will be $8.00 per person. Income from the meals will be used first to repay meal expenses; the remainder will be given to the church Finance Committee to be used to help pay for furnace/air conditioning unit replacements. The church RAGBRAI Committee estimates this endeavor will need

meal preparation volunteers as well as 45 server volunteers for each of three one-hour shifts on July 25th. Volunteer sign-up sheets are available in the church Welcome Center. The committee will also ask for the donation of homemade pies.

Way to Go! Congratulations to Luke Guy who recently graduated from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte with degrees in International Studies and French. We wish you all the best going

forward!

Under the direction of Pastor Gary Marzolf and Nina

Robson, FUMC commissioned newly trained Stephen Ministers on Sunday, May 6th. Blessings to Pat Drew and Sandy Davis who completed substantial training to equip them for their tasks. Let us thank God for all that they will bring to our congregation in providing care to others, and let us promise them our daily prayer and support as we send them out to minister among us.

We look forward to keeping in touch with Alex and Jacob as they embrace new adventures post-high school, with Christ as their rock! As we shared with Pastor Gary in the graduation litany: “God, we release these, your servants, into the world. We ask that you intentionally help them find their calling and

become the servants you intended them to be."
