note from the turchinsThe summer is winding down to an end and all around are clear signs of a beautiful fall to come. In little pockets throughout the forest, patches of red and orange have begun to burst out against the sea of green. The palette of colorful brilliance that is only weeks away marks the transition to this beloved season in the High Country

and we sure are excited for the change.

With the changing of the leaves comes a series of exciting events and changes up on Eagles Nest. Lined up through October, we have the Labor Day Jeep Excursion, the Fall Feather Festival, and the High Country Land Rush, the details of each can

be found within.

This fall also brings the addition of our new sales and marketing staff. With decades of experience working for huge developments all over the country,

the members of this new team were responsible for selling out luxury communities such as The Ocean Reef Club and The Ginn Hammock Beach Resort. We are very

The Lodges at Eagles Nest hosted Plum TV during their recent stay in the High Country. In town to shoot a segment on Banner Elk

and the surrounding communities, the cable network produces Emmy award winning

programming targeting the affluent resort communities of Martha’s Vineyard,

Nantucket, Hamptons, Miami Beach, Aspen, Telluride, Sun Valley and Vail. The Banner Elk

show is tentatively scheduled to be aired during the upcoming ‘High Season’ at each

of the above-mentioned destinations.

In spite of the weather, the 3rd Annual Rock ‘N’ Road Hill Climb Race was once

again a resounding success. Over 40 sports cars in a dozen categories

competed in what experts considered the best Hill Climb Race Course in the eastern United States. The event produced by the

SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) included a car show in downtown Banner Elk in addition to the two days of races held on Eagles Nest Mountain. Partial

proceeds from the event benefited the Genesis Wildlife Sanctuary.

“Eagles Nest is destined to be one of the great SCCA hill climbs. It’s a true measure

of driver and machine. With its fast sweeping turns, hairpin corners, rock walls

and 100 foot drop-offs, it’s you-know-what at 6,000 feet’, said Garry Hill, a member of

Team Bull Durham.

Drivers participating in this year’s eventincluded John Finger who holds numerous

King of the Hill wins at Chimney Rock, SCCA Pro-Series driver, SPEED World

Challenge pro driver with several wins in the Rolex 24 hrs at Daytona and current

Rock ‘N’ Road King of the Hill.

Allyson Lynn-Davies of Palm Beach, a first time spectator at the race said ‘It reminds

me of Monte Carlo with the gorgeous mountains views and all of the excitement’.

She added, ‘ I am making a point of returning next year’.

stark Art Glass set to open At eagles nest

Glass artist, Sam Stark will be relocating his studio from Asheville to Eagles Nest

during the current season. Stark describes glassblowers as "the bullfighters of the art world. Each day is a contest between man

and fire."

After studying with the Masters of the art including Anderson, Tagliapietra, Chihuly,

Rosin, Lynngaurd and Munch, Stark’s well-regarded career has included public

commissions for the Asheville Film Festival, 21 Battery Park Place also in Asheville, the Commerce Union Bank in Nashville, TN, the

International Ski Film Festival in Crested Butte, Colorado and the Michelin Tire

Corporation. In addition, dozens of private commissions over the past thirty years have

been created by the artist.

Stark's work is all about fluidity, superb technique and the masterful use of color.

Some of his pieces include metal components and other mixed media. "I have recently developed a new approach for the

creation of colors in my work. Pursuing color theory and the physics of light have inspired

my new glass art pieces that work in harmony with color."


Spearheaded by The Lodges at Eagles Nest last year, ‘The Playhouse for Avery County Habitat for Humanity’ is a one-of-a-kind

community led effort to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. The concept behind the

fundraiser follows The Habitat for Humanity ideal in which volunteers build homes for those in need, in this case a

children’s playhouse to be raffled during the famed

Woolly Worm Festival held every October in Banner Elk. Proceeds from the

event will benefit the not-for-profit organization. Last year’s raffle raised

over three thousand dollars. All materials for

the construction of the playhouse are generously donated by local businesses.

This year, the fundraiser is led by Fire Chief Gary Miller of Miller Construction and the

Banner Elk Volunteer Fire Department.On Saturday, October 10th and Sunday,

October 11th, Fire Chief Miller and the All Volunteer Banner Elk Fire Department will take over the parking lot at The Lodges at Eagles Nest offices on Tynecastle Highway

in Banner Elk and build the dream playhouse. The event will also feature fire

trucks and engines on display. Come out and show your support for

both Habitat for Humanity and the Banner

Elk Volunteer Fire Department, as they ‘Raise the Roof’ on

behalf of our community.

We live in Burlington but our hearts (especially Rose’s) belong to the High Country. In our travels we have not been inspired nor awed by any place and its people more than

this part of Western NC. Rose is ALWAYS devising reasons to pull the family back, if

even for a couple of days.

The Steins love the Biltmore and tried to imagine a “small cabin that George and Edith

Vanderbilt would spend days in when they wanted to rough it” when they adorned

their new home on Eagles Nest.

“We are ecstatic to be able to share in the marvelous beauty that is found on EN and find

something new to delight in with each trip.”

Rose Stein’s Mean Dominican Beans:

Ingredients: 1 lb dried red beans

8 cup water

1 large red onion-chopped

3 garlic cloves

1 small green pepper

1 tsp oregano

1/2 TBSP fresh coriander

2 TBSP olive oil

1 cube chicken bouillon

1 tsp vinegar

2 TBSP tomato paste

Directions: Soak the beans in enough

water to cover the beans overnight. Drain

the next morning. In a large pot, bring 8 cups

of water and the beans to a boil. Reduce the

temperature to medium, cover and simmer

until tender. 1 or 2 more cups of water may be

needed. This usually takes 1- 1 1/2 hours. In a

separate skillet, saute the onion, garlic, green

pepper,oregano,coriander,in the olive oil. Add

the bouillon cube, vinegar, tomato paste and

one cup of the bean’s liquid. Simmer for 5- 10

minutes.Add this mixture to the pot of beans.

Mix well and cook uncovered over medium low

heat for about 20 minutes. Serve hot on top

of Nice Dominican Rice.

with dozens of our families participating in it. The Eagles Nest fireworks display later that evening was the perfect ending to our 4th Annual Mountaintop Celebration that

included all day activities, a catered BBQ and a live concert.
