The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing has asoundtrack and it will play live on the beach

before tens of thousands of fans. The event,owned and produced by IMG, the global leader insports and entertainment, is taking a cue from itsaction sports roots, and set to deliver the largest free

concert series of the summer.It doesn't get much better than hearing your

favorite band perform live on the beach.

"It's fun bringing some of the best musicians in theworld to the US Open of Surfing," says Hurley'sDirector of Music and Entertainment Marketing GregTeal. "It doesn't get much better than hearing yourfavorite band perform live on the beach."

This years musical line-up is a representation oftodays youth culture featuring headlining sets by

pysch-pop rockers MGMT, platinum-selling rockersJimmy Eat World and Swedish electro/rocksensations The Sounds. The series will also includesets by the most buzzed about names emerging on themusic scene this year: Surfer Blood and DeadCountry. "We're pretty excited to come to Huntington

Beach for the US Open of Surfing. Our advice to

everyone: Drop out with MGMT, drop by for MGMT, but just don't drop in on MGMT, said MGMT'sAndrew VanWyngarden.

Known as the worlds largest youth culture and actionsports festival, the Nike US Open of Surfing willfeature daily concerts Thursday through Saturday,

August 4-6, at the conclusion of the surfing competi-tion. All concerts are free and open to the public.

The woman who lead the successfulteam effort to bring the migratingMonarch Butterflies back to HB's GibbsButterfly Park is asking for donationsfor an educational tile project thatshows the process they go through fromcaterpillars to winging it.

Leslie Gilson, Volunteer RestorationCoordinator at the park, 16641 Graham St.is spearheading the $17,000 project,called,'Bucks for Butterflies.' We'vealready had commitments for $11,000, soall we need is $6,000 more to make theexciting tile project a reality this Summer."

She said the renown Lubica Seleckawill be doing the artwork, whichincludes eight, 3-foot-by-3-footsections that show all the stages for easyunderstanding.

park, where she'll further explain thetile project and the amazing story ofhow the team of volunteers, the city andothers were able to bring the Monarchs

She's also inviting everyone to thepark, named after former HB Mayor Norma Brandel Gibbs, for MonarchMagic, from 2-4pm, Aug. 7. There willbe a Parade, Puppet Show, Facepainting,Popcorn, a Bugman, Snake Lady andother fun stuff for the whole family.At the park, you also can see anincredible Butterfly Sculpture made ofphotographs and images of HB by localartist Robin Repp.

Repp's silk-screen process broughtout only the darkest and lightestelements of each photo, creating avariety of black images over a blanketof golden paint on the 5-foot acrosssculpture. The artist wanted it to appearas an abstraction of a Monarch, thenwhen you get closer you realize itsimages of HB.

The original creation was for a PublicTV Station butterfly initiative to raisemoney and cover the county withbutterflies. The City of HB supportedthe initiative.

Anniversary Receptionand Open House ofCommunity ServicePrograms' HuntingtonBeach Youth Shelter inCentral Park recentlywhere they saw a largemound of coins that had been collected by businesses, schools, community groups andfamilies to assist the shelter that helps runawaychildren and the homeless.

Organizers hoped more than $10,000 wasraised with the coinage, placed in sheltercontainers the past two months. The welcomecoins will be counted by the Orange CountyCredit Union. "The widespread coin contribu-tion effort allowed people throughout the area to be part of our support activities," said ElsaGreenfield, Shelter Program Director.

She said over 24 groups helped this yearwith the "Change for Change Drive." TheShelter has aided more than 500 boys andgirls (11-17), reuniting 88% of them withtheir families, since it opened.

Huntington Beach Mayor Joe Carchiohonored the following people for their goodwork : HB Police Chief Ken Small (TheDistinguished Partner Award); Cheryl L. Phelps,General Manager of The Hyatt RegencyHuntington Beach Resort & Spa (OutstandingService Award), and The Rapacz Family from

Pacific Contours (Philanthropist Award).

In the crowd at theevent were: HuntingtonBeach City Council-man Devin Dwyer,Huntington Beach FireChief Patrick McIntoshand Huntington BeachMarketing And Visi-tors Bureau PresidentSteve Bone.

Take This Job and Shove It. Many of us have

wistfully thought about telling our boss what Coe

contemplates doing in his 1978 classic

popularized by Johnny Paycheck. But the

lack of gumption and reason prevents

most of us

f r o m

putting our

thoughts into action.

Not Jim Riggleman.

Riggleman was the manger of the

Washington Nationals until he abruptly

quit on June 23 after his team had won

ten of its last eleven games. Perhaps

those lofty accomplishments

emboldened Riggleman to

confront his boss, Nats General

Manager Mike Rizzo, and ask

him to pick up the 2012 option

on his contract. But Rizzo was

having none of it.

To say the move was both surprising and

bizarre is an understatement. Riggleman

has managed four Major League clubs and

has always been referred to as a model

organization man, certainly not the type who

is inclined to rock the boat. Most observers

would have picked him as the last MLB

manager, other than the White Sox Ozzie

Guillen perhaps - to take such drastic action.

On the other hand, Riggleman could see the

handwriting on the wall. Despite his teamssuccess this season, Rigglemans third with the

Nationals, it had become painfully obvious to him that

Rizzo had no intention of handing him the reins of the club

long term. Riggleman was merely keeping the seat

warm for the name manager Rizzo was intent on hiring

after this season.

So Riggleman up and quit one of the most prestigious

jobs in all of sports. There are only 30 MLB managers

and hundreds of men spend a lifetime sacrificing

family, health, pride and dignity in the often futile

pursuit of one of those positions.

While Riggleman obviously disagreed with Rizzos

management approach, resigning essentially quitting on

his team is hardly an appropriate way to demonstrate

that displeasure. If employees resigned every time theydisagreed with their bosses, the current unemployment

rate, already at unacceptably high levels, would

spike considerably.

While Rigglemans actions run counter to his heretofore

reputation as loyal and committed, they likewise speak

volumes about Rizzo and his management style.

Rigglemans resignation will leave a black mark on

Rizzos resume. Bosses should be able to handle employee

disagreements in a manner where they dont spill over into

the public domain. If there were disagreements between

the two men as there undoubtedly are in any GM-

manager relationship they should have either been

resolved privately or at least kept under wraps.

Like the hypothetical person in Coes song, Riggleman

worked long and hard without receiving what he perceived

to be his just reward. But unlike his musical counterpart,

Rigglemans actions were irrevocable.

detectives activelyenforce internetcrimes to protectchildren from sexual

predators. In the fallof 2010, our detectivesdeveloped informationon a subject distribut-ing child pornographyusing file sharingsoftware on theinternet.

On November2, 2010, Huntington Beach Police Departmentdetectives served a search warrant at a residence inHuntington Beach. Detectives obtained evidence ofchild pornography inside the residence. Ourdetectives arrested David Brian White, 52, pursuantto search warrant served at his house. After he wasarrested, David White posted bail and had a future

scheduled court date. A press release was done pur-suant to this arrest and covered by local news media.

The Huntington Beach Police Departmentdetectives submitted this case for review to theOffices of United States Attorney. The case was

presented to a Federal Grand Jury and an arrest war-rant was issued for David Brian White, now 53, forfederal charges of possession of child pornographyand distribution of child pornography. The caseis now being prosecuted as a federal crime insteadof a state crime.

On June 21, 2011, David White was arrested on thisfederal warrant by Huntington Beach detectives at aresidence in Fountain Valley and booked at theHuntington Beach Police Department city jail. DavidWhite was transferred to federal custody today forhis criminal arraignment.

Natalie Kotsch has beenhonored with the title 2011Huntington Beach 4th of

July Community Grand Marshal,said Patricia Stier, Director of the2011 Fourth of July ExecutiveBoard. Natalie will ride in the famed

What makes a Great Wine?

I thought farmraised was the way to go

when buying fish, to avoid mercury contamination. But arethere other concerns about farm raised that make some fish apoor choice for good health? What are the safest fish to buyand which should be avoided? And what about those frozenblocks of fish I get at Trader Joes? Are they safe to eat?

Mercury is a neurotoxin that settles into theocean in large concentrations after we spewit out of industrial smokestacks when

burning fossil fuels like coal and oil. It isthen taken up by smallersea life such as planktonand then spread upthrough the food chainas larger fish eat smaller

ones. We humans theneat the mercury-lacedseafoodwild salmon,tuna, swordfish andother fishand breathe itin our air. Repeatedexposure to mercurypollution can cause brain,kidney and developmentalproblems for people.

Farm-raised fish mayhave somewhat less exposure to mercury than theirwild free-foraging cousins because they are usuallyfed a controlled diet, often consisting of more grainsand soy, a cheaper and more abundant source ofcalories, than fishmeal. But they can still absorb mer-cury, since most fish farms are themselves located inthe ocean, just close to or abutting the shoreline.

Farmed fish can also absorb PCBs and dioxins, as

the near-shore waters they occupy are the first stopfor run-off from land-based sources of pollution. Andthe fact that their primary feed source comes fromconventionally grown terrestrial crops means thattheir diets can include trace amounts of pesticides andherbicides as well. Also, most farmed fish are exposedto dose after dose of antibiotics to keep diseases andpests at bay in their crowded underwater pens, muchin the way factory farmed land animals are druggedto help them cope with cramped, unsanitaryconditions. In fact, studies have shown thatfarm-raised fish have more toxins overall thantheir wild-caught cousins, though exceptions of

course do exist.

The best way to knowwhich fish are safeand which are not isto download a region-specific seafood buying

g u i d e f r o m t h eMonterey BayAquariums SeafoodWatch program. Theseguides aid the deci-sion-making processwhen shopping forseafood in a store orordering it at a restau-rant by dividing the

fish available in that part of the country into threecategories: Best Choices, Good Alternatives and Avoid.

And bring your Seafood Watch guide to TraderJoes as wellat least for now. In 2010, after monthsof lobbying by Greenpeace and a growing number ofconcerned shoppers, Trader Joes agreed to offer onlysustainable seafood in its stores by the end of 2012.To its credit, they already removed endangeredChilean Sea Bass from shelves in 2005, followed by

Orange Roughy in 2009 and Red Snapper in 2010.

In the spirit of its recent pledge, however, TraderJoes is now working with third-party, science-basedorganizations to establish definitions and parametersfor addressing customer concerns about overfishing,destructive catch or production methods, and theimportance of marine reserves. Until 2013 at TraderJoesand indefinitely at other stores that haventmade specific commitments regarding thesustainability of their seafoodmake sure to checkthat labels disclose the type of fish for sale and itssource in regard to wild or farm-raised, and thencheck that info against the Seafood Watch list.

Huntington Beach had 1,933 crimes for thefirst five months this year down from 2,129 for thesame period in 2010.

Crime has decreased in the cityfor this period, except for murder.Huntington Beach has seen twomurders so far in 2011 compared

with none for the same period in 2010,police reported.

Rape is down from 17 cases in2010 to 14 in 2011. Robberydropped from 51 in 2010 to 44in 2011. Burglary decreased

from 331 in 2010 to 296 in2011. Vehicle theft is downfrom 119 in 2010 to 102

in 2011 and larceny is downfrom 1,487 to 1,369 this year,police reported.

Its been a low interest rate environment for acouple years now. As our economy struggles tomake even the slightest improvements, its likely

well remain in a low rate environment for quite awhile longer. While this is good news for those whoare looking to borrow money at record low rates ofinterest, its less optimistic for those who are tryingto save. The interest yields on most savings accountsnow are down to a fraction of one percent. But thereis a creative way to get a fixed two percent yield on aportion of your savings.

Ordinarily, a two percentyield is not much to thinktwice about. However, that ismultiple times more than therates being offered on todayssavings or money marketaccounts. Even certificates ofdeposit (CDs) arent offeringthat high of a yield unlessyoure willing to commit yourfunds for five years or longer.

With the future of our economyremaining uncertain, there isanother way to earn a two per-cent yield without making a fiveyear commitment. Simplyestablish an escrow account on your mortgage.

Escrow accounts, also known as impound accounts,are established by a mortgage lender to ensure yourproperty taxes and homeowners insurance are paidon time. Impound accounts are required on allgovernment loans, primarily FHA and VA loans. Onconventional loans, whether or not to establish animpound account is usually the consumers choice.The only exception comes when the loan amountexceeds 80% of the propertys value. At thishigher debt threshold, most lenders will requirean impound account.

There are restrictions and limitations to how much

a lender can reserve in an escrow account. The federallaw governing this is the Real Estate Settlement andProcedures Act, better known as RESPA. At the statelevel, California is the most advantageous state forconsumers. California law requires that the lender paythe consumer a rate of 2% on the entire balance of anescrow account. Heres that 2% yield.

An average homeowner who pays $4,000 per yearin property taxes and another $1,000 per year

in homeownersinsurance hasroughly $5,000 theycan retain in suchan account. At a 2%yield, thats aneasy $100 per yearin interest theconsumer can earn.Considering thetaxes and insuranceneed to be paidanyways, this is

tantamount to $100of free money.

Someone whosdebating whether

or not to establish an escrow account at the time theyobtain their loan should also know about another piece of California legislation regarding escrowaccounts. In California, it is illegal for lenders tocharge a higher rate or closing costs when a consumerwishes to NOT establish an impound account. Thislaw wasnt written very well though, because lendersare easily able to work around this by offering adiscount on either rate or closing costs for consumerswho DO want to establish an escrow account.Obviously, the letter of the law and the spirit of thelaw are two different things. However, this issomething to keep in mind when considering a newloan. Recognize that certain may offer a slightly better

deal if you establish thisescrow account.

For those who alreadyhave a great loan and arenot looking to changeit, there is still theoption of obtainingthis 2% savings rate.Simply call yourcurrent lenderand inform themthat youd like to create an escrow account for yourcurrent loan. They will need to know how much yourhomeowners insurance is and when the policyrenews. Theyll also need to know how much you payin property taxes. With this information, theyll beable to calculate exactly how much youll be ableto transfer from your current savings account intoa new escrow account.

The best part about this is that theres no penalty forclosing the account later. So, when you need thatmoney for something else, or your finally able to get

a higher yield on another investment vehicle, onemore phone call to your lender should inherit you afull refund of your escrow balance. Just keep in mindthat some lenders require you to have the escrowaccount for a minimum time frame, usuallysix months.
