1 The Mallard Issue 299 August 2016 A Celebration to Remember Great Massingham Parish Council had the lovely idea, as part of the Queen’s 90 th birthday celebrations, to present a commemorative coin to all children who attend the village school or pre-school. The presentation for the Primary School children took place in St Mary’s Church as part of the leavers’ service on 30 th June. Parish Councillors Andrew Bick- erton and Karen Wadham presented the coins. The children were delighted to have something of their own as a keep- sake to mark this very special occasion. Thank you Parish Council Another celebration, on 8 th June, at the time of the Queen’s official birthday, was a ‘Red White and Blue Day’ held at our village Primary School. The children wore red, white and blue for the day and among the various activities were crown making, learning and singing the national anthem and learning to dance the Charleston. Instead of the usual school dinners they had a street party and you can get a glimpse of the atmosphere from the picture above.

A Celebration to

Remember Great Massingham Parish Council had

the lovely idea, as part of the Queen’s

90th birthday celebrations, to present a

commemorative coin to all children who

attend the village school or pre-school.

The presentation for the Primary School

children took place in St Mary’s Church

as part of the leavers’ service on 30th

June. Parish Councillors Andrew Bick-

erton and Karen Wadham presented the

coins. The children were delighted to

have something of their own as a keep-

sake to mark this very special occasion.

Thank you Parish Council

Another celebration, on 8th June, at the time of the Queen’s official birthday, was a

‘Red White and Blue Day’ held at our village Primary School.

The children wore red, white and blue for the day and among the various activities

were crown making, learning and singing the national anthem and learning to dance the

Charleston. Instead of the usual school dinners they had a street party and you can get

a glimpse of the atmosphere from the picture above.

‘Histry Bits’.... TRAIN SPOTTING

My father always took me with him whenever he went to Mass-

ingham Station to send off boxes of day-old turkey chicks to desti-

nations all over England. I nagged him to get there early so I could

stand on the footbridge and watch the distant plume of smoke

from the approaching train get nearer and nearer until it finally

rumbled and thumped to a halt somewhere beneath my feet, puff-

ing out soot-laden smoke that made me cough and my eyes water.

It wasn’t healthy but, to me, it was the best smell ever! While the

turkey boxes were being loaded, the driver and the fireman would

nod to me, and ask how I was doing, before Mr. Bragg the station

master waved his flag and the little train, consisting of no more

than a couple of carriages and a goods van, chuffed away through

the spring sunshine towards Hillington and Lynn. When Dr.

Beeching axed the Lynn & Fakenham line in 1963 and the last

train left, it took a small chunk of my childhood with it.

Many years earlier, another small Massingham boy also enjoyed

his visits to the station. His name was Ernest Johnson and he was

there when it all started. He wrote about it, many years later, in a

series of articles for the Lynn Advertiser: ‘The first section of the

line, from Lynn to Massingham, was completed in 1879. The

Fakenham section followed a year later. Most of us had never seen

a real live railway train. The only thing we had seen resembling a

train was Arthur Chapman’s traction engines which used to come

lumbering through the village from Grimston. Naturally, some

time elapsed between the date the new railway was started and

when, from the top of Little Massingham Hill, we could see large

gangs of men digging away, cutting the line across the fields from

the direction of Harpley Dams. Huge crowds of sightseers came

from all directions to check on its progress. In due course, the line

reached the site of Massingham’s new station. What games we

youngsters used to have and on Sundays too, when we thought the

coast was clear. We would push a navvies’ trolley onto the newly-

laid line and, using the wooden lever device to spin the wheels

round, go for long joyrides backwards and forwards for hours

together. Eventually, the new station

was completed and the line was

opened for traffic. What a day that

was! Those who were fortunate

enough to take their first railway

ride were as proud as dogs with two

tails. Henceforth, the name of Mass-

ingham would be brought out of obscurity to appear in the world-

renowned pages of Bradshaw’s Guide!’ David Miller

8th Annual Village Yard Sale Sunday 21st August from 9am-1pm

Last year was a great success with over 40

households taking part. It will again be the

weekend before the bank holiday which,

we hope, will mean fewer people from the

village will be away on holiday.

As with all previous years, the event will

be publicised in a wide variety of local

and regional papers plus radio. The pitch price remains at £5.

All we raise goes towards church funds. If

you are a tax payer, you can gift aid your £5

fee to ensure the church receives an extra

£1.25. Envelopes will be available from the

church or direct from me. They just need

your name, address and signature.

BINGO FUNDRAISER THANKS Many thanks to everyone who helped the

Youth Club at the Bingo fundraiser in June.

We all had a good time and it was well sup-

ported by both young people and their fami-

lies as well as regular Friday Bingo goers.

Liz, our treasurer, has banked £310. Wow !

Huge thanks to Suzie Overson & her family

for helping us in running this event. Without

them we would have been lost. Thank you.

Gert & Daisy.... ....

Well we’re back. Blast we had a lovely holiday. We met some lovely people in far away

Menorca. There was Rachel from Cawston, George from Dereham and Len from West

Winch. It’s great to meet people from all over the world. At least we could understand

what they were saying. Bert burnt his legs on the first day but you with facebook will

know this and Sid kept going off with some pretty Russian woman on long walks, or so

he told us. As Daisy & Sid travelled by land (which they won’t do agin) they got back

Monday at midnight, 48hrs after Gert & Bert, but did have a look round Barcelona.

Yet again we have lost one of our special people in this village. Dear Amy Cross was the

kindest, gentlest lady you could ever hope to meet. She was a loyal member of the

Coronation Club for many years and was always the first to stand and thank people. She

will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers go to Vic and all his family.

Wasn’t the church fete well attended. Bet they made loads a money. Well done every

one who worked so hard, especially Anna. We were on the raffle tickets with Betty

from Little Massingham and think we sold about 1500 tickets which all had names and

phone numbers wrote on the back. Poor old Daisy has got writers cramp hence Gert has

writ it this month but her spelling int as good.

Well we could go on for ages about the holiday but we don’t want to bore you. We have

a few pictures if anyone is interested but they don’t come cheap. You all take care of

yourselves and hopefully we’ll have more next month. Gert & Daisy x x

Thought of the month;

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and laxative on the same night.

OPEN GARDENS REPORT –19th JUNE

The Open Gardens event held, on the 19th June, raised £190 for Church funds.

Below is Liz foster’s report in poetry form.

Thank you to all who opened their gardens and thank you to

Liz Foster and Tina Andrew for organising the event. See you all next year!

The week before our Open Day

The weather was appalling.

We watched the sky and blackened clouds

And still the rains kept falling.

The rain came down, the weeds came up

The grass in need of mowing.

We thought on Open Gardens

That no one would be going.

The Sunday dawned all bright and clear

We thought our luck was changing.

We cut the grass and pulled the weeds

And did some re-arranging.

And lots of jolly, happy folk

Came smiling to The Well.

Eleven gardens to be seen

And lovely plants to sell.

With tractor rally, plants for sale

The day was entertaining.

We hope you’ll join the fun again

Next year, if it’s not raining!

allowed us to leave collecting bottles

on their counters, for your use.

Should anyone else like a bottle at home please

nah at the Dabbling Duck. This project will only

run until the start of the new school year in Sep-

tember. Please give as much as you can spare and

remember all money raised is for our school and

pupils.

Wimbledon Tennis Enjoyed on the Village Hall ‘Big Screen’ On the day of the Wimbledon Men's Final, fifty-two members and friends sat down to a

wonderful two course meal in

the Village Hall while Andy

Murray battled his way to win

the Championship. It was a

great party, helped by Andy's

convincing win.

Thanks to Bruce Riches, who

sorted out the aerial and con-

nected it to the new sound

system, we were able to

watch the match on the big

screen. Chefs Irene Allen,

Ali Ward and Sandy Francis

provided the food with Annie

and Peter Lawton and Ali

decorating the hall. Keith Bowes asked at the end, "Can I book for next year?" The answer

is - yes. The hall's already booked!

Any big event or match that's available on a Freeview channel (e.g. BBC, ITV etc)

can easily be shown on the big screen. Why not book it?

Strollers..... Along the Nar Valley Way Again Sunday 17th July saw eight Strollers assemble at

the Well. Five were driven to the West Lexham

turn to walk to Castle Acre via Newton and three

of us joined them later to walk from Castle Acre

to West Acre. Here we were met by four non

walkers to lunch at the Stag Inn.

The weather was ideal for a Sunday stroll with

sunshine all the way and a cooling breeze. Our

walk took us along the river side with reed beds

scented by blossoms of Meadowsweet. Butter-

flies, dragonflies and electric blue damselflies

added to our delight along with the tinkling songs

of goldfinches feeding on the

purple thistles. A special de-

light were the marsh orchids

growing beside the path.

With so much to see, our

progress was slow but ‘What

is this life, if full of care, we

have no time to stand and stare’.

After entering the shade of the woods we crossed

the Nar where the ghosting trout were loitering.

Unfortunately, all such delights have to end but

not before enjoying the excellent lunch provided

at The Stag, washed down with a cool pint or two.

Our next stroll is, hopefully, on Sunday

22nd August at 9.30am. Everyone is welcome.

SPEED WATCH NEEDS YOU!

Are you fed up with the speed of

traffic through our village?

Do you wish we could do more

regular speed watch sessions?

Do you want to see the speed

watch team in more areas of the

village?

Do you have a couple of hours free

each week?

Then join the ‘Community Speed

Watch’ teams and make a difference.

Our team has sadly diminished over

time so that we are only able to do

one session a week. Bruce, Mark,

John and Oliver have managed to

keep things going and we have re-

cently been joined by Peter.

With a couple of extra volunteers we

could do more sessions in more

places so, if you would like to help,

contact me on 01485 520307 or call

at 9, Abbey Road.

There will be some formalities to

undergo and some basic training with

me. Once all details are verified you

will be able to join the effort to make

our village a safer place for us all.

See you there.

Go to Town Bus - What has been achieved. Use it Don’t lose it! For the residents of Great Massingham, there are now :

4 services per day to & from King’s Lynn - connecting with Stagecoach X8 at Harpley

A daily service (Monday to Friday) to and from Fakenham and Morrisons

Saturday services between King’s Lynn and Great Massinghaam

Three and a half years ago, there were none of these services.

The launch of the two new services, for which we campaigned for the residents of Mass-

ingham, Harpley, the Kiptons, Helhoughton, West Raynham, Pudding Norton, Docking,

Bircham, Flitcham, Anmer, Monks Close, Hillington and South Wootton, took place on

Saturday July 2nd in Great Massingham.

I would like to thank all who came along to show their support for our campaigning and

thank you also to those who sent us their apologies for not being able to attend the event.

I also need to thank all of the village residents who argued the case of a need for a bus

service for Great Massingham via the petition narratives and signatures which we can-

vassed door-to-door during the winter of 2012 and urge them, as did Carol Bower, Dep-

uty Mayor, and John Dobson, County Councillor to try out and use the new bus services.

They will save you petrol costs, parking costs, wear and tear on your vehicle – and to

quote Carol Bower – ‘wear and tear on yourself’!

There was extensive press coverage of the ‘Go to Town’ bus launch in both the Eastern

Daily Press & Your Local Paper and front page news in the Lynn News of Tues. July 5th.

We are truly grateful to Mark and his team at the Dabbling Duck for not only hosting the

launch but providing free tea and coffee too. John and I can only re-iterate our thanks to

Great Massingham Parish Council for its injection of funds into the bus project and its

support of the project.

I am now ‘logged off’ from the bus project.

If you have any queries about either of the new bus services, please contact Richard

Pengelly at West Norfolk Community Transport on 01553 776971 Yvonne Bridger

Many, many thanks to Yvonne and John Bridger, The Parish Council and everyone else

involved in this worthwhile, successful campaign. Use it or Lose it to ensure our hard

fought for bus service continues and all this work is not in vain.

Monday July 11th, the first day of ‘route 2’ was amazing - 16 passengers boarded

the bus in Docking alone! It was full by the time it reached Hillington!

It would be fantastic if Massingham could match this level of use and turn-out.

In memory of Mike Green The large number of people in attendance at Mike Green’s funeral, at St Mary’s Great

Massingham on 24th June, was a clear indication of the fondness felt for this well-known

village personality who had celebrated his 80th birthday on

2nd February this year.

The service was led by Reverend Judith Pollard with Valerie

Brown, Mike’s sister, also giving a moving tribute to her

brother. What came across clearly from what both of them said

was that Mike was a very interesting, big-hearted, talented man

who lived life to the full and was very active until the end. He

was a keen sportsman and talented musician. (see picture right)

The completion of his National Service in 1954/6 had a lasting

influence on Mike’s life. He attended regular reunions and was

an active member of the British Legion. One of the things he

did in association with this was to tend the war graves in Great

and Little Massingham for many years.

Mike was a real lover of music, especially brass band music,

and played in the village band as a young man and the Royal

Norfolk Regimental Band after his national service. He could,

apparently, get a sound out of anything!

Mike met his wife Margaret at the skating rink in King’s Lynn and earlier this year they

celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. They have two sons - Tony and Terry.

Mike, known to many as ‘Greeno’, was full of fun and loved the country way of life.

More specifically, he loved Great Massingham and had a wealth of knowledge of the

history of the area and the people. He always had time for others being always willing to

help in any way he could be it with gardening, transport or just being a good neighbour.

The loss of Mike leaves our village community the poorer in so many ways.

We have lost one of our special characters.

Acknowledgment - With Thanks

Isobel, Paul and Richard Tilbury wish to thank

everyone who shared their memories of Mike,

whether in writing, at the funeral or informally.

You have helped us in our grief.

Thank you also to Emma Duggan, Fakenham &

District Funeral Services and to Weasenham Pub

and Vic and staff at Great Massingham Club for

the catering.

The collection at the funeral service amounted to

£773.55. Ten additional donations brought the

total to £977.55. This has been shared equally

between Great Massingham Surgery and the

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Medical Assessment Unit

in memory of the excellent care Mike received.

Biodiversity Project News Our Open Garden on Sunday 19th June, part of the Village

Open Gardens Event, was very well-attended. Dozens of plants

were sold at bargain prices and much strawberry cream cake

and tea consumed on a thankfully sunny afternoon. Donations

and sales totalled a magnificent £265. A big thank you to those

who came to see the garden, donated so generously and bought

plants and/or second hand books. The money will be spent on

seeds, plants, bird food etc. for the Biodiversity Project.

There will be a working party at the biodiversity site on

Weasenham Road on Saturday 20th August, starting at 10 am,

with a break for tea, coffee and biscuits at 11 am. As ever, all

are very welcome to come and help. No special knowledge or

experience are needed. There is a mixture of light and not-so-

light work and we try to make each working party a social occasion.

grammed to be undertaken at

This up-grade has been a long
