Just What The Village Needs

A bout fifty people from the Village and representatives of fourteen village

organisations attended the Consultation on 14th October to view the plans

and proposals for the refurbishment of the Village Hall. Over thirty participants

completed detailed feedback forms most of which were very supportive saying

things like: “Just what the village needs; the work planned looks great.”

Quite a few practical and useful comments were made and the Refurbishment

Committee is working its way through these.

The plans and background information are being put on display at the Hall. Of

course, our ability to make these plans a reality depends on the willingness of funders

to support the project and work will have to be done in stages, the first of which is

shown in the picture above.

Many thanks to those came along. If you were unable to come but would like to

contribute in any way, please speak to Arthur Allen on 520 628. Robin Arbenz

‘Mr Holmes’ Long-retired and near the end

of his life, Sherlock Holmes

(Ian McKellen) grapples with

an unreliable memory and must

rely on his housekeeper's son

as he revisits the still-unsolved

case that led to his retirement.

‘Histry Bits’...... HOME TRUTHS

On the 23rd of February 1820 the Reverend Charles David

Brereton was appointed rector of Little Massingham. He was

deeply interested in alleviating the grinding poverty of agricul-

tural workers, and he published several books on the subject.

Conditions were bad in Little Massingham but, at least, the

population seemed to be honest. In Great Massingham, things

were very different. Here’s what the good Reverend wrote

about our beautiful village:

“In the neighbouring parish (of

Great Massingham) there have been,

during the year, cases of burglary,

issuing of base coin, sheep, pig, corn

and fowl stealing, besides poaching

and other offences. The house of

one of the labourers was searched,

and in it were found base coin, silver

and gold, corn, and other articles,

the apparatus of house-breaking,

vice, files, dark lantern, and fifty

picklock keys, which open almost

all the locks in the two parishes. It is

known that fifteen or more of the

labourers have been at this man’s

house at a time, and all night gaming.

Three persons have been transported from the same village

during the past year, and many others imprisoned. The testimony

of the farmers and constables goes to shew that the great body

of the labourers have been more or less connected with the

notorious offenders”. No change there, then! David Miller

Parish Council Report - October Meeting Seven councillors attended the meeting on 19th

October. Also present was the Clerk, Mr. Tilbury

(Borough Councillor) and four parishioners.

The new Transparency Code for smaller

Councils was discussed. This will produce

extra work for Parish Councils but, unfortu-

nately, a number of the instructions are un-

clear. Clarification is to be sought from the

Department for Communities and Local

Government.

Concern was expressed at the possibility of

Norfolk County Council closing the village’s

Fire Station. This is an essential facility for

our isolated location and appropriate letters

are to be sent to Norfolk County Council

and the Chief Fire Officer.

The Village Link Action Group continues

with its work to provide additional local bus

services. The members voted to support, in

principle, this worthy project and all parishes

involved along the routes will be requested

to pledge financial assistance within the

next two months.

The members agreed to support projects

involving the Play Park and the Bowls

Club. Details will be confirmed when ex-

act figures regarding costings and grants

available are known.

A ‘Celebration Tea Time’ event is to be

held on 11th November for all parishioners

born before 1st September 1939.

Various items of correspondence and all

outstanding accounts were processed.

Next meeting

16th November at 7.30 pm, Village Hall.

Gert & Daisy....... Well, here we are agin folks. We nearly missed it this month cos we

hev hed so much ter dew. Winter drawers on now – that int harf chilly.

Gert hev bin a bit dicky. She hed her flu and newmoania jab last Sataday and by Sundy

she thort she wus gorna die. Where on earth do snot come from? We hope yew are awl

feeling OK and managed ter servive the flu job.

We are both gunna star in another Murder Mystery up the hall this month. We are quoit

excited abowt it as there hev ben a few now and Mr Prickerton has never bin the victim

so hopefully that moight be him this toime. In eny case we congratulate him on becoming

a granddad – his boy Matthew hev got a little gal Phoebe.

On a very sad note we would like to send our sympathy to the family of Donny Darlow

who sadly passed away in October. He was such a lovely man and always ready to have

a laugh with you. He was the local bingo caller for many years. Our thoughts are with

his wife Sylvia and family at this very sad time. Also we hev heard that Joy Back has

passed away. She and Derek worked hard for the Church and we learnt to play the hand-

bells at hers and had many an enjoyable evening there. Condolences to all her family.

Daisy went and watched the Bike Race thother Sundy. Them boikes don’t harf go farst!

That pittled down so Daisy and Sid went hum fer a cuppa half way thru but see the larst

lap. Les hope they dew it agin next year.

We hope yew awl tek care on Firework Night and remember ter keep your dogs and cats

in – only sausages and burgers on the barbecues please!

The first Craft and Chat went very well up the hall. There wus16 ladies come and dun

their luvly crafts. There wus cardmaking and quilting ter patchwork and crochet. Daisy

dun sum embroidry and Gert darned Sid’s socks. That were a really luvly afternoon.

We would loike ter thank Mr Brun fer his comment on Gert and Daisy meaning ‘crazy’

in Cockney rhyming slang. We dun sum investigation on tinternet and officially ‘Olaf’

means ‘relic’ in Scandinavian (furriner). If yew look in the Urban Dictionary yew ken

find a more interesting meaning! The most modern Olaf we know is a small snowman

from the film Frozen – he is a bit dense and leaves small puddles on the floor.

Thanks ter Bev fer checking owt the bells – glad someone reads our little ramblings!

As we write this, Daisy is waiting fer a call from her boy ter let her know the latest

grandchild hev arrived safely but six weeks early. They hev bin in Stevenage hospital fer

just over three weeks keeping an eye on mum and baby. Thanks ter the hospital staff and

fingers crossed awl turns owt well.

Guess yew’ll awl be gitting yer Christmas shopping dun soon. We’ll dewing our lists soon.

We are now gitting ready fer the Celebration Tea Time – thanks ter awl the ladies who

hev offered ter help and mek cakes and Peggy fer sausage rolls (hope there’s a cupple fer

us, too!). Dew yew keep atroshing. Gert and Daisy

Our Coffee Evening For those who might not be aware, we are

trying to raise funds for a defibrillator for

the village. At present £600 has been

raised but £2,000 is needed to purchase

this piece of equipment.

A coffee evening is being held in the vil-

lage hall on Wednesday 18th November

so why not come along for a coffee and

valuable cause at the same time?

The Borough

Council Backs

‘Community Cars’

Once Again

The Scheme continues to receive increas-

ing numbers of requests for trips for hospi-

tal and doctors’ appointments, essential

shopping etc. Underpinning the growing

service is modest but essential financial

help from local authorities such as our Bor-

ough Council. We are pleased that, despite

cuts to its overall spending, the Council has

accepted our case for a further year’s sup-

port. Recognition of the importance of our

work was summed up in this comment from

the Council: “It’s meant with all honesty

when I say your service is very much appre-

ciated in West Norfolk. We hear numerous

stories of rural isolation and loneliness

being a bigger risk to health than smoking or

obesity so the work you do in making sure

this risk is reduced is invaluable......”

To continue to measure up to this high

regard we badly need additional drivers to meet the growing demand and replace

those who have recently retired. There is no

set time commitment, drivers are paid 40

pence a mile (approx) and are always free

to decline invitations to take trips. Just one

trip a fortnight would be a great help.

Thank You Great Massingham The Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee

Morning fundraising event has now raised

over £138 million since the very first official

coffee morning in 1991 which saw 2,600

supporters raise £208,000. In 2014 over

200,000 registered hosts raised an incredible

£25 million!

As the new fundraising manager for Macmil-

lan in the area I was delighted to attend the

coffee morning held in Great Massingham

village hall, organised by Chrissie Warnes

and her team of fantastic volunteers. I can’t

thank everyone involved enough, for the tre-

mendous support the event received raising

an absolutely incredible £7622!

At Macmillan we offer financial, practical,

medical and emotional support to anyone

affected by cancer throughout their cancer

journey and beyond but right now we can’t

reach everyone who needs us. With over

98% of our income received via voluntary

donations, here are some examples of how

the money you have raised will help more

people affected by cancer get the support

they need to take back control of their lives.

£27 Could pay for a Macmillan Nurse for

£180 Could pay for a Macmillan Grant that

helps a person living with cancer heat

their home when they really need to. £1604 Could operate our Macmillan Support

line for an hour.

£2,871 Could pay for 5,520 copies of The

Cancer Guide.

Every day in Norfolk 15 people will hear the

devastating news they have cancer and in the

UK 2.5 million people are living with and

Mallard News

Massingham Bowls Club Report 2015 2015 was another reasonably successful season for Massingham Bowls Club. We continue to

achieve good results compared to some of our close rivals who have better resources.

The achievements this season were as follows:

The Silver Jubilee team led by Colin Whitmore maintained their status in a very com-

petitive first division having been promoted last year.

Having won the competition last year the Silver Jubilee team again got to the final of

the Subsidiary Cup competition but came runners-up in a very close game decided on

the last end.

The Albert Victor A team led by Malcolm Hipkin, having won the League last year,

were runners-up this year.

The Albert Victor A team also won the League Cup for the third successive year.

The Albert Victor B team led by Martin Matthews were only able to maintain their

position in the third division.

We continue to carry out our own maintenance to the green which this year will require

another major overhaul. The overall appearance of the green has been greatly enhanced

by the renovation and re-planting of the flower beds, which has been mainly carried out

by Bob Nash (aka Sid).

As everyone is aware, the Village Hall Trustees are planning major redevelopment of the

premises and these will have a direct impact on the bowling green necessitating the re

moval of the current bowls hut and the removal of the remaining wall along the hall-side

of the green. To facilitate these planned changes the bowls club are currently working on

erecting a new pavilion and store on the south side of the green. We are envisaging this

project will be financed by grant monies in addition to funds from both the Village Hall

and the Bowls Club.

Massingham again hosted the ‘Albert Victor League Presentation Night’ in the Village

Hall on 10th October bringing welcome revenue to the hall and club. Malcolm Hipkin

and Peter Wadham intend to continue as joint League Secretaries to the Albert Victor

League next season, if re-elected.

We welcome new members to Massingham Bowls Club next season as it is becoming

ever more difficult to compete in the league and cup competitions with such a small

squad. Anyone, beginners included, interested in joining next season please contact

Peter Wadham (520796), Martin Matthews (520707),

Colin Whitmore (520609) or Malcolm Hipkin (520393).

The winter indoor short-mat bowls sessions on Wednesday evenings will this year be run

by John Setford and will start again in mid-October. This ‘competition’ is open to all and

we welcome new players. If you wish to join in you do not need any equipment or previ

ous experience as bowls will be provided and instruction is available, if required. The

informal daytime sessions on Monday afternoons are also continuing. These are an ideal

introduction to the game. If you would like to play, just turn up and play.

Massingham Bowls Club are pleased to represent the village in the various leagues and

are grateful for the ongoing support from the Massingham Village Hall and the Social

Club. We look forward to another successful season next year.

Message to all Parishioners

I recently accompanied two of our schools – Harpley and Great Mass-

ingham - on a visit to Norwich Cathedral where, with other Norfolk pri-

mary schools, they explored the question: “Who is Jesus?” The children – and

teachers! - were given many opportunities all around the cathedral to explore

in small groups different aspects of Jesus’ life and work. They took with them beautiful

crosses they had made with the schools’ prayers on them which were used in a service at

the end of the day. I was privileged to be alongside our schools. The children behaved

impeccably and really engaged with different learning opportunities on offer, which

ranged from music and movement, writing a praise song, acting and thinking about dif-

ferent ways to pray and listening to stories from Jesus’ life. Well done to everyone, you

did us all proud!

Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot... Yes, it’s

that Guy Fawkes time of year once more. Don’t forget to keep safe if you are having a

Bonfire Party or going to a fireworks display. Remember the Firework Code. You can’t

be too careful with so many dangers around.

November also brings the season of Remembrance. This year, November 8th will be Re-

membrance Sunday and Armistice Day falls the following Wednesday (11th). It is pro-

foundly important to have this annual opportunity to remember with deep gratitude the

ultimate sacrifice made by members of our Armed Forces (and also civilians) both in

previous wars and those who tragically continue to lose their lives to this day, in theatres

of war throughout the world, for the freedoms we hold so dear.

Let us also remember the work of the Royal British Legion, and other military charities,

providing lifelong support for the Armed Forces community. There are many veterans

living with the consequences of life-changing mental or physical injuries, re-building

their lives. You may have seen the recent BBC programme ‘DIY SOS’ from Manches-

ter; it brought home the great need to affirm and empower our veterans and their families

in civilian life after their careers in the Armed Forces have ended.

May God bless us all, Revd Judith.

of Phase 1 should be completed by late July.

In order to help with our application, letters

need to be with us by the end of November.

Play Park Latest

At their meeting on 19th October, Great

Massingham Parish Council voted to support

the proposal for new equipment for the vil-

lage play park.

Phase 1 will include a 4 metre climbing net,

a multi activity climbing frame and a single

point group swing. Phase 2 equipment and

design will be decided at a later date.

The council committed to 50% of the over-

all cost with the remaining 50% hopefully

being funded by a grant from WREN.

The next stage is to complete the application

to WREN by the deadline in January.

WREN’s decision will be made in April

Strollers... Up Hill and Down Dale On Sunday 18th October ten strollers met at

the Well and set off up Drunken Drove to

join Peddars Way. Here we turned left and

followed the path across the B1145 and up the

hill towards Shepherd’s Bush. Pigs were in

abundance in the fields happily rooting,

feeding and wallowing in the mud. We also

wallowed and squelched as we negotiated

the deep tracks left by heavy machinery.

After a bit of a climb, we reached the Castle

Acre Road at the top of the hill. We crossed

the road and walked down the track to Col-

lege Farm. This route afforded us fine views

of Great Massingham and a

plentiful supply of ripe black-

berries (and no, the Devil

hasn’t missed them yet!)

After the farm we made our

way down the hill to Sandy

Lane. Sandy it wasn’t but

muddy and soggy it was!

We arrived back in good time to enjoy a

traditional roast lunch at the Dabbling Duck.

Our next walk will be the last this year and

incorporate our annual Christmas quiz.

The date has yet to be finalised.

Andrew Bickerton

This event took place on the 18th October and, as you can see, many cyclists took

part. The day was cloudy with some rain so not the best conditions both for cyclists

and spectators. Nevertheless, a good number of people from the village came along

to watch and support. Let’s hope our village is chosen again next year.
